Anyway, to go back to Kate fashion (so Meg doesn't get mad at me), I think her best display of style so far has been the colourful sundresses she has been wearing at Polo matches.

I know, you would think that as she does have a nice figure but she's very straight up and down/ doesn't have a defined waist so I think she needs to pay attention to the shapes she wears as not everything looks flattering on her

I think that Paws and Harumi are both right. Diana-mania was immediate if you consider that the "mania" includes the paparazzi hordes chasing her on the sidewalk. That was happening before the engagement, it happened when it became a well-known "secret" she was Prince Charles' girlfriend who had been invited to Balmoral and Sandringham, because those invitations were considered important signs of royal commitment. The mania from the public, however, was more gradual, though fast. You can say it went like this:

PRESS Mania --> Paparazzi mania (because they had to fill the press demand, to get paid) --> Back to Press Mania --> Steady Rise to Public Mania

^^I see what you saying but really I don't think that will be too much of a problem as she does have that above average over-all figure.
I think the problem she will have will be the endless criticism of her fashion choices - hopefully it won't hold her back and she can come into her own.

I don't want Kate (sorry, Catherine) to be a fashion icon, ever. I want to see her always taking care of herself and dressing well befitting her position, but she doesn't have to be a fashion icon. I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this, but I really admire the way Sophie Wessex has behaved since her marriage. Except that one little incident a decade ago, she has been refreshingly non drama queen. The 80s/90s were horrible with all the Diana and Fergie drama. In an interesting way, fashion really feeds into media drama. The two just go together for some reason. It's like, either you are a fashion drama queen/over-photographed/hyped icon (Diana, Jackie O) who can never be happy or you are boring like Sophie. If I had a choice of which I would want to be, I would take Sophie. I guess it is a sign of growing up, but anyway, I'm at a stage of life where boring looks really good to me. Drama and spice and flare, it's all so overrated. I'd rather be happy!!!!

I agree. I think it would odd and farcical if she started dressing in all the seasons latest trends. Someone suggested having someone like Zoe style her - she'd be better off being frumpy, badly dressed Kate Middleton than a Zoe client imo.

The white dress she wore for the engagement pictures was perfect; it was chic, stylish but at the same time it wasn't too 'fashiony' or overpowering. There's a difference between conservative frump and conservative elegant/chic which is something she needs to get right in her outfits

Very interesting point you make there ... Jackie had some quiet years, and her clothes were pretty quiet too. Fergie was never anywhere close to a fashion icon, but she certainly has the scandalous touch ... I did like her choice of wedding gown. That would be a really good dress for Kate to get right

I think she needs to stick to the foundations of her style (classic dresses to or just above the knee, with a simple blazer or coat etc.) but turn up it a bit in terms of quality. she can keep her boots as long as she gets a new (better) pair and she doesn't wear them day in, day out. I hope she gets access to better jewellery once she's married, I hate that sad little watch she always wears.

As for her wedding dress, I hope it's simple (i.e. her style) but gorgeous like Princess Mary's dress.
