Your personal fashion rules

No tight clothes for me

No trendy cookie-cutter looks

No hose with open-toed shoes or sandals

No overly-stuffed bras, seriously who are you kidding at the end of the day?

No obvious logos, I tried to do the logo-thing but I can't

Never wear ugly and ill-fitting underwear!

My two rules are to be in style without being trendy, but at the same time be aware of the trends.

I guess I have very few rules (and I like it that way :p --life has far too many rules as it is) ...

I never wear fur or anything else I feel is pretentious, and I don't mix white-white and other shades of white (e.g., cream). Many years ago I had a falling out with my salesperson at the Polo Store over this. She brought me something with this combination and I told her I didn't wear it. She replied, "Oh, but it's very Ralph LauREN!" I replied that it might be, but it wasn't very ME, and she had real issues with that :innocent:

I don't really have rules in the dictionary definition; I let my aesthetic sensibilities define what I wear. Some of my common choices would be..

Minimalism: As an artist I love minimalism (hit http://creativiity.the-enigne.org for some of my artwork). I try to keep my outfits to as few pieces as possible - Solids and lines (pinstriping or stripes) can supplement the definition of my body very well without detracting from it, so I love wearing pinstripes (diagonal and vertical in shirts).

Contrast: Black and white, dark and light. I don't always go this route, but I love contrast.

Rich saturation in colors - When I buy jeans with a "dirty" look, I usually go for the styles that have an almost unrealistic color. I love deep reds and blues in shirts. I can get away with green on occasion, but not all the time.

Snug fits: I like low rise hugging pants that have a boot cut or flare leg, and I want my shirts to supplement my body type, rather than just give me a rectangular look. Women are truely blessed in that they are created with absolutely glorious curves.

Some general things that I do would be..
I don't wear stuff with a fancy brand logo plastered all over.. I'm not rich, and I don't want people to think that I am - I just want to be well dressed.
I try to buy stuff that can work in multiple situations. I sometimes violate this (pleather pants is a good example, or the pink bondage pants I'm going to buy here soon :P), but only on rare occasions.
No shorts - I do NOT have the legs for shorts... Plus, I don't own any good tennis shoes :) I'm boots or flip-flops all the way :P
I don't buy anything that won't work with my new rock boots.
No polo shirts except for when required for a jazz/concert band performance (college) or work. :P I'm not a polo shirt guy.
Cheap is a fashion - black t-shirts with pockets on the front are great (I don't wear em' all the time, maybe once every week or two), so are plain white t-shirts.

Thanks for sharing your site and I love your username -- it's pretty modern itself :)

- White socks do not belong outside a tenniscourt.

- Allways combine something chique with something trashy or you will look too fancy (for example a dirty jeans with cool Bikkembergs boots a fitted white T-shirt and a Dries van Noten coat allways does the trick for me).

- Never wear clothes with the brand or the label written all over it. (I hate it when I see people with "Bikkembergs", "D&G" or "Tommy Hillfiger" written all over them). Good design fashion shows itself through a good concept, a precise cutting and high quality fabrics, not by the name of the designer being smeared all over it.

- A brown belt requires brown shoes, a black belt requires black shoes. If you want to avoid this problem wear white sneakers!

- Never tuck in your shirt, if it is too long to wear loose, just don't buy it!

- Never combine jeans with jeans

- Never dress exactly like on the catwalk pictures. Even if you have the exact same combination of clothes in your wardrobe, don't go for the silhouette created by the designer himself. Eventually someone will notice you look exactly like the picture and think you heve no creativity of your own. Just combine it with other stuff.

-SUNglasses are to be worn when the SUN is actually shining, not in the middle of the winter or the middle of the night (call me old fashioned but it just looks ridiculous)

^ Gotta have to correct you there. White jeans with dark blue denim jacket looks good.

denim (jacket) on denim (jeans)...ugh

Robert Verdi once said that it works if you have 3 denim pieces. I'm not sure if I agree with him, but I love his fun bubbly personality

Here are a few:

Earrings, necklace and brooch: only two out of three at any time

Try to match metals: if I'm wearing a stainless watch, I wear silver earrings and shoes/bag with silver hardware

Black opaque tights rather than sheer black stockings

Black and tan is great. Black and chocolate brown, not so much

Lime green is a neutral. I love it with navy--and orange :ninja:

No blueish pinks or purples! :yuk:

Over-the-top, head-to-toe wild prints are ok if you're in the mood for it...and willing to ignore the stares! Otherwise, only one distinctive, unusual, "statement" piece at a time. Everything else should be understated and clean-lined, otherwise the look gets too jumbled.

Never wear a shirt with a picture of a face on it. It distracts attention from your own face.

Never follow trends unless they flatter your figure.

um... no knit pants,
no white pants,
no optical white at all, prefer ivory or ecru
other than that I'm pretty loose...

but recently I wanted to mix black leather boots with a brown nubuck bag... and hesitated. Is mixing black and brown leather weird? Should I do it?

^I think mixing black and brown is okay if they are different fabrics. Don't know if that helps you though...

Brown and Balck is fine together when dealing with clothing...but I have never seen it done with accessories. I am not so sure that fabric has so much to do with it, as the richness of color. Try it on and look in the mirror...if you like it go for it :)

^ I have def mixed black & brown accessories ... for example, black leather bag with brown croc belt ... let's face the fact that everything but everything goes with brown croc :p

I have broken so many of these rules :ninja:
