US Vogue September 2017 : Jennifer Lawrence by Annie Leibovitz

More importantly, why are Kendall and Gigi listed as supermodels and Iman is up there with the various celebrities?

It's US Vogue, mate, they always promote the hell out of the two (like there are no other models out there, seriously, aside Bella that is). They have this kind of favoritism towards the two based on the fact that their social media posts and certain stories often involve any of these models.

Other than that, not a bad cover, and the shoots are good. Seems like US Vogue loves J-Law so much.

Yes to all of this. Nicole would have nailed every of these covers.

She sure would have, this concept was perfect for Nicole because she is genuinely a muse for many in the fashion industry. I'm glad they've been more ambitious than the usual bland fare, but i almost feel we're so used to the mediocrity that something even mildly inventive seems amazing.

My favourite is by far the cover by Inez & Vinoodh, just love how simple and effortless it is with the shimmering Versace dress and Jennifer's slicked back hair. At first, I thought it was by Mert & Marcus (since it reminded me of Kendall Jenner's September cover last year). My second favourite is the one by Annie Leibovitz (purely because it feels more celebratory for the occasion), and I could've done without the other two.

Why?! It's enough to have that photoshop monstrosity Annie dares to call a photograph. Why do we need Meisel or Testino? To do lesser versions of their past hits? Pass.

The painting cover is the best, although she does look like she came out of Whoville. I&V should know better than to sell their souls to this magazine...it sucks the creativity out of any photographer. I like the Weber one despite me not being a fan of his work.

Whoville!

Look, I suppose I have a very antiquated way of how magazines should celebrate their 125th anniversary. It's one of those rare opportunities to look back instead of ahead for a change. Many of the photographers who contributed to this magazine's aesthetic are no longer alive. Imo Meisel and Testino has done way, way more for US Vogue than Weber & I&V. I'd even throw Steven Klein in there just because. People can sing Weber's praises and call his work 'consistent' until the stars come down, it simply won't help the fact that he's not worthy of this. What he's actually doing is merely regurgitating the same contrived hippie nonsense over and over again.

And speaking of regurgitating, here is the Carolyn Besette cover I referenced to earlier. I would say Jennifer's Vogue cover is the 'lesser' version of the one below.....

Why didn't Anna put herself on the cover: the queen of Vogue.

After 2 years without a decent September cover all this it feels fresh for Vogue US. I love Jennifer and all the 4 covers are great. I wanna have in my hands all the 4 editions.

I only like Annie's & I&V's. Guess I'm bound to get Annie's since I hate to have 3 consecutive gray background September issues. I wish they used a shot where she's looking straight on the cover.

I agree with benn though. Regardless of how we all feel about Mario, he should've been given the opportunity to shoot the cover. Deny it or not, he is one of the components of this magazine. A Mario cover feels like home (as tragic as that may sound). He is one of the few that can perfectly reflect the image of this magazine (regardless of the outcome). So I agree that he should have been part of this.

My main issue is how this doesn't look celebratory at all. It looks incohesive. Very much like an afterthought from them. I hate how all covers look so distinct from each other. And also I hate the fact that if you take out the text, no one would get that they're celebrating the anniversary. The latter, imo, is the true test of a perfect anniversary cover.

Take for example Gaga's 120 cover. Take the text out, it looks retrospective. Out of the ordinary. Put it beside this, this is nothing.

Amber should have been on the cover. Those shots are gorgeous

American Vogue is the original Vogue, the oldest Vogue, the mother of all the Vogues. It's also the most boring, uninspired, and tired Vogue. The same recycled actresses, pop stars, and instagram models, month after month. I'm almost never surprised by who gets a Vogue cover. She must be doing something right tho, because when I come here people are always hyping the same models, actresses and pop stars as Anna.

Vogue needs some new blood fast.

Annie should take some time off to take a PHOTOSHOP class! jesus, the retouching in her works has been so terrible lately.

Homeward Bound

We’ve seen their faces stretched across shiny billboards and peppered throughout the glossy pages of fashion magazines and lookbooks, but today’s top models weren’t born into their jet-setting, international-runway lifestyles. So seven of our favorite all-American models are taking us on a journey back to their roots—from the mountains and prairies of Colorado to the free-spirited swamps of Louisiana. Follow along as Taylor Hill recalls her summers hiking and winters snowboarding; Karlie Kloss visits her humble, family-oriented Missouri; and Amber Valletta returns to her grandparents’ Oklahoma farm. “Home is where the heart is,” Valletta declares. We couldn’t agree more.

Homeward Bound is truly stunning. The serenity of the softness of the photography works perfectly for this kind of story. The shot of Selena Forrest is one of my favorites of the year of any magazine.

Homeward bound looks like a poor man's Liobowitz..

I'm a bit late, but I agree with all of you: beautiful concept, wrong cover model choice... If they wanted to go for a celebrity, Nicole would have been perfect and iconic. If they wanted to go for models, they could have called the American Supermodels Amber, Carolyn etc and give a cover to each. But as we have seen these last months, they are so into youth for their cover model choices! (Gigi, Zendaya, Selena, Elle and so on) so I guess they chose Jennifer also for that.

The editorial posted with the American models is very nice, I especially love Amber, Carolyn and Selena shots.

As reported in the cover rumour thread, Chelsea Manning's feature is in this issue and she was shot by Leibovitz as rumoured. There's also a feature on Supreme's James Jebbia - odd choice, but anyway. Sounds like a great issue.

Also Breitbart have their knickers in a twist over the cover being too 'political' because of the Statue of Liberty.
