Christian Dior Haute Couture S/S 2013 Paris

There is very strong pressure on Raf, I feel this collection is so forced, has clear elements of Raf but for me Galliano's minimalist, it's sad. I'm a little disappointed.

I mean new in the work Raf has done so far for the brand, referencing shapes in the archive of the house he is lead designer for is expected and allowed, i dont see it as a negative

I guarantee you the three trapeze dresses are the exact same except in color as dresses from the Spring 1958 show. I found most of this to be even less wearable than Galliano's.

I won't judge until I've seen every look and the whole collection. But that shot looks beautiful though. He's getting there. Really pumps up the setting.

Yes, and I really love the idea of gowns "blossoming in the garden" so springy!

He's got lots of personnes talentueuses behind him, I can't handle it! It feels like I'm seeing the same thing over and over again, C'mon dresses with pants/socks? Since when is that chic?

This verse comes to my mind...

'Et passe, passe, passe, passe, passe, passe les jours, et rien non rien, rien ne change sur le parcourt. Ce sont les mêmes pages qui défilent, les mêmes vers qu'on récite, le même vieux film que depuis 100 fois on rembobine'

I can go into Galliano's work and say the same thing, I could go in Balenciaga's archives and say the same for Nicholas's work, these people are working with a legacy this is not mimicry its reference so that point is invalid, and I can understand dislike for Raf's design, preference is preference but to call this less wearable than Galliano is absolute folly

I didn't watch the livestream, but based on the pictures on Twitter (Cathy Horyn, Alexandra Shulman & Vogue fr) it looked like an amazing show. Like most people are saying, I won't judge until I see them up close. Sometimes Raf's clothes look boring on the surface but are exquisite in detail and shape. He doesn't exactly give the visual assault that Galliano offered.

Just like last seasonb the setting manages to upstage the clothes

It's like any other collection, there were bits I liked and bits I didn't, the one thing I did like that was continuous throughout the collection was that as the collection progressed it went from Day To Night, there was one dress that was bright yellow with a nude slit on her thigh was one of the highlights for me and I love that his Dior woman wears trousers and not just dresses and skirts which is what a lot of designers neglect to design in a lot of their collections.

I really did love the latter part of the collection with those embellished white dresses too.

We are definitely getting a history lesson in the real aesthetic of Christian Dior from Raf's collections.

Galliano's Couture was all about the shock value, whereas I believe Raf's Couture to be all about wearability for the customer, because at the end of the day that is who he's pleasing ultimately, as well as the big wigs at LVMH.

I am curious what his sales figures will be like this year... since his spring RTW collection should be hitting stores around now.

I watched the live stream and I'll be honest and say it's really not as good as his first couture collection.

The positive thing is that you can tell he's establishing "his" Dior look by re-using references we have seen in his previous collections. There were a couple of nice looks, including the suits and those egg-shaped dresses. My favorite dress was a beautiful yellow one. Can't wait for HQs of it.

But then, there are some looks that were really disappointing. The first few looks were terrible, the colored thighs were definitely not a good choice nor flattering, and I have to mention those little flowers he uses. He should just stop with these because they look like those plastic flowers you find on graves -- they do not look good and tend to cheapen the looks. I should also say that the hair and makeup were positively awful...

The last few gowns helped bringing up the collection. I remember that beautiful white coat and I did like those little hats/helmets.

Overrall a very forgettable collection. Better luck next time

I actually loved it. It's an improvement from his first Couture collection which I thought was a bit disappointing, but here he really focused on the details and even if it doesn't look eccentric it still looks luxuroius and couture. I'm a bit tired to see those black suits every seasons though...

So...

Which one of the dresses is Jennifer Lawrence going to have the misfortune of being contractually obligated to wear to the Oscars? :ninja:

On a positive note, the music was nice and Alexandre de Betak did a good job with the set. :innocent:

By the way, did anyone else happen to notice a bit of Theyskens' Rochas in this...? Someone needs to alert Raf to the fact that many before him have already danced circles around what he tries to pass off as couture, in ready-to-wear alone (not to incite that never-ending 'what is couture' debate).

He certainly does not need to put on a spectacle for me to appreciate his work, but these haphazard romanticized collections are getting old...fast.

I like what I've seen so far-- it's not like Galliano when his Dior collections were breathtaking but it IS rather pretty all the same. I think we're all looking for Dior to be as good as it once was. It may never happen so we have to just appreciate this collection as being entirely separate.

It's really nice and I think it was more of a statement that yes he can do "extravagant gowns" ect. I loved the last couture alot more though...

I still think Raf is a perfect fit for Dior and I think this was his best collection yet. The only thing about his collections that gets stale to me is hearing the same people whine that it's "nothing new". :innocent:

This collection was pure poetry. Amazing embroidery, attention to detail and flawless proportions. Raf is truly magnificent.

From all the pictures I've seen so far, I'm personally hoping for that yellow gown, I think it would suit Jennifer the best out of this collection.

I haven't seen all the images yet but a lot of the looks seem very pretty. Maybe not as crazy and original as Galliano but perhaps thats for the best. They are very different designers. It seems like Raf is working on making his Dior HC more luxurious and wearable, they are probably hoping to have more buyers, and for now that might just be the direction the house needs to head in.
