Model Casting F/W 10.11

^Liu Wen arrived late to Milan - literally a few hours before Fendi - and thus missed quite a few of the castings, so I wouldn't worry about her too much (As she'll take over Paris again anyway). It's not really as if Ming, Feifei, and co. are completely taking over the token Asian spot, anyway (Shu Pei is not doing much beyond Russell Marsh shows herself, like Liu would've). There have been less Asian models being featured in the major Milan shows in general, unless you count Jil Sander's notable two...which won't really amount to too much in the end :P

does anyone know who is the CD for Francesco Scognamiglio? For a relatively more unknown designer he's had a pretty solid casting over the past few seasons.

Ok. There's something weird about this girl Joan booking all the blue ship shows...

Yeah, Feifei is not doing that well. actually being the only Asian models at Jil Sander for a long time is great, but it's nothing that takes you to another level since we all know what happens to Jil Sander girls after two seasons (especially their exclusives). Good that Russel Marsh uses her, apparently only in London, which is still good but nothing breathtaking though as his major shows do likely take only place in Milan (okay + Miu Miu in Paris).
Mengyao Ming Xi list of shows is very large, there's a lack of quality except of Jil Sander and Pucci though. She did well of course but i wouldn't make it sound like Mengyao Ming Xi (cute name btw!) and Feifei would have their big breakthoughs yet. In fact, 2 or 3 major shows count more than 20 non-a-class-shows. But second season is way more important than the first one, though, so there is room for more hehe.

Extremely interesting question, unfortunately I don't have the answer. But if someone has it, I'd be the second to be happy to know...

Actually it's even interesting beyond Francesco Scognamiglio and it seems I've read similar requests on other castings. I don't know if it's the first season I pay so much attention to this but there are quite a bunch of less-known shows who enjoy a rock-solid cast. I'm a bit more familiar with Paris so it's something I've experienced there before as well (Wauchob for example isn't the best known runway of the city but definitely has one of the most interesting and quite powerful casting) but this time I counted a few similar cases in all three other towns.

sorry, but what's an in-house casting? And I heard from in-house models but idk what this is.. could s.o explain? :flower:

it's always the same, every season there is a more or less new black it girl that is doing enormously well, last season it were Lindsey Scott being at Prada and Mia Nariara being at Fendi, Lagerfeld and VS, and this season both of them just walked a few shows and don't book anything in Europe unless they are not even intown.

When the designers themselves/ or creative director cast the girls due to financial issues or individual initiative. Karl Lagerfeld for example casts all of this shows.

I'm surprised more designers don't do that, what if someone gets cast for their show they don't like?

These castings in the shows have been so dull. To me it seems like it's the same girls in all the shows, or maybe they all just look so similar. I'm really hoping Paris has some more exciting castings. Though I'm sure due to the economy they can't book that many vets in the shows anymore.

^There is truly very much to be done just before the shows begin, so it's easier and often times, cheaper, to outsource the casting portion of the production. The designer will sit-in at most of the casting sessions and have high authority, but this way they can still maintain focus on the actual collection in the days leading up to the show.

Castings in Europe are nowadays - especially this season - more of "followers", say the Directors and Designers do rather use girls that were well-booked all over NYC and London than being "discoverers" and booking completely new girls that weren't in NYC and London at all or underrated.
It became a general thinking in society these days to not risk something at any price, and this does of course involve fashion and thus the castings.
It sometimes feels like that everybody seems just to think of himself and the passion of everything is a little bit lost. When have we last time seen a collection or casting that was really literally breathtaking unexcepted? Okay, CK was cool haha, well, I hope you get my point....^_^

so true. I mean i don't want to see Natasha or Sasha retire any time soon, but it's like every single major runway in Milan so far has these two in them. And I'm getting a little tired of seeing them.

I actually like that the top models are back walking the top shows, it adds more to the runway casting when say a new girl walks alongside them. A new face walking in a sea of Natashas, Sashas, Anjas.. looks much more impressive than a new face walking along a sea of new faces.. even if it is a top show.

^ I definitely agree.
It just seems most of the shows are seas of new faces with the Natashas and Sashas standing out :p instead of the other way around

A show full of new faces is offputting for me.
Calvin Klein did it perfectly by putting 90's girls and new girls together......made it very interesting and of course Prada with the VS girls makes a talking point. It would be tough to talk about only new girls...other than saying 'who that?' etc.
Versace this season got it painfully wrong with too many new similar girls.

which is the reason why we have so many girls that are "away" after 2 seasons look how bad Ranya M and Karolin W do this season....

Do the casting directors actually have to stick to specifications given by the designers?
Like if Miuccia would say to Marsh:" Russel my lovely Dear, this time, please cast 10 established, 5 semi-established, 5 newcomers and 5 comeback models for my show. All my very best, Miuccia."?:D

For me, seeing the established girls walk the show adds character to the show. Seeing the see of unknowns lacks that because I don't know any of them and they all tend to look the same to me. I know some designers do it on purposes so as not to distract from the clothing, but it has the opposite effect on me. I lose interest in the clothing because I couldn't care less about the girls presenting it.

And so few of them fit that typical sexy vibe that Versace is known for. Now the VS girls would have been perfect for this show.

I agree. With a few exceptions, I find the recent selections rather insipid. I do hope that Paris is more diverse.
