UK Vogue June 2016 : The Duchess of Cambridge by Josh Olins

I like it, but only because it could have been so much worse.

A terrible role model for young women? Really? I know we're all entitled to our own opinions but if I rolled my eyes any harder at your comments I'd do myself an injury.

Go ahead nobody is stopping you. We all have our own standards

all this talk about her being a cultural force and role model made me realize that I don´t know anything about her... is she involved with charities? what does she do exactly?

boring cover and yes i agree it looks like Vogue Paris by Testino which isn't cute at all. I'm just waiting to see what the content looks like.

not much if you really wanna know:P this cover just proves how boring she is

It's a great achievement for the magazine, and I'm all for any development that keeps people talking about print media, but personally speaking, I have zero interest in the 'Cowboy Kate' cover shot.

I think she looks fine, especially when dressed casually, but the status of the person is what's momentous about these images, not the images themselves. But for someone of that social calibre to be shot for a fashion magazine, keeping it as bland as possible is probably the only way to avoid excessive criticism, and going for a country look might be the best way to avoid comparisons with Diana.

She might not be a bad role model, but she's not a good one either.

This cover by Mario Testino It would have been better

^I think that Testino shooting this cover/editorial would have been a disservice to Kate, because of the comparisons that would have been inevitable... those iconic Lady Di pics were taken when both were at their peaks, weren´t they? imo Testino has lost his charm and Kate -at this point at least- can´t compare to Diana.

A June cover? Why is it so dark? She looks like she's on safari, I don't see what's British about it.
The eyebrows and hair are too heavy giving masucline apprearance. She could pass for James bay with that hat.
I agree with some commenters, she is a terrible role model for young girls.

Couldn't we say this about basically anyone who appears on the cover of Vogue? I don't hear people bitching and moaning about Kate Moss being a good role model when she's on the cover of Vogue.

I guess they were probably going for a throwback to the good old days of British Colonialism! Scramble for Africa realness?

Please! It was made very clear last year that Wintour employed Testino and his connections to secure her for the September 15 cover. Kate is really more than just a Windsor royal tbh, she's a force in both the fashion and cultural spectrum. As such she's immensely sought after.

I think we agree, I just had a slightly different point. My post was not a dismissal of Catherine's pull as a public figure. I just don't think a) Her UK Vogue cover appearance is that surprising because of precedence, b) that it will lead to other covers, regardless of clamour. Anne may go a-begging but I don't see it happening save for desperate circumstances. Sorry if I got my wires crossed.

The Windsors were always a major cultural (if not fashionable) force because of the mark left by the British empire. Catherine's in a similar position only because she's a Windsor Royal in the wake of Diana. I don't mind her at all but no one would care otherwise.

What I wouldn't give if we had more intriguing content to look forward to, Uk Vogue...?

Edit: "Scramble for Africa realness". LOLOLOL. Lawks. Idk, some are saying it's a very Sloane Ranger-y?

Kate is a pretty woman, but this cover is so dull, and lifeless. I'm sure the interview inside is just as canned.

There is nothing special about her, beyond her status as a royal in Britain. Rich girl waits years and years to marry a Prince. Marries the Prince. Gives birth to an heir, and a spare, then spends the rest of her life, carrying out "royal duties", while constantly putting on a smiles for the public. She has to be careful of everything she says, does, or wears, or the british public might get upset. By the time she becomes Queen, she'll be an even more dull middle aged woman.

Or she might pull a Diana, and get interesting.

This. I'm sorry but we have all sorts of people on the cover, people who get away with never been called 'terrible role models', Kate Moss is a prime example here but she's by no means alone. She became yet more successful and landed more covers after she was caught using drugs. So if we're going to go on about setting a bad example for young girls why don't we start elsewhere?

And by ways of inspiration, I believe there was supposed to be a reference to Ali McGraw more than anything. I don't think it's been designed to reference any sort of colonialism..

How is Kate, the Dutchess, a bad role model and Kate Moss a good role model? I think I like this cover mainly because she looks lovely and more importantly, I am relieved that it is not one of the Rosmary's children aka Kardashian/Jenners...

I agree with some commenters, she is a terrible role model for young girls.

She isn't any worse than the Kardashians, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Rita Ora, Paris Hilton though.
I'd rather have a classy lady who might be a bit lazy and privileged than a woman who appears half naked (or naked) in the media, going from man to man and from party to party.

Royals will always be critized for being born with a silver spoon in their mouths but at least their cultural influence is much less harmful than the attention-wh*ring "singers" and reality tv-stars.

The fact that this is coming from a woman is just sad.

Care to elaborate before calling me sad?

You might have misunderstood me though. I didn't say I want to be in either position but if I had to choose than i'd rather be a royal than an attention-seeker. And I bet Kate works harder than the average Kardashian...
Royals will be critized for everything they do while (most) entertainers can do whatever they want. I bet you and I have no idea how that must feel.

all this talk about her being a cultural force and role model made me realize that I don´t know anything about her... is she involved with charities? what does she do exactly?

A simple Google search will list all the charities she's involved with, and official visits she attends. I think it's very important that we grasp the situation she's in. She's not in the same position as Madonna or Rihanna who can pubicly air their opinions on anything at any given time, however contradicting. She's a representative of an institution, and to some extent, a country. And when you factor the whole Diana media circus, who wouldn't blame her for maintaining an almost nondescript personality and set of opinions?

And I too agree with Blue Orchid (shocker!) regarding the blatant cherry-picking at play here. I don't even think her peers (Charlene of Monaco and Letitzia of Spain) are faced with such fierce detractors. People (I'm sorry, but this is much more common in women than men) are so obsessed with this idea of rolemodels. Somehow the idea that she went into being Duchess and motherhood with her eyes open seems so deplorable. Because nobody believes a woman can think for herself? Surely that should be the very first criteria for rolemodels: the absolute freedom to make your own decisions and live by them.
