I always thought MA is one year...

So true... A student there told me they don't really teach technical aspects, only theories and things of fashion. Students have to learn the technical side on their own
So I guess the kind of student they accept is the kind who already has developed some form of identity and knows what direction they want to take...

But I guess 'identity' and 'concept' is so much better, so much useful. My school is technical and it is a bit sad...

By the way, this someone I am talking about here, just to let you know it is sayan I wasn't sure whether I should say it or not

^^^ I was always under the impression that the BA programs in Europe seem to be shorter than in the US. I thought it was around 3 years, and I figured the MA would be a year.

Yeah, they often have 1 year, which is the Foundations... You take Foundation courses like basic design, drawing, etc.
And in the next year (for 3 years), you choose a specialty.
Being accepted into the specialty program depends on an interview and portfolio...

The art schools in Canada are the same
As for me, I won't go through Foundations since I will be taking 2 years at a technical college first and I'll be able to transfer afterwards to 3rd year in an art school... I wonder though, if I need to be interviewed

im seriously considering FFI for BA, but i think i don't have enough technical skills to back it up.
so, even in FFI BA, they dont teach much technical skills?
because the lack of technical skill teaching in CSM BA is making me think twice about going there after foundation. and i heard from a friend of a friend of mine who is in her last year BA in CSM that the grads dont make their thesis collection themselves, but take it to someone else to make the design. the students only do the design aspect, not the sewing and talioring part.
so because of this, i am thinking whether FFI would be more suited, or not(?)

im looking for a place where i can still learn the triditions and techniques of fashion design and if possible, being able to do things outside of the box.

i know an lcf student who is getting paid to make a csm student's collection.. lol

this school is like my dream. even my course director was saying how this was the best fashion school in the world at the moment... though i guess its kind of obvious.
Apparently how they work is (correct if im wrong),
they take on quite a lot of students for the first year.. 100? cant rememer..
then only like 50 get on to 2nd year,
10 to 3rd
finally, 5 get to do the final year.
I'm not sure of the numbers, so dont trust me on those.
but thats how they work anyway.
I guess its a way of finding the absolute best students.. you cant just tell from the portfolio applications can you? And the tutors can see which students develop... plus, all the money they get from the first, second year goes to supporting the final year students.. its cruel, but apparently not illegal

Thats quite surprising to hear, muxu. seems pointless to have kids designing without having the techinical knowledge of actually constructing it. Is it true of all of the graduating class?

I remember reading an article about a CSM MA student who had a great collection and the writer was surprised to see the his collection was made well, because they don't really see technical ability in CSM students.

I'm sure they teach you the basic things.. I heard the first year get an intense 'crash course'.. so they'll understand how their designs are constructed etc.
And they probably get technicians' help.
But just from what I heard (not first hand experience), for the BA final year shows, the majority of them get others to make it.
Not sure about MA though, cos a lot of them would'nt have come straight from the BA course, but had some industry experience.

^yea, the MA at CSM is probably a worthy year(s) to take, especially if you want to be recognized in the industry since the show has become very public and the 'important' people attend it.
but the BA....im doubting. im sure there will be some, a little technical teaching in BA CSM, but i dont want to pay a mass amount of money for a 'crash course' that i can take for much less money in toronto.

a csm student paying a lcf student to make his/her thesis collection? and people say csm students have an air of arrogance...

ARA is now officially my 'dream' school, haha. my 'dream' school kept changing, from parsons to CSM to ARA.
ARA does take the best of the best, but even from the first year, there seems to be alot of bests.

I'm not taken at CSM for foundation studies so I'm going to apply to ARA ! I hope I'll be taken there as I live from 5 minutes Belgium ( I've studied there too when I was a toddler ) and because this schools seems brilliant as CSM.

This is honestly the biggest information runaround I have ever been on, the academy (not fashion department) website must have changed recently because I could actually navigate the old one. I have no idea how to apply or do ANYTHING, and almost all of their information is from 2000-2001! I'm going to try calling the school on Monday and see if I can finally get some actual ansewrs!
