Assuming that she is not put in a hideous outfit, no one should be surprised that anyone who has done significant work for VS can perform adequately or better on a high fashion runway, even if she does not have a high fashion background. If a model has walked for VSFS, that means that she has already beat out thousands of models for her spot in the show and that she is comfortable and confident enough to parade around in her drawers before an arena full of people and in front of millions on TV. If you are an actual angel, you have most likely been interviewed on television, made appearances at store openings, walked the red carpet and been involved in charity work. I, like many others, didnt think that Doutzen look good at all, but a lot of that was the outfit, and while I think she failed to do what Miss Tyra refers to as "modelling through," she is not some cautionary tale against casting non-high fashion models.
These days being "high fashion" enough to be cast in most of the prestigious shows, editorials and campaigns is more about having the look that is in demand by the designers, photographers and editors, it is more an accident of birth than a skill. Don't get me wrong, to stay in the game past the point where you aren't the freshest young thing on the block takes some degree of skill, along with professionalism, good relationships and determination. Also there are models out there who I do consider as being highly skilled at the craft of fashion modeling like Natasha Poly, Anja Rubik and Raquel Zimmermann, but again for the most part high fashion is more about having the right look. No one should be surprised that a VS angel who regularly interacts with people from all walks of life can hold her own against an elfin / alienesque teenager who can barely walk in heels.
