I wonder what would have happened if they had brought back a cleaned up Galliano...I suspect it would have been a success after the initial controversy...

They don't want to.

Personally, I feel sad that we may not get to see Galliano's work as much again. But it is rather exciting to see what comes of this. The sooner the better, IMO, the last Dior collections made me sick.

Meh, whether he works at Dior or LV, they're all the same now. There's no style anymore. even less so when they're all owned under the one umbrella. Just shuffling deck chairs is all they're doing

Louis Vuitton has just announced that they are planning to unveil an exhibition during Milan Fashion Week that will pay tribute to their artistic director of 14 years, Marc Jacobs.

So... It sounds true.

^also, she has mastered the art of subtlety....something that just doesn't fly at vuitton. marc jacobs has given interviews where he stated that when he first arrived at vuitton that he tried to go that route -- only having the logo on the lining of things or in an inconspicuous way on a button -- but the vuitton customer wanted the obvious, the loud, the brash, the conspicuous. i don't think vuitton -- or the corporate behemoth it supports -- wants to give up all that money in the name of subtlety. their money is better spent buying up shares of hermes and developing brands like celine to capture that market.

yeah, Vuitton's stuff has gotten louder and louder with each season lately. Marc's early stuff was really more on the subtle side, like the Vernis line, Monogram Mat, etc. talking with people at Vuitton, it's really getting apparent that their customers want it LOUD LOUD LOUD.

so i do wonder what kind of fit Phoebe would be. i'd love to have her minimalistic approach at Vuitton, but how well will things go if she'll be forced to be more brash?

^ Yes, I was always under the impression Vuitton was pretty quiet, but since Marc has been there I have not bothered following them very much...some of those multicolored bags are hideous- something I would expect to see at K Mart!

phoebe at vuitton would be perfect, but she's too fashion. vuitton is like coach now, the louder the better.

marc jacobs producing haute couture? LOL

If Elie Saab would take his aesthetic to the next level, then I'd like to see him in Dior. ^_^

The more I think about it, the more this MJ@Dior thing makes sense...I mean, I can't see before me what he will create at Couture. It's really exciting! He has never failed before (well, to me anyway, I like his Warholian vampire ways), but nobody can really imagine the Couture he will deliver.

Do or die.

the most exciting thing about this is...the bar jackets!! how will he reinvent one of the most important staples of the house? i really have high hopes for this. marc jacobs at dior is a great fit.

i am very excited for phoebe philo at LV...she has such a knack for revamping things and making them desirable...i remember everyone was talking about the bags when she was at chloé, and now céline, which is huuuge and very popular. it's going to be a great change, i guess.

I was never a fan of Marc Jacobs' work. I think he's too overrated.

i guess alaia DID end up signing onto dior...;)

new dior @ saks

Marc Jacobs is extremely talented, one of the most talented designers out there. But my issue with him, as others have mentioned, is that he is so inconsistent with his output. His direction changes drastically from season to season, he'll pick up one idea and then drop it only to pick it up again a few seasons later, or not at all. And not all of his collections are winners and over the past few years there have been fewer and fewer of them. I'm not sure he has to focus to do a brand like Dior properly, though he certainly has the vision. Jacobs going to Dior is not a terrible idea, I'd rather him than the mess Galliano had been doing, though it certainly is a bore.

Of course it should be noted that Jacobs is the last choice after Alaia, Ghesquiere, Alber Elbaz, Hedi Slimane, and Haider Ackermann didn't work out.

Stranger still is the option of Philo doing Vuitton. As others have mentioned, why would she want the extra work load? And also as others have mentioned, why jepordize the immense success she's had with Celine? She's worked a miracle there, I would leave a good thing as it is.

Seems like Arnault has had a few big decisions on his plate, including the hiring of Humberto Leon and Carol Lim to design Kenzo. In a couple of years we'll see how it all plays out.

I don't see how we can know that, really? I mean, you can approach people and feel them out for all sorts of reasons, knowing all along who you want to hire.
