SHANGHAI, China — Dolce & Gabbana has cancelled a high-profile catwalk show in Shanghai following an outcry over what many in China perceived to be a racist marketing campaign.
A video posted on Weibo Monday of a Chinese model attempting to eat Italian food with chopsticks was taken down after less than 24 hours, but widely shared on both Chinese platforms and Instagram.

A social media outcry was made worse with comments attributed to Stefano Gabbana and Dolce & Gabbana’s official Instagram accounts on Wednesday, the day its #DGTheGreatShow catwalk presentation was scheduled to take place in Shanghai.
In what the brand claims was a hack on the accounts, derogatory comments about China and Chinese commenters were published. Though quickly taken down, screenshots were widely shared on Chinese social media, along with the trending hashtag #BoycottDolce.
Guests have now been informed that the event will no longer go ahead. Reports are circulating that the brand was forced to cancel by local authorities, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Rumours ahead of the show’s cancellation circulated that many expected Chinese celebrity guests would be no-shows.
It’s the second high-profile outcry over racist messaging the brand has faced in only 18 months, with a #DGLovesChina campaign depicting Beijing in a way Chinese netizens felt looked backwards and underdeveloped.
