The 15 New Faces That Ruled Fall 2016
March 11, 2016 5:18 pm by Janelle Okwodu
New faces are always being added to modeling’s talent pool, but this season the market was flooded. If Fall 2016’s shows were bigger and bolder than ever, well, so were the models. A fresh crop emerged to walk the runways of New York, London, Milan, and Paris, bringing with them energy, excitement, and undeniable appeal. With so many promising girls on the scene at the moment, a mere top 10 just doesn’t cut it anymore: Take a look at the 15 brand-new breakthrough models with the bookings, allure, and personality to go the distance.
Dilone (DNA)
Hometown: Long Island, New York
Season highlights: Balmain, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Versace
Follow her: @_dilone
Dilone’s momentum had been building since the Pre-Fall collections, and the native New Yorker used this season to follow through on all her positive buzz. A rapper with a gamine look and ease in front of the camera, Dilone proved herself to be a versatile commodity, garnering impressive shows in every single city. Not every girl can be an haute hippie for Anna Sui and then transform into one of Donatella Versace’s vixens, but Dilone managed to pull it off. Already booking the covers of independent magazines, she is certain to be on designer short lists once campaign season rolls around.
Mali Koopman (Women)
Hometown: Sydney, Australia
Season highlights: Valentino, Chanel, Céline, Balenciaga
Follow her: @malikoopman
Australian cool girls were trending this season, and Koopman embodied the look. An elegant presence on the catwalk for some of the world’s most prestigious labels, she made strutting for Valentino, Chanel, and Balenciaga appear effortless. An architecture student back home in Sydney, Koopman appealed to designers with intellectual leanings, even snagging the opening spot for Phoebe Philo at Céline.
Charlee Fraser (IMG)
Hometown: New South Wales, Australia
Season highlights: Rodarte, Marni, Prada, Dior
Follow her: @charleefraser
By trading her long curls for a Louise Brooks–esque bob in a familiar crimson right before the season began, Fraser reinvented her look and immediately caught the eye of every casting director in town. This makeover made her the ideal choice to open Marni, strut for Prada, and even take Demna Gvasalia’s first Balenciaga collection for a spin. With her doe eyes and sculpted cheekbones, Fraser is destined to make waves in editorials, too.
Selena Forrest (Next)
Hometown: Long Beach, California
Season highlights: Proenza Schouler, Marc Jacobs, Loewe, Louis Vuitton
Follow her: @selenaforrest
Last season, Forrest opened Proenza Schouler and then promptly headed back to California. For Fall, she made her way through the full circuit, following Proenza with appearances at every show worth talking about. She even got to meet her fave celeb, Zendaya, backstage at Louis Vuitton. A skateboarder with attitude to spare, Forrest may just be the next tomboy model photographers become obsessed with.
Alanna Arrington (Next)
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Season highlights: Chanel, Altuzarra, Off-White, Lanvin
Follow her: @alannaarringto
A Midwestern girl with international appeal, Arrington arrived on the scene with a vengeance, kicking off NYFW with an opening spot at Altuzarra and following it up with one impressive booking after another. By the time she showed up in Paris on Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton runway, a star was born—not bad for a self-confessed Harry Potter nerd!
Katie Moore (Trump)
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Season highlights: Alexander Wang, Moschino, Givenchy, Balenciaga
Follow her: @katherineann.moore
Never underestimate the power of a good makeover—especially when Guido Palau is behind it. Prior to opening the Alexander Wang show, Moore was transformed from a blonde-next-door to everyone’s most-wanted punk. Which isn’t to say it’s all about the hair: It takes more than that to pull off a season as good as Moore’s was. Working with brands that understand the appeal of the unconventional—Vetements, Rick Owens, and Saint Laurent among them—helped her become one of Fall’s biggest success stories.
Natalie Ludwig (Elite)
Hometown: Vancouver
Season highlights: Ralph Lauren Collection, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Valentino
Follow her: @natalielud
Classic good looks never go out of style, and Ludwig is as classic a beauty as we’ve seen these past few seasons. Her perfect proportions and Ivy League pedigree make her a throwback to the glamour girls of the early aughts, but her show list represents the best of right now. Whether she was fitting right in with Christopher Bailey’s Burberry troupe or playing against type at Maison Margiela, Ludwig was the model to watch.
