Your personal fashion rules

I don't have a lot of rules. What is flattering and goes together is mainly instinctual.

But I do believe that if it isn't comfortable, then it doesn't look good. Mainly with lengths. I feel irritated just looking at a shirt that would be too short on me.

Agree with you! It doesn't matter if the shirt is supercute or whatever, if it's a bit too short that I have to pull it down all the time when I'm wearing it, I wont wear it anymore in my life. It's irritating.

I know. It's a shame too, because I like a lot of frilly, lacy tops, but most of the ones I see happen to be short! What I REALLY hate is when they're too short and too curvy at the same time. Then it just ends up sticking out at my waist and screws up the whole balance.

Yeah, I know the feeling. With those shirts, you usually have to be curvy and short right along with them

Basic rule: there must be at least one pure feminine piece on me that makes me differ from guys.

• as said before, no denim jackets with jeans
• nothing too boyish; I like being a girl!
• but: nothing too girlish either (big flowers in the hair, everything in pink... )
• bags and shoes don't have to be in the same colour, I actually prefer it if they aren't
• clothes must fit well (nothing too baggy/tight/long/short)
• no superduper low rise jeans, or as Roisin Murphy said: "If you can see the crack, bring that sh*t back!" (this is not a joke, she actually did say that)

also i hate this tendency to dislike things that are too fashionable... there was a time when polka dots and stripes were lovely (must admit i have several stripey tees and sweaters myself though) but i am getting sick of seeing stripes and polka dots items everywhere...

funny cos i have always wished to have this very skinny figure with very few curves in order to wear a manly look in a cool way... but there is always the obvious fact (i dont need to wear a dress or wear pink clothing items) which makes it obvious (sometimes too obvious) that i am a girl... but i guess it is mother nature and my family genes to blame for my breasts...

I have skinny figure with moderate curves but still i feel boyish if i wear simple t-shirt and pants. It's strange cause i know i'm feminine thx to thin bone structure but on the other hand i feel boyish easily.

I agree with most of your rules, but I would add a couple more:

Buy the best you can afford. Even if this means a limited wardrobe.

Look after your clothes. Air them outside, beware of dry cleaners or dryers.

Perfect fit is everything. It is very handy to learn how to alter your clothes.

Any item which steals your heart literally, buy it. Or you will never see it again. If it means not being able to afford anything for months afterwards, so be it.

never hot pants/ mini skirts with heels
never tight top with tight pants
never white or black all over, i always add a bit of "a" bright colour to black and never ever mix baby colours to white.
never wear runners/trainers with anything other than sport clothing.

Nah... I guess I usually dress by unspoken rules that make up "my" style. But sometimes you have to through all those out the door - the result may be more costume than outfit, but sometimes you've got to live life playing a part.

Don't match shoes and bag.

No revealing the midriff (one advantage to being a bit chunkier in the midriff is I don't feel the need to bare it).

No pajamas out of the house.

No athletic shoes for anything besides gym.

No fur.

No white socks except for gym.

No obvious logos.

No panty lines.

No going without a bra unless it's a top where I can't wear one (convertible bras do not fit, I've tried everyone out there and it does not work), in which case it either has a shelf bra, or I go braless.

I love this thread. I think of myself, modestly, as the most fashionable of my friends b.c I don't do the matchy-matchy what you see exactly in a store look. It made me laugh reading this thread, remembering the many times my friends would soberly say...."navy and black together?" or "shoes need to be matched to your bag" oh dear hahahah
