Costume Institute Gala 2008 "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy"

- fm.

am i the only one who spotted a close-up of tilda and thought, "battlestar galactica."

My FAVORITES!!!
Christina Ricci - AMAZING!
Zac Posen - AMAZING!
Camilla Bell
Katie Holmes
Coco Rocha - GREAT!
Raquel Zimmermann - WONDERFUL!
Caroline Trentini

Everyone else is either BORING or simply WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY AND THEIR STYLISTS THINKING!?!?!? I am seriously not grasping how truly AWFUL some of these people look and not even fathoming how much their stylists got paid for these atrocious looks and to think of how much better I could do in a few minutes!

Very disappointed!!
Most of the guests looked boring and some really awful (what were Victoria B.,Maggie G. and Scarlett J. thinking when they wore those dresses? :yuk:
And Sasha P. looked like a corpse in that dress!!)

Eva Mendes,Hilary Roda and Gisele looked gorgeous and very sexy.
Kate Moss,Kate Bosworth,Stam,Raquel and Coco looked very nice.
Biggest surprise was Ashley Olsen. How did see manage to look so go for once?!!

The select few who are lucky enough to snag an invite to the annual Costume Institute gala (a.k.a. the Oscars of the East) are encouraged, nay, obliged, to push the sartorial envelope. And with this year's "Superheroes" theme—one that's brimming with caped possibility—the task appeared almost too easy. But as it turned out, many of the glitterati making their way up the steps of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art had circumvented the theme and opted for glamour served straight up. Fortunately for the ever-growing group of stylewatchers who monitor this event with the intensity of a comic-book nerd on the trail of a first-run copy of Spider-Man, others embraced the night's motif.

Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, who co-hosted the gala with Giorgio Armani, Julia Roberts, and George Clooney, set the tone in a space-age Chanel couture bolero and gown, modeled after the X-Men's Storm. Lake Bell, a guest of the magazine, wore a Balmain dress zipping with Shazam lightning bolts picked out in crimson beads. Certainly Claire Danes looked tough (and chic) enough to save lives in a graphic, strappy Narciso Rodriguez gown. And in her gold, almost winged Atelier Versace dress, a glowing Amber Valletta took the superhero to heavenly heights. Gareth Pugh, meanwhile, was dressed as Karl Lagerfeld, giant rings and all. His rationale: ″I came as my superhero.″

Some guests were first-timers to the Met and its attendant paparazzi gauntlet. "When they take a photo of me, I'm just like, 'Oh, my God, that's amazing that you know who I am,'" said a giddy Bell. A frazzled Blake Lively accidentally knocked a tape recorder out of a reporter's hand. "Oh, my gosh, I am so sorry," she said, sounding genuinely mortified. "My superhero power is breaking your thing." Of course, with an event as major as this, merely getting dressed requires near-heroic feats. "My husband put my Spanx on me tonight because I had wet nails," said Thandie Newton.

Once inside, guests were ushered past three enormous Nathan Crowley statues of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman and into the Temple of Dendur, where trumpeters heralded the dinner call. ″Hail Caesar!" joked Chris Noth. At the Armani table, Julia Roberts and Victoria Beckham bonded over motherhood, while Tom Cruise leaned over Katie Holmes and licked her neck. Following dinner, guests were treated to a medley of songs from the Public Theater′s production of Hair, but the star performance of the night came later at the Bungalow 8 after-party, where Fergie and John Mayer serenaded birthday boy George Clooney with a rendition of "You Make Me Feel So Young."

Well, the gala wasn't so great this year but nevermind.

My uni did a much better job with the Superhero costumes on Saturday at our end of year party than these guys did last night! Lol!

 Natasha Poly looked stunning

im still upset about kimora, i hope i dont see it anymore. awful. it makes me wanna cry.

im still gushing over christina's!<3 and zacposen<33

I didn't mind Coco's dress. Stam's eye makeup was too dark for me, not too sure about the uber-short dress either. I liked Kate Bosworth's choice, but nothing amazing about it either. Ashley Olsen looked gorgeous. All in all though, no real standouts.

my favorites, most especially because they followed the gala's theme!

(1) katie holmes/kate mara. they are so tied. kata and zac looked amazing, and katie looked like a glamourous wonder woman. (2) raquel zimmermann/bee schaffer/coco rocha. they all reminded me of poison ivy for some reason. bee, much more princess-like, and raquel as well as coco looked very sleek. i loved raquel's eye make-up. it was over-done, but that is the point! and i also loved coco's hair. (3) naomi watts, hands down! she nailed the theme and managed to look absolutely beautiful.

anna wintour looked as if she was wearing princess leia's hair, and sasha p. looked as if she was about to jazzersize. :(

I think I'm going to start a petition drive to move Kimora to LA or somewhere...I'm sick of her and her kids and ex and everything...Go to Hollywood where they admire egocentric divas...Maybe she can hang out with Naomi Cambell and get rid of her too... But, Naomi wasn't there last night, so that's a plus...

^ as much as she looked horrible at the gala event, leave kimora in upper saddle river! she fits in with the snots there. :p i sort of enjoy her snotty attitude, though. :innocent:

ugh she shouldnt even have a snotty attitude because most of the time she looks terrible. still confused on what she was doing there... ugh cant stand her!... i mean seriously look at the dress for like 30 seconds and the whole look.

^ i don't think that she looks terrible all of the time. and i think her snotty attitude adds to her somewhat charm. personal opinion, is all! but i don't know what she was thinking when she dressed for the gala. it looks horrible, horrible, horrible.
