Versace for H&M

We did! :D Which is also the reason I think this will appeal to a larger demographic than the Lanvin collection did - honestly it didn't fly off the shelves in my town...

there were good initial sales, but lots of returns too. especially the red and black tulle dresses were still hanging around until after Christmas.

Somehow I find Versace would've been more appropriate for a summer collection. The pieces look OK so far although I'm no Versace fan.

This will do quite well I think, Versace is a big name for H+M to have signed on.

H&M Announces Versace Collection

Wall Street Journal (wsj.com)
Hennes & Mauritz AB announced an Autumn collaboration with Versace, which the cheap chic retailer hopes will boost its profile on the investor catwalk.

The Swedish fashion giant, which last week disappointed the market with a lower than expected rise in second quarter sales, said Tuesday the Donatella Versace-designed collection will hit its stores in November, giving sales a much-needed boost ahead of the key Christmas period.

The collection, which is the latest in a line of designer partnerships for the high street clothing chain, will likely give sales a short, sharp boost in November, but the long-term impact will be minimal given such collections tend to be limited and sell out in a matter of days.

The main benefit however will be the boost to the company's image as it has been struggling in recent months to persuade consumers to part with their cash, despite maintaining low prices at the expense of margins as raw material costs have spiraled.

Weaker-than-expected second quarter sales last week raised concerns that lower sales combined with higher cotton costs will hit gross margins hard, and the company's share price has fallen nearly 9% in the last month.

"Versace is one of the most important brands of recent times, and their collection for H&M will be glamorous and flamboyant—everything Versace stands for," said Margareta van den Bosch, creative adviser at H&M.

The Stockholm-based company said the collection will include ranges for women, men and selected pieces for the home. In addition, Donatella Versace has designed a pre-spring collection for H&M which will be exclusively available in countries with H&M online sales from Jan. 19, 2012.

H&M started its designer collections with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004 and collaborations since have included Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Comme des Garçons, Jimmy Choo and, most recently, Lanvin.

Société Générale analyst Anne Critchlow said all those collections had been a success, although to varying degrees, and she expects the latest collaboration to make a significant media splash.

"Stella McCartney in 2005 and Roberto Cavalli in 2007 got a lot of media attention. And Jimmy Choo in 2009 was probably the most successful, with certain lines of the collection selling out in a single day." By comparison, collaborations with Lanvin in 2010, Comme des Garçons in 2008, and Viktor & Rolf in 2006, were "quieter affairs."

Ms. Critchlow warned however that although H&M's collaboration will garner a lot of media attention, it will not move the company's share price to any great extent, as concerned investors await H&M's second-quarter profit figures due Wednesday.

H&M isn't unique in collaborating with big name designers, with British retailer Debenhams the first mass market retailer to come out with the idea of designer collections back in 1993. Today its "Designers by Debenhams" portfolio, which includes collaborations with U.K. designers like Betty Jackson and Matthew Williamson, is part of its permanent collection and represents 25% of sales.

As the company has already said that second-quarter revenue fell short of expectations, its gross margin will be closely watched and eyes will also be on how well it has managed costs. Its bottom line is expected to have taken a hit from higher raw material costs and the appreciation of the Swedish krona against the euro.

Last year's Lanvin collaboration was available in 200 stores, representing 10% of the company's floor space, while this year's collaboration will be available from Nov. 17 in about 12% of its stores, or 300 stores in addition to online.

Jimmy Choo being the most successful? I remember people going CRAZY for Karl. And everyone seems to forget Sonia Rykiel once designed for H&M...

I thought Jimmy Choo's collection wasn't that successful contrary to what the article said. I personally so racks of it still left in stores months after its initial release.

I'm excited about this, what I can see so far looks good and the fact Donatella plans to take it back to the Gianni era is great. H&M's e-commerce is appalling, it will collapse at this launch within seconds!

I think Jimmy Choo did amazingly well with the shoes and bags, which for the most part sold out very quickly, it was the clothes that sat in stores for a long time.

The Rykiel collection, like one of the Matthew Williamson ones doesn't really count as being the same as say the Stella or Lanvin ones. Rykiel and Williamson both had lines going to almost all stores, it was produced in the biggest volumes and so wasn't actually that hard to get hold of.

It's a cool idea that the online store will get an exclusive second collection though.

Overall I'm really not a Versace kinda guy, but if there's some great little tailored jackets in there I'll be happy to part with some money for one. The men's tailoring is usually pretty amazing for the money in these collections. The Lanvin blazer I got is just impeccable.

I'm not a fan of Donatella, but so far it really looks good! It's gonna be insane in November!

there were good initial sales, but lots of returns too. especially the red and black tulle dresses were still hanging around until after Christmas.

Thats extremely surprising because where I come from the collection was gone within about 2 hours of its introduction! And if you didnt get anything, then that was it.. you were done for.
But to be honest I didnt even like the dresses.. they looked pretty ****ty.

i guess they must be really hurting cause i don't think we ever got such an early preview of the collection as we did now. we saw a lot of it already via the sketches. remember the craze and the pixelation of the Lanvin pieces?

I just realized how grateful I am that it isn't Valentino for H&M. That would be a disaster.

Just saw the resort collection. What a mess. I'm starting to warm up to this Versace-thing. Mainly because the alternatives are frightening.

If they do a pair of black leather pants and a black evening gown I'd seriously reconsider. But we'll see.

The collection will be based on heritage Versace designs, particularly the Miami print made famous by her late brother Gianni. “The moment is right to be rehashing iconic Versace pieces, I can feel it in the air,” mused Donatella Versace in an exclusive interview. “H&M represents an amazing connection to a broader customer base and to a younger audience that loves Versace but can’t afford to buy it. This is especially exciting and stimulating for me.”
The sexy, colorful, printed and down-to-the-last-stud Versace collection that she is preparing for H&M is likely to generate the same mayhem as the retailer’s past designer collaborations by the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Alber Elbaz, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli and Jimmy Choo. Versace also developed a pre-spring collection for H&M available exclusively in countries with H&M online sales from Jan. 19.
“Versace is one of the most important brands of recent times and their collection for H&M will be glamorous and extraordinary — everything Versace stands for,” said Margareta van den Bosch, creative adviser at H&M. “This is such a celebratory collaboration and is perfect for the festive season.”

Versace, who said she took on the collection before Lady Gaga recently requested to wear archival Versace, is reworking the house’s exuberant heritage and high-wattage va-va-voom in full force, or as she puts it, “not for the shy.”
Besides leather, studs and glistening chain mail, the designer reinvented a number of foulard prints, most notably the best-selling, brand-defining Miami one, ablaze with a wild palm and sea motif.
Dresses are the key silhouettes, generally skimming the body and accessorized with high heels and bold costume jewelry. The men’s portion will feature sharp tailoring and tuxedos.
While H&M designers were impressed with the house’s archives, Versace said they were adept at sourcing silks and leathers at bargain prices that look anything but cheap. “There won’t be a polyester piece in sight,” she warned. (wwd.com)
