My latest project: French Market Tote

I had to knit another bag. You gals should try this one, it's really cute! I got the pattern from Knitty.com. It's a felted French Market Tote. I added a stripe to the pattern, and then I added a button in the middle so stuff wouldn't fall out. Made with Lamb's Pride Yarn in Charcoal Grey and Lotus Pink, with size 11 needlse. I also had to adjust the pattern a little bit, because it was getting too big. :) I plan to make another one for my mom.

Before:

and After I threw it into the washer (after this.. i sewed on a button, which is not in the picture):

the felted tote is excellent. what are the dimensions now?

i love knitty.com

to felt something, the easy way, do you just throw regular yarn (or does it have to be wool?) into the washing machine? i've always wanted to do this but wasn't exactly sure about it. i guess i could look at knitty..i like that site too, but maybe i don't spend enough time really looking it.

Aziandoll did the bag shrink much...and what heat was the washer on? I love it!
I never really thought of doing it with knitted wool...I always just thought that you did it by putting unspun yarn in at a high heat...our textiles teacher used to sew unspun wool inside little cotton squares and would put them in the washing machine.

to felt, you need wool or a predominantly wool blend. i think some other animal fibers might felt as well.

re:felting -

Fill washing machine with economy/half load, hot water, a small amount of detergent, a towel or a pair of jeans [something to provide some agitation in the wash] and the bag. Run the wash cycle, checking every 10 minutes until the bag has felted to desired consistency. You should no longer be able to see the stitch definition.

thanks so much, meme! i was thinking of felting a scarf at some point, maybe i'll try with a test scrap just to make sure i get the hang of it.

ps off topic...that field of flowers looks familiar..central coast? it's beautiful!

Thanks everyone! The bottom of the bag is 8 inches square, the walls of the bag are 6 inches tall, and the handles are also 6 inches tall. Next time I make another one, I plan to make the walls of the bag taller, because the bag is a bit shallow, so I had to sew a button loop and button on it for a closure. ^_^

I put the bag in hot wash/ cold rinse cycle, and I let it spin dry and everything. I did stop and reset it once, I think, during the wash (agitation) cycle. Another thing, is to make sure you wash it in a top loader that can let you stop and check the felting if needed. If you wash it in a side loading washer, it would be impossible to check.

100% wool would have shrunk more. I used Lamb's Pride which is 85%wool and 15%mohair. If you gals are looking for the pattern, it's in the archives of Knitty.com. Just look under bags... and you'll see the pattern. Have fun!

i just finished another scarf for a friend, a very sculptural neck scarf in a bright, vibrant yellow. i attached a button to keep it closed.

i really hope she likes it!
