Jean-Paul Gaultier Haute Couture F/W 2005.06 Paris

This collection is absolutely AMAZING!

The stronger part of the collection came from the latter half and what a latter half it was! Gaultier proves he is a master of couture by taking the most popular trends of the season (African, Folkloric, etc) and making them fresh, beautiful and necessary. This is the result of pulling out all the stops in creating a full force fantasia in vision (as opposed to the interpretations of R-T-W) and using the finest fabrics and materials and techniques in intricate detailing.

Long live Haute Couture!

it's my favourite hc collection so far and I haven't even seen all the pictures. It feels folkloric to me esp the gowns, brings to mind the firebird illustrations by Ivan Bilibin, Palekh or Edmund Dulac and even a little Kay Nielsen, which maybe explains why I find it so appealing.

I've only a vague idea of the distinctions between these looks but I'm very interested if you could explain them better to me?

Well, I certainly wouldn't say it's bad, but I can't say I like it either. The craftsmanship on display is indeed impressive, but that's as it should be for couture...I guess Gaulter's HC collections always strike me as more costume than fashion, so it's hard for me to take the clothing seriously.

YSL , the first two and the last are very YSL.

Love this dress, but Lily Cole is exceptionally ugly...Is she sleeping with someone who matters?

Good eye Diorling! Those coats are absolute gorge!!

And yes, you can definitely see the YSL influence in the pictures you posted, along w/ other pieces from the collection. But, if you look closely enough, you can almost always see a YSL reference in Gaultiers work, esp. w/ couture. Take, for example, last seasons African-inspired beaded outfit--that piece right there was definitely YSL (unfortunately I dont have the pics for that one).

And that green dress that Lily Cole is wearing is amazing, both the pleats & and that rich shade of green. Unfortunately, I dont think Lily Cole was the right model for it. I think a redhead definitley would've enhanced the color of the dress best, but if it were my choice, I would've chose Karen Elson. But it's definitely better the reddish/orange-ish outfit she wore last season--she looked like a walking ball of fire in that number.

Galliano could take lessons from JPG in mixing extravagance and restraint in a superb and sublime way. Hands down the best couture show since....ever!

If anyone needed more informations on his inspiration for this collection, gaultier said he was inspired by a trip he made to Kiev, capital of Ukrainia (sp?). It looks a bit like YSL's collection of 73 and like his own s/s collection, nevertheless it is quite original as he chose not to show the classical Russian Empire-tzar-inspired gowns and jewellerey, and instead came up with something more folk that brings to mind the moujiks (sp?), peasants and gitans from Eastern Europe. He also said he wanted to give the impression he got when he went to Kiev, where, as you may know, recently happened what's called the "Orange Revolution", a feeling of freedom, a strong desire for fashion and a kind of wildness that he felt in the people there.

Agreed. I don't know if it's her body shape that throws it off? It woulda looked loads better on Karen or either of these girls from his fall collection:

the best collection for HC this season... i love it.

i just fell in love with the whole show and the collection. i am not a big fan of prints and bohemiana but gaultier really injected coutureability in the collection. i also love the fact the girls looked pure and natural, (we all get used to couture shows must have heavy make up). there were alot of wearable pieces, the skirt flounces, the lovely prints, everything beautiful and simple.

Agreed, one of the season's finest. He's managed to give his stamp on a trend that has been in the air in all markets and given it the final seal of approval. His forte, like YSL himself, was not to always be the first to start a trend, but to do it BEST. That is what (fashion) history remembers.
