How do we know what's the whole schedule Gucci has planned? The group has announcement, and it didn't say it's Michele's design, but Frida's.
That's great and all but how do those adjectives relate to the brand Gucci? (Which I think is the main complaint in this thread. )
Brand identity is key in this business.
We had a long debate about this after the Menswear show. Gucci is an Italian luxury/leather goods house. Being "sexy" was Tom Ford's doing and Frida's bandwagon, and as sales and critics tell, it was getting quite boring and dated. Kering obviously saw that it was time for a new approach, and that's what they're doing. And as Slimane's Saint Laurent taught us, a brand facelift can pay off really well. Maybe Gucci's old costumers won't buy into this new era, but it will also attract new costumers. But most importantly, it will give new excitment to the brand, something that was desperately needed.
Regarding this Frida/Alessandro thing, notice how the Gucci statement says "will be fully immersed in the Spring/Summer collections to be presented in September." It means that come September Alessandro will take total control over the collections, but that doesn't mean this isn't his design. They probably used most of the already ordered fabrics under Frida and some already constructed pieces, but I believe the design is 90% Michele.
I read the discussion, I understand the rationale and the economical payback this might probably accomplish. That is not my point. Glad you acknowledge the luxury/leather heritage because I see no genetical connection with generations of luxury products. As you might have noticed I did not use the adjective 'sexy' and Im not worshiping at the Ford altar either. I still feel it's brand betrayal may it be lucrative or not. I do not object a new direction or a fresh start whatsoever. But there is long term vision and there is short term dolla dolla me love you long time. But whatever more power to Kering, good for him.
where? Can i see that announcement?
I don't understand what you mean with "brand betrayal"? Sure it's a slightly different look, but it's not not something so utterly different from what one would expect to find at a Gucci store.
The Asian market....I think if Gucci wanted a change in direction, if let say the sexed up femme fatale of Tom Ford days no longer works, then it should be something impressive as well. Say what you like about Saint Laurent, Hedi's clothes at least caters very clearly to a particular idea. I dont actually quite get where Michele is going with this. So who is is his Gucci woman? If she is not sexy anymore than what is she? From the casting I assume they want to tap into a much younger market, but is this what the younger market want to wear? I dont know man, regardless of concept, covetable clothes or style, regardless of how weird or cheap or trashy, is to me kind of instantly obvious. Maybe its the styling that's muddling everything but I seriously dont see anything here that will inspire the younger generation to run to the stores or imitate or create #ootd outfit post inspiration on social media.
