Yes indeed! I was in shock. THEN, she stumbled at the Haute Couture show. Where is she now? :innocent:

Oooooooh! Like with shiny silver catsuits and diamond-studded rayguns! Alien headbands and 9-inch platform moonboots!

Hell yeah! That and enormous 'space' helmets with Swarvski crystal studded Dior logos all over it...I wonder if Galliano would consider this

Is there anything Galliano hasn't referenced...Just to see something new, why not Outerspace Couture... :P
:o Oooooooh! Like with shiny silver catsuits and diamond-studded rayguns! Alien headbands and 9-inch platform moonboots! [/b][/quote]
i'd just love to see a collection where galliano has no "inspiration", no references, no anything........ just his own mind and creativity.
that would be amazing imo....and a true test of his "genius"

Brilliant use of color!

wow, what an insane thread.

it took me FOREVER to read through all of the pages here.

but, after reading and reviewing everything, i really do see the strong vivienne westwood "references" (blatant copying) that softgrey was referring to...
it's definitely apparent- but, as always, done in john's "own style"
i definitely do see a connection between the f/w 1995 collection  that brian mentioned (and posted a few looks from) ... but then i do agree with what one of you (sorry, forgot the name) said about how it's not TOTAL ripoff as he did use a couple different fabrics, techniques and silhouettes.

also, the use of the giant platform shoes again just makes me
it really doesn't get more westwood than those.
i really do like them though and want to see this new incarnation of them after already owning nearly every other pair of them that's come out so far
they were a pretty successful shoe for dior, i must add, as he keeps extrapolating upon that and doing more and more interpretations of them with every season (just look at the 'ballet' shoes from s/s 04...the heel and platform are exactly the same)

but yeah- all in all, i really do like this collection...and anticipate seeing the show on dior.com whenever it's up. one of the articles on a previous page stated that the soundtrack was 1950's rockabilly tunes!? ...kind of an interesting choice imo, but i'd have to hear it for myself to see if/how it works...

and at least he didn't use the sex pistols, to drive us all batty and force softgrey and i to come after him with shovels

Dior Gives Screen Sirens a Royal Makeover

by Joelle Diderich

PARIS (Reuters) - Screen sirens were given a royal makeover at the Christian Dior haute couture show on Tuesday, where bombshell gowns fit for a showgirl were paired with diamond tiaras and furs in a decadently opulent mix.

It looked as if British designer John Galliano had raided the crown jewels as he bedecked models with chandelier earrings, jeweled crowns and even a gold orb and scepter.

But these were no stuffy European royals. Rather, they brought to mind the type of consort played by Marilyn Monroe in "The Prince and the Showgirl."

With their hair piled into messy pompadours and their tiaras perched skew-whiff, models preened to a rock 'n roll soundtrack in bustiers with conical bras and nipped-in waists that made for a 1950s hourglass figure. :brows:

Guests including actors Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Hurley trekked out to a polo club outside Paris for the display, causing a traffic jam in the normally tranquil Bois de Boulogne.

Kilmer had a simple reason for attending his first ever fashion show. "Women. What else do you want me to say?" the laid-back actor told reporters as he arrived.

Feminine curves abounded, with hips emphasized by giant folds of fabric and exaggerated fishtail skirts.

Handpainted cherubs on a cream silk dress reflected Galliano's fascination for the 18th century, when excess was celebrated in the baroque paintings of artists like Fragonard.

With a shrinking number of practitioners, haute couture is a symbol of excess in a fragile economic climate.

Every outfit on the catwalk is a one-off requiring hundreds of hours of work by skilled seamstresses and embroiderers using techniques handed down from generation to generation.

The dresses will travel around the world to be photographed for glossy fashion magazines before ending up in private collections or museums.

In the meantime, Galliano will tone down his extravagant designs to suit the tastes and pockets of the handful of wealthy women who can afford his made-to-measure creations.

Yeah but VW stole those references too, didn't she? It just may be a British thing, Brit designers making sure of their history and their traditions represented by costume, clothing, and technique.

To me, the collection just screams love, love for a piece of the industry that people say is irrelevant, for the art and craft that many other designers are leaving at the drop of a hat. Dior is showing off their resources, their muscle and at the same time making an investment in the future of couture for all of us beginning designers or future designers that may have to come of age and work in an era without it.

It's a very strong, extreme presentation and point of view but I would much rather have that kind of passion spilling out on the runway, the kind of passion that causes silly little back and forths about the supposed genius of John Galliano than to have designers just sit back and watch couture go down in flames.

To me, Galliano is passing the torch. The exciting thing is that there is someone on this thread or reading this in passing who is going to be intellegent enough, passionate enough, and loving enough to pick it up and take it further.

From Yahoo News:

In his show for Christian Dior earlier in the day, British designer John Galliano had shown only evening wear, anchoring the display firmly in the realm of fantasy. His corsets were so tight that several models fainted upon exiting the catwalk.

My goodness...they must have been tight...

If I can put in my twopennoth

I NEVER thought I would end up praising VIVIENNE WESTWOOD for her creations , but these derivative offerings fom GALLIANO really emphasise her originality . B)

What Galliano has given us the last week , both women and men , can only be described as ' DRAG ' .

Now these creations for men and women MAY be toned down , but I cannot imagine even simplified versions in any other place than a club for trans-gender dressing ' show offs ' !!! :o

Sorry to all the Galliano fans , but these self - indulgent trashy offerings have gone their length , ( Monsieur Arnault , please note !!! ) .

KIT :innocent:

I love  dior i always have and for those of you who look here and say "how could you wear that" and "is that really practical?" well you have to look at it from an artists point of veiw. Fashion this eccentric is not to wear but for eyes to see and glorify!!!! see art like dior is just like an abstract painting done on a person instead of a canvas.

he never ceases to amaze me!!!

The amount of hours involved in each piece is cleary visible. I can appreciate it even if it is not wearable because the creativity is just grande!

KIT...as usual...i agree 100% with your assessment about the DRAG aspect of this show...and how it really emphasizes the talent of the designer

...vivienne westwood is the designer i refer to ...of course... ;)

everyone knows that galliano and mcqueen are heavily influenced by VW and are considered the post-punk designers...however..i think it really went too far this time...especially since i saw the exhibit at the V&A...i can see the direct correlations...

and as far as galliano passing the torch....have you taken a look at that diva strutting down the catwalk...honey...you're going to have to wrench that torch out of his cold dead hands if you want it...

:innocent:
