Christian Dior Haute Couture F/W 2006.07 Paris

In regards to Healy's work, I think part of it comes from the sectional feeling of the HC shows, different sections with different feels and looks. I wish he did more mixing though, SS 04 & FW 04 HC shows were amazing, the mixing, taking that boring Little Richard song mixing it into a dance song.

Yes i agree... i love when he mixes music rather than just doing the simple fading in and out, which he has been doing lately in the couture shows unfortunately...

i dont really like the sections in dior shows now...i guess its nice to have a range of clothes, but i actually prefer everything in one show, rather than 5 mini shows, although i think some prefer the mini shows...
I agree.....although, I felt it worked nicely in FW 05 couture. I don't know why it doesn't work as well here, though. Granted, the clothes are beautiful, but, to me, there really isn't a common thread (pardon the pun) that binds the collection together, sure there's the armor, but that's about it to me. In FW 05 couture, there was continuity, y'know?, with the nude and the sheerness of everything....it flowed well. This show, not so much. It's still a good show, though...I don't hate it.

Come as you are...

But wasn't it sort of his intention to do very different parts? Because each part a different astrological sign.

And the space suit... The theme was astrological signs- astronomy- space.

oh yeah.....that's true. Well, the theme and idea connected them, but the clothes themselves didn't have much in common, though.

when i compare this to some of my favourite dior shows (ss04, fw03, fw04) etc. it makes me realise how much i dont like this one....

I feel the same way...:(

This season's couture show is one big spectacle, but I generally agree that the sections seem somewhat disjointed. It's difficult to reconcile the fact that there's this big brooding section using lots of black and fur (the section opened by Ekaterina) and then suddenly there's another section that has great big rolling dresses with all sorts of colour gradients - it's less of ONE collection but rather a series of a few different ones. The good thing is that Galliano gets to present a lot of things in one show, but the bad thing is that viewers sometimes get a bit thrown off course when they're shown something else after getting used to a certain mood in one section.

In retrospect, I'd say S/S 06 HC had a lot more - WAY lot more continuity than this season's show. And the music was a lot more enchanting - really made you FEEL the geist of the show.

Nonetheless, I'd still say this is one good couture collection. And I'm glad there's none of those white semi-geisha semi-clown make-up that Dior shows used to be so fond of.

Galliano uses the same technique again in later shows.
i love the fact that it emphasizes the waist to bring out the curve of the body (only in that silver gown. the rest doesn't look really well)

i agree. i think that the clothes and the presentation should speak for themselves. in this case, it seems that galliano has to verbally explain how it's all connected or the audience won't have any idea about its "story" (which every show presents). what's frustrating is that the theme and the setting couldv'e worked and it was brilliant. the clothes themselves and the presentation, not so much. galliano has talent but why oh why does he need this type of overt extravaganza?

p.s.
those panels that sit below the waist of his dresses are a good concept. i just wish he wouldn't overdo it. he did that in '05, it reappeared on charlize in '06. i must say though that that silver dress is exquisite!:flower:

I agree with everyone who has said they don't like the sectional presentation. That's my main complaint, although, I think it was kind of necessary for this collection. I can't really see the show working as well if it was seamless.

But I do miss Jeremy's brilliant mixing abilities, which unfortunately aren't being used here.

Oh well, I still love the clothes and there's always next season.

In regards to the X shaped waist, I'm pretty sure that it was a silhouette Monsieur Dior introduced back in the day.

The theme was not astrological signs at all. It was armor. And since Scorpio and Cancer have armor, they were put in the show. That's all Zodiac I saw. And because one part was partially inspired by Dali he put up the astrological background, since if I remember reading that correctly somewhere, it had something to with Dali.

The colored suit section was inspired by Dali's wife Gala. I don't think the zodiac theme was literal (except for the armor), I think it tied in with the whole medieval thing more than anything else.

^ i didn't know that. thanks! some of those suits remind me of a bit more elaborate yves saint laurent from afar.

^ Yes, I can definitly see some '80s Saint Laurent in the bright colors and beading. But it also reminds me a lot of Galliano's own f/w 03 collection (which was also inspired by Gala Dali.)

^ Very much indeed... even the make-up is incredibly alike:
