Although Prince William can be confident of the devotion of Kate Middleton, he could be forgiven for casting a suspicious eye in the direction of the dashing young man with whom his girlfriend was photographed leaving the Boujis nightclub in South Kensington this week.

Mandrake can disclose that the "mystery man" is Willem Marx, who was her boyfriend at Marlborough College. "He was her first love," claims one of his chums.

Kate is not the only attractive brunette to have been squired by Marx, an Oxford graduate who works for the American television channel ABC News.

He also romanced the Lancôme model Elettra Rossellini, a granddaughter of Ingrid Bergman.

While the prince made a flying visit to Afghanistan this week, Marx spent far longer in Iraq for the Lincoln Group, an American PR firm.
In a magazine article, he boasted that when he explained to one "raven-haired beauty" in a restaurant in Edinburgh the importance of his trip to Baghdad, she whispered: "That's very sexy."
