UK Vogue April 2023 : Jill, Precious & Paloma by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin

No budget?! Rihanna must be one of the most expensive pop star. How the hell they put her last month?! I'm curious. Hiring her must be more expensive than Meisel.

I love it so much, Edward is brilliant. I don't know why I+V's work has seemed increasingly murky in light + contrast since oh.. 2010..

Execution is really corny and the mood is a bit dreary with that back drop. Jill still hasn't fully learnt how to emote her face in images, and frankly I don't get why she's in this. Could have had Tess McMillan or someone else who knows what to do with their face.

The styling needs to be more joyful. It doesn't really celebrate much about them as cover models, plus it ends being a bit hypocritical. When designers or stylists don't know what to do with a plus/larger sized model, a super stretchy jersey tube dress is always the go to so this is a let down. Surprising as well with GKJ styling this.

A group shoot that didn’t even connect, it’s like 3 divas who were forced to take a photo together. It’s just that bad

I saw this cover on Insta and said, "Wow!"

"Wow....this is bad"

Where's the styling? The set design? The story? The effort?

I'll say that apart from his first, which also include Rihanna's, and the "political grandstanding" covers that EE has done whilst at BV, most aren't memorable.
As there's not one I that can recall, with affection, excitement or sentimentality.

But then, does any of this matter (anymore) when you have an unquestioning diversity coterie a keyboard-click away ready to eat it all up?

another b*tch kanye made famous
Hahaha, the B word. We discussed a lot about it in the March thread. I blame Kanye for The Kardashians (even I tolerate more Kim and Kendall, not the rest) and Demna. Def he introduced these people and change something in fashion industry. Not for good as I'm seeing. He was close to Anna, so he had huge influence back then.

Generally, celebrities are never paid for covers -- magazines would have been broke a long time ago if that was the case! They do it to promote projects (film, tv show, album) as part of their "job," like a press junket. (Things they would be paid for are The Met gala, for example, if the celebrity -- like Rihanna -- is performing.)

Maybe she wasn’t paid directly but an Annie location shoot doesn’t come cheap. Add to that Annie’s post production budget.

These 3 are not the new supers- even a layperson like myself knows that

Correct, the photo budget for photographers like Annie, Meisel, etc. is the largest expense for shoots like this (but I believe their rate would be the same whether it was Rihanna, Kendall, or whatever). Interestingly, even these photo budgets are being slashed -- there was a NYT profile on Steven Klein last year that was fascinating, as he claimed that Vogue had recently asked him to take a significant rate cut (or even do something for free, if I remember correctly). Bleak times!

But Annie didn't made the Rihanna story. It was I&V like this current issue. I thought the low budget also can explain the unexpected cover stars from American Vogue, but didn't knew stars do these covers for free.

All the covers are fine (except the group one), but the background is too dark for spring.

One of the greatest models of all time, Guinevere van Seenus, praised the main cover on IG!!!

Yeah, they kinda big enough to be cheap. M&M too. There so many new names. Maybe they are lower.

Actually, as I know most photographers work for free when it comes to editorial works, and I think most of photographers even pay really a lot when they are working editorial works. At least, Vogue would cover the expenses for the shooting. I think Meisel and Annie would be paid when they work with Vogue, but it would be really really small compared to their commercial works.

Finally a good Vogue Uk cover and decent Gabriella's styling, it was about time.

Arrived back home from a long weekend to find this had been delivered.

Feels like a decently thick issue. That's one thing I've always enjoyed about British Vogue; even though there's not a huge variation in page count month-to-month, it means "smaller" issues in the year still feel substantial enough in your hands that you don't get the impression you've been conned out of your money. At least until you open it that is...

As for the contents of this particular issue, I haven't had a chance to give it a good look yet, so I can't make the call on the quality, but from a very brief flick through I saw shots of Irina, Karen Elson and Anna Ewers.

The Vogue logo is done in a silver/grey ink, so unfortunately it isn't foil and, despite the metallic sheen, it's really hard to see amongst the gloom of the backdrop. I got the group shot, which I loathe. All put together I really wonder how this will fair on the newsstand. Not that they bother about that anymore - it's almost as if every element of this cover (right down to the ink finishes) are screaming THIS IS JUST FOR SOCIAL MEDIA CLOUT. Who cares if the magazine's name can barely be seen in person?

I'll do a proper review soon, unless someone beats me to it!

Plus all the usual shopping, travel and beauty pages, including a big 'Skincare Special' section. And then all the regular features. There's one page on a Paolo Roversi shoot from 1984, written by Robin Muir. Which, despite only being 5 paragraphs and a couple of small shots, is the most interesting thing to me about this issue!
