Softgrey, you sound like you have a really interesting job!! Can you post more about how you got into it and generally what you do since I am interested in being a fashion stylist myself but am not really sure where to get started after college. This is probably not the appropriate thread for that discussion though!
i believe there is a thread about that already...mehg started it...i've posted all of that info repeatedly ...please look for it as i'd rather not repeat myself...if you have a specific question you can always pm me...and i will do my best to answer it... :P ;)

and for those of you who say all publicity is good...look at ben and jen... :innocent: sometimes too much is just....too much...

though i had a look at galliano's spring merch at saks fifth avenue yesterday...it looks remarkably like alaia from the 80's... but it was quite lovely...he has the talent...he's just really not using it well...

Geez, I missed all the good talk for this topic. Anyhoo, I really liked this collection, not necessarily as much as last seasons' but definitly a beautifully detailed extravaganza. That first gown on Karlolina......to die for! The color is gorgeous and the silhouette is just so extreme. Overall what I liked about this collection was the silhouettes in general, especially that narrow-to-the-knees and then an explosion of fabric. Some of the embroidery, while incredible done, was a bit too much for me, but it's couture, so I can overlook it. Honestly, I think that this collection, with the emphasis on evening gowns can be very easily translated for the couture clients. The shapes and folding that Galliano used can be made into a less extreme version for the customer. Overall, really, really liked it......and does anyone find Galliano's choice of inspirations a lot like something he would've used back in the early days of his career? I mean, Prussian and Austrian emporesses....it's kinda vintage Galliano, no?

QUOTE
THE Christian Dior couture show in Paris yesterday was straight out of a fashion designer's nightmare. John Galliano, the label's head designer, apparently went overboard with his signature wacky corsets and heavy Turkish curtain-like fabrics. According to our source, "Alek Wek vomited before the show because her corset was too tight. And poor Karolina Kurkova — her dress was so heavy and awkward, when she walked down the runway, she lost her balance and fell off the runway completely. Because her outfit was so heavy it took four men to get her back up and going."

i find this completly ridiculous.. models fainting and all,
whats the use if one needs to suffer in order to wear the 'gowns'

the lameness of Galliano's 'creations' is so evident in those
'backstage' photos where apart from the point that the poor girls are unable to walk in the dresses they look pure grotesque, unreal and nightmarish in 'natural environment'

as for the shoes..  :yuk:

i wont get started on the choice of music..
or on the state of Galliano's hair/look at the final bow :yuk:

I liked the photos of the dresses in the "natural environment"... they look so surreal, and the girls are complete amazons towering above everyone else.

i just love it

also, in the natural sunlight (as apposed to the stage lights), the dresses look SO much nicer...the detail and colors are seen the way they're meant to be seen.

i don't think the dresses are "grotesque" or "nightmarish" at all.... perhaps the only ones that could be classified as such are the fishtail ones... the rest of which are actually wearable.

the entire show was amazing, and i love it no matter what anyone says.

Brim that red dress on miss K. was my favorite in the collection.

And I was like, doing a double take when I looked through the pictures of the models being escorted from the runway, they made those guys look like midgets. Especially Tiiu.

man you are so caught up in the Galliano hype that you're blinding yourself from the truth.
no WAY are any of them wearable...........you can even see this from your pictures.......the models need people to help them walk in them

Of course they're wearable, once they're tweaked from the runway version. You could take any of those gowns and make them less huge, plus not wear platforms with them, and they'll be wearable gowns with a big hem, nothing major. I don't think Galliano intended for them to be worn by the clients as is, you have to make them more realistic in terms of size and volume. But the basis of the dress and the silhouttes and details, are easily wearble, if you have the money and the need.

well to be honest i dont see many people wanting a dress made out of that kind of fabric....... they look like heavy curtain fabrics......
so no doubt they are extremely heavy

good eye acid, i think i've read somewhere that those are Turkish curtain fabrics
and yes, models need help to carry the weight.

that's my point on Galliano's vision.
Taken as a rule that designers present on shows their creative vision, this here is what Galliano wants his clients to wear and thats the total look he'd prefer his clients to have when wearing the gowns. I really believe that this IS his vision,
any watering down would make these gowns even more grotesque.

These are opera costumes, this is not couture

look here they even have to hold the dress to stay in shape :P
poor karen, she sure is suffering, i wonder how mad the models must be with him..
but then they must be totally well payed :innocent:
i so pity them for the experience.. :ninja:

Erin looks quite angry here backstage.

If the models find it hard to waer the clothes, girls who have more experiance of wearing corsetry than 'normal' people, that shows that the dresses are not completely wearable. Do women really need to suffer that much to look good?

I was under the impression that the models were escorted because of the size of the dress combined with the high platforms making them difficult to walk in, and they were probably holding them so that the hem didn't drag and get ruined.

And I think that those guys were helping them as it is the gentlemanly thing to do. This collection rocks B)

SCREEN SAVER: It was celebrity gridlock at the Christian Dior show that kicked off couture week on Tuesday, with Oprah Winfrey, “Trojan” beauty Diane Kruger, artist Tracey Emin and Elizabeth Hurley among the assorted glitterati. “I wanted a moment of magic,” said French actress Juliette Binoche, who just wrapped up a film in San Francisco with Richard Gere called “Bee Season.” Actress Katie Holmes was making her couture debut, traveling from London where she has been working on her next movie, “Batman Begins.” “I’m making a very quick round-trip just for Dior,” she confessed. Meanwhile, rapper-turned-designer Eve proved her “Fetish” for fashion is in good form. “This is my second Dior couture show and it’s as exciting as always,” she purred.

i don't really know much about hermes or firstview.com...but i thought that firstview.com wasn't updating hermes collections anymore...but if that's true how did hintmag.com get these pictures from firstview.com...i'm very confused (and wanting to see more detailed pics of the collection even if i have to pay firstview.com)

ok i am a little confused on how quoting works with the new format of tFs (although i am still loving the makeover)...but responding to lena's earlier post (and not another that i accidently posted)

there are very few (if any) designers who put forth only looks which would translate easily into the real world...i love tom ford to death but i would not respect a woman who came out of the house with those purple nipples pasted on themselves. i love chanel, but we all know that most of those jackets are paired with jeans-of-the-moment, choos, and an attitude. we aren't operating like five six years ago where you could just buy off the runway and wear it on the street. it takes a more discerning eye.

that grey dress would look wonderful on a woman of a certain age without DRAMATIC change. it would be brought in and the flair would be calmed around her feet, but it would work...and remember galliano, like all of his couturiers (sp?), only has to appeal to a very very very small market. he sells six dresses this season and he's almost broken even with couture is the way i look at it.

Acid, you're talking around the subject....wearability is not pointed out by Brian in this case...duh that these outfits are terribly unwearable, even Galliano has to know that...being caught up by a Galliano hype is total nonsense....there are more people here who hate this collection then love it so there hardly is any hype right now, at least not a positive one....and blinding from the truth is a ridiculous thing to say...we are discussing opinions here and Brian posted his opinion here....he loves the way the clothes look and he thinks they are beautiful, so there is no blinding of the truth in here...I love the way they look too, they are so beautiful in my opinion, the only thing is that they are NOT wearable, that doesn't make them ugly if you'd ask me....
