Who Will Succeed John Galliano At Dior? #2 *Update Raf Simons Offically Hired*

My question is would this new future designer for Dior have the balls to reference the Galliano era of Dior? Would Dior even let them? Will they basically lock away Galliano's greatest hits in the Dior vault and never let the new Designer visit the archives?

Is it easier to transition or is it easier just to start brand new a fresh?

question heavy i know, but i am very curious along with everyone else

john galliano landed at dior with the help of fashion's ice queen, anna wintour, and one suspects that the next designer to helm such a historic and monied house will come from her stable. with that said, the guesses about olivier theyskens seem to have some traction: within the fashion commmunity, no one disputes his talent nor his ability to do the couture, and outside of the fashion community, he's already beloved by some core constituencies like music stars, socialites, etc. another pick remains haider ackermann not just because he's super-buzzworthy, but because karl lagerfeld has stated he could replace at chanel. that's a pretty major endorsement. i love giambattista valli, but one wonders if he has the wherewithal to handle a house of dior's size. they don't need another scandal after this. they need to pick someone who instantly energizes the house and allows it to move past this scandal from a public relations point of view. i like dark horse picks like thakoon, jason wu, roland mouret, jonathan saunders, but the one that stands out the most remains alexis mabille. he already designs couture (and menswear) and has his own line which, let's recall, lvmh also will need to replace the sales (and fill the retail space) of all of those john galliano stores it also owns.

the fallout has just begun and in its wake, one suspects, fierce competition for one of the toniest positions in all of fashion.

that's another thing...has Anna Wintour made any official comments yet? Will she stand by her creation, or will she abandon him like a brick on ice?

None of the proposed designers here make sense. Rodarte, Lacroix, Theyskens, etc - all are skilled designers, but have no experience with such a globalized company making its profits mainly off leather goods / bags / shoes etc. Honestly I don't think Rodarte or Theyskens or Ackerman are going to understand the customer base at Dior and be able to sell to them.

That might be your logic but I don't think it's LVMH's. Mind you they hired Galliano, McQueen, and Tisci without experience in such a globalized company making its profits mainly off leather goods / bags / shoes etc.
Dior keeps a team of merchandisers, product developers, etc to help the creative director with those bits. I believe what LVMH will want is exactly what they wanted before... a virtuoso, a proper designer who could carve their own legend -- which as we now know poses no actual danger to outshining the legend of Dior. There is a good possibility that the next designer will be an unknown, like others have mentioned, the LVMH network is vast and who knows how many designers they have put away on reserve within any one of their houses.

Mikeijames makes a good point about Ana Wintour's influence except that her power has waned in recent years. Don't get me wrong, she's still THE woman, but magazines don't have the same sway they used to. Women have many other alternatives to get their opinions from now. Mind you Nina Ricci defied her when they fired Olivier Theyskens. I'm sure they will ask her for her advice, I don't know if they will take it.

One thing I am sure of, they already know exactly who they want to replace Galliano with. They've known before this whole episode even began.

^It doesn't mean that he would have to leave Givenchy. I think Theyskens would be great, but realistically speaking, he wouldn't sell.

I have to say this is sad to see. Such a designer that I looked up to for years to far like this. Galliano was an insperation as a designer but now I have lost all respect for him, and that says a hell of a lot coming from me. But he has no one to blam but himself. Galliano was a design genius. Its just to bad the the brilliance of his mind was only surpassed by the STUPIDITY OF HIS MOUTH!!!!!!!!!

On happier notes I am actually very excited to see what happens at the house of Dior. I was wating to see a hugh change in Galliano but oh well. I want to see the a bit of the old drama combined with extremly inspiring ideas.

what does Lacroix doing these days...? :ninja: is he retired?

:woot: I would have never though of Lacroix. Thats actually an amazing suggestion.

Who Will Succeed John Galliano At Dior?

While emotions are still fresh and the entire case is far from being resolved, the fact is that after 14 years, John Galliano has been fired at Dior. And as we all know, fashion moves fast so the question of who will succeed Galliano as Dior's head designed rises fast. Any speculation, news or rumors regarding the matter can be posted and discussed here.

Remember, this thread is about the who will take over at Dior. The discussion on the allegations at John Galliano and anything regarding his personal future should stay in that particular thread. You can find the thread here:

alaia would be greaat...
though he's too much of an individualist to toe the corporate line...

what about the proenza schouler boys...?

they have proven then can do high end + accessories...
and i can only imaginge that they could use the extra salary to put back into their own company...
*could be like a marc jabobs situation...
i don't know...but i could see that happening...

++++and we KNOW that anna is a huge fan of them...so there's that as well...

^^ no way! Raf Simons' design couldn't fit Dior at all. or Pedro Lourenço is an even better option in the minimalism area.

^I completely agree except for one thing; the economy is fastly changing with more dependance on the East and financial crisis in the West. And LVMH has already proven it can be ruthless, right now it's all about the money and saying afloat. Im praying for a dark horse and and a vision like you theorized but Im afraid strategicly it would make much more sense for them to move a player up, one that has proven to wow the crow. Alber, Marc or Tisci.

I still light my candle for Thyskens.

Oh and you're so right about them already having planned a replacement. They were waiting for this opportunity.

Hum .. the Proenza guys seem like a good choice too ..

You what would I just LOVE? A completely unknown-dark designer to take the reigns and to make everyone's jaws drop ...

PS But if we are dreaming .. why not Herchcovitch?

^ that would be awesome. i feel like his talent is kinda wasted right now on his featured theory collection. just my opinion of course (i actually love his theory collection, but come on...)

Alessandra Facchinetti is an interesting choice. After failing at Gucci and Valentino, Dior seems like it could be a good fit for her if LVMH wanted to steer it away from Galliano. However, it is unlikely.

Tisci, Theyskens and Alber should rightfully remain where they're at. Why would Alber want to move to Dior anyway? I would think being successful at Lanvin would be more satisfying than picking up the hot mess left at Dior. Plus I would think he be eyeing Chanel instead.... well, at least that's my opinion anyway.

I'm just glad there will be a change at Dior, I was getting a little frustrated with the way it was being handled by Galliano, or lack of that is.