Shelby Hayes (The Lions)
Hometown: Orange County, California
Season highlights: Derek Lam, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Valentino
Follow her: @shelbyhayes14
A sci-fi fan with a curly ’fro and a bubbly personality, Hayes has been experiencing a bona fide “moment” since before NYFW began. Appearances everywhere—from Prada to Missoni to Louis Vuitton—only served to cement her status as an It girl. Now that Juergen Teller and Marie-Amélie Sauvé have taken note of her, even more major work can’t be far behind.
Julia Ratner (Elite Europe)
Hometown: Ukraine
Season highlights: Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Prada, Valentino
Follow her: @dear.ratner
Otherworldly new face Ratner first wowed during Miu Miu’s dramatic Pre-Fall show, and in the months since she’s only continued to impress. Calling to mind the baby-faced–model wave that gave us names like Sasha Pivovarova and Gemma Ward, Ratner’s ultra-sweet look has made her continuously in demand. Joining the Chanel brigade alongside girls like Kendall Jenner and the Hadid sisters, Ratner more than held her own.
Teddy Quinlivan (One Management)
Hometown: Boston
Season highlights: Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Victoria Beckham
Follow her: @teddy_quinlivan
It’s not enough to just walk down a runway; great models need great personalities—which Quinlivan has got in spades. An art student turned catwalker, Quinlivan throws all her energy into each pose. Though only in her first full season, she already has an influential fan club—street style photographers love her, casting directors are obsessed, and designers can’t seem to get enough. When your show list features nothing but the best, including Saint Laurent, Prada, Gucci, Burberry, and more, you’re doing something right.
Mayowa Nicholas (The Society)
Hometown: Lagos, Nigeria
Season highlights: Prada, Miu Miu, Dior, Dries Van Noten
Follow her: @mayowanicholas
The face! The body! The breakthrough moment! It was clear that Nicholas was a star back when she won Nigeria’s round of Elite Model Look back in 2014, but Fall provided her with a moment in the spotlight. Whether she was appearing at Miu Miu alongside Adriana Lima or walking Dior and Prada for the first time, Nicholas was drumming up excitement—and making a name for herself—wherever she turned up this month.
Lorena Maraschi (Next)
Hometown: Paraty, Brazil
Season highlights: Prada, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Valentino
Follow her: @lorenamaraschi
In a word: adorable. Prada opener Maraschi was easily the cutest new face to emerge this season, and her combination of doll-like looks and sophistication proved irresistible. Following up Prada with turns at Loewe, Kenzo, and Valentino gave Maraschi runway bragging rights, and she’s already made her way to some influential fashion glossies.
Paulina Frankowska (Elite)
Hometown: Tczew, Poland
Season highlights: Prada, Dior, J.W.Anderson, Valentino
Follow her: @paulinafrankowska
An enchanting newbie, Frankowska added a touch of fairy-tale prettiness to every show she appeared in. Especially adept at pulling off the season’s dramatic looks, Frankowska seemed right at home in Dior’s black lips and Prada’s dainty sailor hats.
Naki Depass (Elite)
Hometown: Clarendon, Jamaica
Season highlights: Burberry, Prada, Givenchy, Céline
Follow her: @nakidepass
Sometimes it isn’t about the quantity of shows a model walks, but the quality. Though she only appeared in four shows this season, Depass ensured all eyes were on her the entire time. Tall, lean, and impossibly graceful, she made her presence felt from the get-go, debuting with an exclusive at Burberry, then following it up with turns at Prada, Céline, and Givenchy.
Cong He (IMG)
Hometown: Hunan, China
Season highlights: Proenza Schouler, Marni, Balmain, Miu Miu
Follow her: @heconghc
Cong’s innate poise and inarguable appeal have made her a favorite of Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel, but Fall saw the beauty become a girl most wanted by all of fashion’s elite. Walking more than 30 shows—all of them exceptional in quality—Cong was one of the hardest working models of the season.
