Lanvin sends out sumptuous collection of looks worthy of contemporary Nefertiti
By Jenny Barchfield (CP) – 7 hours ago
PARIS, France — Nefertiti lived again Friday at Lanvin, where designer Alber Elbaz served up sensual contemporary variations on the Egyptian queen.
Models in blunt cut wigs of black hair and adorned with chunky necklaces and cuffs of metal-studded wood and darkly shining feathers sported jackets with oversized shoulders that stood out from the body at 90-degree angles, and slim cocktail dresses in finely draped jersey or gold lame.
Though the fall-winter 2010-2011 ready-to-wear collection was starker than in seasons past, it felt spot on.
Elbaz, who has returned the formerly flailing house into a label coveted by women the world over, has an uncanny sense of what women want and he once again succeeded in delivering the goods.
The looks, mostly in a sombre palette of black, charcoal and navy, went seamlessly from dangerous day to sultry night. There were black power suits with sculptural shoulders and nipped waists and asymmetrical silk sheath dresses with rhinestone-studded zippers running down the back. They would slay in the boardroom and the nightclub. Cocoon coats were perfect, with glinting studded leather belts.
"I love women and I'm inspired by women and what they want," the genial Israeli-born designer told a scrum of reporters backstage. "The biggest joy for me is to see the dress I designed on the street on real women. That's when the surreal becomes real."
And the biggest joy for Elbaz' legions of fervent female fans is to wear his surreally beautiful creations - fit for a modern-day queen of the Nile.

Apparently his muse was a contemporary Egyptian queen , it makes sense now with the gold draping and African jewelry pieces . Its quite pretty.

I want it all!

I absolutely love the hair too. I might have to visit the hairdresser soon, since it's growing on me.

I can imagine Cleopatra and Nefertiti being into clothes like this. Clothes that are edgy but still feminine.

This comes through viewing the clothes. There's beauty and confidence in it.

...and everybody's gonna want those shoes.

jamie brochet is the perfect chick to wear lanvin

I love that the dresses are less flowy than his last few seasons. Not too big a fan of the heavily embellished pieces though.

I've been indifferent to Lanvin for the past couple of seasons, but this is absolutely divine

wow. i love how even without the embellishments the pieces are so strong and then with the end he just threw everything together but as always its so well placed together. love.

The nude-colored gauzy draped mini-dress literally made me gasp. Ridiculously beautiful. And the shoes....oh, the shoes!

Everything was brilliant. I loved the way the overhead lighting sculpted the models' faces...all those fierce cheekbones! And, of course, the wigs. Makes me want to go out for a dye job and a chop-chop!

I like this ... but it's easy to think of Lanvin collections I've liked more. The jackets and coats seem especially strong. I really like the red coat ... I expect some of these would look better on real women than on the models. I think that (and the fact they are prototypes) is what seems 'off' in a few cases.

My least favorite part is the excessive fuzz, feathers, and fur. Between that and the shoes, I'm expecting Lauren Santo Domingo to become a sudden convert ...

I like the wigs, and my favorite part is that one model isn't wearing one ...

I'm always a sucker for his raw/chic details on those cocktail dresses.! The feather fringe, intricate beading, crumpled textures, and super sculptural coats never cease to amaze me.

The only stimulating part of this collection is the seaming and the construction of the coats and the jackets; everything else was utterly terrible.

The monkey/goat hair and all the other fur components were hideous. And those last looks with their explosions of fur/sequins/embroidery were likewise terrible.

For me with these recent collections of Lanvin, I feel a sense of trying-too-hard-to-impress. It's just too much sequins, too much embroidery, too much everything really. What happened to the elegant simplicity of his earlier collections? They were brilliant because they were fashion but they were also largely minimal. The theatrics were toned down and the clothes were simple.

These last few shows of his have been far too fashion victim for my taste, with all their ostentatiousness, which is a shame because Alber is such a master of quiet luxury.
