Valentino Haute Couture S/S 2010 Paris

My gosh, I don't think I've ever seen so much ugliness in a runway collection. I like the makeup, but that's about it.

Those shoes sort of remind me of concubine foot-binding...

Some of the models look like colorful mummies.

And yes, ninja turtles. Whoopee.

Blinding: the Garden of Eden theme saw ribbon blindfolds, chiffon tunics and diaphanous shapes

Valentino creates a vision of Eden in his Paris haute couture show
Laura Craik, Fashion Editor

Is it a wood nymph, or a notorious London socialite? Alice Dellal made a surprise catwalk appearance at the Valentino haute couture show in Paris in flesh-coloured ankle boots and a drape-fronted chiffon dress.

It was refreshing to see a girl with a more athletic form — and half shaven head — join the ranks. But the question is: what was she doing there?

Of all the couture houses, Valentino is arguably the most traditional. When Valentino Garavani retired in 2007, Alessandra Facchinetti lasted only a year before being unceremoniously fired, allegedly for departing too much from his predecessor's classic vision.

If this is true, heaven only knows what the great Valentino will think of this collection spawned in his name.

Ruched chiffon leggings? A jacket with patent leather panels and a spiky, geometric collar? These were as far removed from old-school Valentino — he who dressed Jackie Onassis — as is possible.

Yet current designers, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, worked under Valentino and were given the reins with his approval. While couture has to be made relevant to a new, young audience, at times the clothes looked more like the work of an avant garde designer at London Fashion Week.

^what a critic !

nothing is said, but pretty much everything when you've seen the collection.

Despite loathing the entire show, I tried to find at least some pieces, instead of looks, that I liked. But, apart from maybe two simple dresses, everything is just ugly! And not in a it's-prada/balenciaga-kinda-ugly-so-it's-cool-anyways, just plain old u.g.l.y.

There are some really great ideas in this collection that aren't being utilized to their full potential. The collection isn't a total bust but they haven't proven to me yet that they are really up to the challenge of taking over Valentino. I had faith in them after their spring 2010 rtw, fall couture, and pre-fall showings. This is a step back but Valentino wasn't much better. I see 60's and 70s Valentino in this collection. However, Valentino showed the same almost overly frilly suits and typical socialite gowns season after season and everyone complained. You could always count on a Valentino thread being full of comments about how his clientelle was about to die out and how he needed to court a younger clientelle. Now that these designers are doing that, everyone thinks they need to be fired.

my first question: what happened to valentinoo??

my second question: who's going to buy this? hc relies a lot in client fidelity an brand/designer status... I have many thoughts around this question but rght now don't have the time to explain it here carefully! my apologies, but I wanted to drop the question (without having read what was written here before...)

Valentino, Ungaro's knocking on your door. he wants to welcome you to the pits.

oh, man. you've all already said it. i'm just SO CONFUSED!!!

although i do like the ribbons, on heads and shoes. but seriously. WHAT. IS. THIS.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHA.

I was reluctant to view this thread after JPG because I thought it would be a snore. Boy, was I wrong.

I like older Valentino, I have one of his 60s period dresses. The Valentino I grew up with was never to my taste, reminded me of wedding cakes for some reason, too ornate and frothy, but something always kept me intrigued enough to keep up with his shows and walk through a store or two. Then Allessandra took over and her last two connections got me so excited about buying Valentino again. Fun, romantic, womanly, exquisite design.

Then they dumped her and hired the bag and shoe makers .

I stopped paying attention after S/S 09 HC aka the "Party like it's Prom 00!" collection. I went back to look at the latest RTW because so many persons here referred to it warmly, but I couldn't go through the whole thing, it was making me comatose. Very floaty, very floaty, very cohesive but for whatever reason not capturing my imagination. But at least it wasn't Seventeen Magazine Prom looks so I was happy, in that respect.

