The styling is too literal. The pose, the makeup, and the headpiece looks more costume than fashion.

But I don't see a different way that headpiece could have been styled... Anything else added beyond that headpiece would have been a complete mess. I think we can't judge much on the pose because it's just a head shot it being a beauty issue and the make up is spot on. as for the headpiece, I think it really meant as a costume/accessory to add drama and emphasis to the photo. and it really is a costume piece

People should at least use Google before saying disrespectful things towards models who do not interest them. If you search for "US Vogue December 1997", you will be able to see that Adriana was featured on it. And shot by Steven Meisel...

Anyway, I don't like the cover, I'd rather see a raw photograph than this airbrushing nightmare.

Nice that Adriana is cover girl, but i don't why M&M shoot almost the all covers of VP this year, i mean, i'm getting tired to see many covers & ad campaigns by them. Not the other photographers are not available?

I do not think so. I much prefer to see a new striking fresh face that i wont see ever again, that someone that is basically a celebrity. I never understood why people are constantly pinning for the time of the model-celebrity era, everyone seems to have conveniently forgot (or are too young) how tremendously tacky everything became and why we went to the polar opposite for a while. And Adriana is very much tacky.

I get your point, there are a lot of new faces, gorgeous some of them, but incredibly dull and boring most of the time, they will be in fashion for two seasons, and that does not mean, at all, they are striking. I have no problem when Vogue Italia does this, but that's because Vogue Italia has done this for years, and works for them, this is a marketing point of view for VP, this stablished models sell much more than a new "striking" new face. Let's be real.

there always are ways to style "dull" things creatively. not that this headpiece would be dull per se, but smokey eyes and oiled up body on grey background, seriously? it's completely lacking a wit vogue paris covers used to have, they could've gone for red lips or something completely ordinary to combine it with to lift it onto another level. this is just another joan d'arc look we've seen a million times before.

Same here, but it's Alt so I don't see that coming. She has been using the same four photographers these past four years (Mario Sorrenti too, but he had just one cover).

I wouldn't consider this a rip off of that Anna Ewers shot anymore than I would consider any other image that uses the same piece of clothing a rip off. Are all those shots of that ugly Prada coat a rip off of one another??

When it's these two-- who are always paying tribute, homage-- or to be frank, ripping off greater fashion photographers for their own work, then it's my conclusion that it's a rip-off.

As far as styling goes, I can think of a few options to go with without overwhelming the piece or the makeup that they want to spotlight, along with a few options for a more striking pose that doesn't instantly remind people of the Demarchelier shot. That's just my preference-- since I'd prefer not to follow a shot that was done not too long ago by a much more superior photographer that would invite comparison, and criticism. And as far as the makeup goes, there's nothing wrong with the style-- except for the over-photoshopping job that these two seem to be known for that makes her face look like it's a mask photoshopped onto the headpiece. These guys need to take it easy when it comes to photo-editing.

Shooting the same Prada coat, dress, etc can't be compared to this instance as a rip-off if the tone, the mood, and the styling is different. Very different context.

Oh yeah wow I&V just had 1 cover this year (and sadly so happens to be the best cover / editorial they had for 2014) didn't even notice that. I also do hope that they add new photographers for their covers like what Anna's doing for US (Mikael Jansson) but I doubt they'll ever replace the 4 completely. It also scares me how they're back in using Testino lately. The covers he shot should've been used for I&V instead..

This is an awful cover. I don't expect much from VP anymore but I couldn't believe this was an actual VOGUE cover. At BEST this could a mall magazine cover. Every aspect of it secretes neophytism.

Completely agree, she should stick to what she knows best and what got her the fame. VS runway, not fashion!

Adriana Lima is one of the very few models that will be talked about in the next at least 100 years. Iconic beauty & she can look transform from a bombshell to edgy model.
She sells magazines! Men and women are interested in her.
This year she finally reached the status SUPERMODEL.
Adriana Lima is timeless.

High Fashion x VS debate is trite. Adriana looks good, deal with it. The only thing that is off about this cover is editors trying to push Dolce & Gabbana's obsession with medieval aesthetic.

its funny how people are saying Adriana wont happen, shes one of the most successful models of ALL time! I love the cover, something different about it, As for the head piece, it wont be the first time a similar piece of clothing is used on different covers, all the covers posted here are not only shot but also styled rather differently

Well that cover is just from a month ago and when you take into account production time (magazines are compiled months in advance, covers too) this wouldn't really be copying.

I mean if you look back to the mid/late Sixties a lot of Vogue covers had the jeweled head pieces and turbans so it looks like an homage to that ... a really bad one btw) ... and if you really want to give credit where credit is due then I guess the round table boys are the OG 'trendsetters'.

Back to the cover - the makeup is so bad, looks like dirt although maybe that's the whole warrior effect they're going for ... if it is, it's still just unappealing. And any visual impact of the armor is just lost with this gray background and that odd amount of uncovered skin showing at the bottom. Like others have mentioned before, just kind of wonky 'unfinished' art direction in general.

Gorgeous cover, and Adriana is one of the most beautiful women in the world.
She's a much more appealing cover subject, than most of these boring girls that are only fascinating to insiders, who crave "weird", over beauty.

Adriana is a supermodel, and she happened years ago. It's bananas that this is her first VP cover.