I appreciate Helmut's take on this, trying to be reasonable. I don't remember much of these looks from 70s Valentino but I'll be sure to take a look and see for myself. It's not so much that I think Ungaro or C Kane invented the looks the new Valentino house seem to be inspired by but it does seem to be sourced from Ungaro and Kane's interpretations of them. It makes great comedy but I don't see...I don't...these looks are done just as well in much lower price ranges.

WHAT. IS. THIS.

What's this? There's batsh*t colours everywhere.
What's this? There's wacked out ribbons in the air.
What's this? I can't believe I'm eyes, I must be dreaming, wake up Clocked this isn't fair!

WHAT. IS. THIS.

God, I dunno, could Tim Burton make a movie out of all this Valentino house drama lately? Johnny Depp as Valentino?

(Sorry if i double post. Could not resist.)

LINDSAY LOHAN FOR VALENTINO NOW! :ermm:

In any case, the fact that it's aroused 17+ pages of "love" from this forum means they have created a storm. PR is never bad however you look at it. They will find their new customer regardless. Facchinetti was a pioneer but the house needs new clients not cadavers. It will have made the next designer's work that much easier. Schisms always come at a price.
Does Balenciaga, Givenchy, Dior, or even Chanel look like it was "meant" to? NO
There are elements that are as ugly as they are beautiful (the embroideries).
I believe they may have gone overboard in chasing the same clientele as Balenciaga but the interpretation is not at all the same as it is much more soft.

Let me get to the point:
Couture houses like this in France are revenued on accessories and perfumes. They were and are accessory designers. That is what really matters and what most, if anyone can afford.
This is couture that NO ONE BUYS. It's nothing but a glorified art installation and means nothing to anyone because it's intangible and superfluous and there will always be another burning at the stake next season to whet the appetites of the general proletariat.
If I may paraphrase that lord of taste, Jeremy Scott, "Vive la revolution!" Baby.

The funny thing about this whole issue is that Alessandra was fired because her fashion views were way too different from the usual Valentino aesthetic!
I wonder what Valentino himself would think about this collection

THANK YOU!
I am also getting annoyed at everyone screaming THIS IS NOT VALENTINO yadda yadda yadda. Constantly season after season I would read people giving Valentino flack for creating boring frilly collections over and over again yet now here everyone comes screaming how the house is destroyed. I think the whole reaction to the collection is a classic case of the pretentious mentality of people who like fashion. One minute you dislike or not care for a brand then when it changes everyone screams the house is dead.

Puh-lease. Valentino hasn't been a great fashion forward brand in YEARS so why is it dead now? No one seemed to care about it when Valentino himself was designing a few years back but now OH GOD its dead.

I can see people getting upset of post-Tom Ford Gucci and Galliano's current messes at Dior but Valentino? One of the most boring, safe, old & often tacky brands (90's-00's)?

Alessandra this, and Alessandra that.
None of you knows what went on behind-the-scenes.
For all you know, Alessandra was probably fired because she was a real b**** to work with.
And if that's really the case, then I hope that the firing taught her some humility...

If it takes being a b*tch to produce a great collection then...:innocent:

If you watched the Valentino documentary, you'll know that Monsieur Valentino wasn't exactly an easy person to work with either.

^Only thing is, it ain't her label.
Until the day you see "Alessandra Facchinetti Haute Couture", she's only as good as her last collection...for someone else's line.

Uhm ... Chanel is not Karl's nor was Gucci Tom's, but you can believe they were real demanding and they turn out amazing collection. I heard Hedi was demanding as well . If you believe in your ideas and aesthetic, you have to fight for it and make others believe . So no, I don't fault Alessandra for being difficult to work with as the result was some amazing collections in her (wrongfully) short career at Valentino !

Well what the hell do YOU know about the situation that you would say something as vindictive and mean-spirited as this? I HIGHLY doubt your post has even a microscopic amount of truth in it, and yet you feel you can proclaim judgements on her character? Shame on you!

ETA: I guess I shouldn't bother, you seem to have a vendetta against Alessandra which is bizarre and unjustified.
