i think you are all missing what riccardo is doing. im going to break the collection down for you.
Dior sells almost no couture. they are doing it in a way that says we still the most powerful we can afford to make costumes. Givenchy is trying to Pull a chanel move. this collection is full of Jackets and Pants suits the main sellers in Couture. gowns are almost always a loss because 1 person will order a gown and no one else will want it because they all run in the same circles. He can mod each jacket a little for his clients. he is doing just what he should trying to SELL couture. there are some power moves in there Fabric Sculpting and his tranparant froks over short skirts are not just in SSHC07 but in his second couture collection those are very Givenchy thats part of the code. his resort collections and RTW are selling like hot cakes and hes is making a profit on couture. pay attention he is making power moves dont just look at the "SHOW Peices" Look at all the things in the collection that will sell. hes is about to make tons of $$$ with this. Bravo Tisci
eternitygoddess said:Um...I think you're missing the point of couture. Couture is the highest form of expression in fashion and allows designers to create what they aren't capable of in RTW.
If he wants to make $$$, do it in RTW. Here, he is just wasting his creativity.

I love this collection it's beautiful but first thought like everyone else was "isn't this more R-T-W" and second thought was "who the hell is going to pay over $30,000.00 for leather pants".
Yeah I too can see Courtney Love in them but she probably won't pay for them that's the difference. Beverly Hills housewives don't where Givenchy couture round the house it's called Juicy couture.
you need to look at the history of couture
Showy costume couture was the invention of YSL
Givenchy like chanel was always been about the Givenchy woman and not a Parade float. this is Haute couture not Haute Costume.
this is what it is sopposed to be about.
Shows like galiano are for the press Givenchy is for the buyer.
Haute couture used to be sold he is bring that aspect back.
Wow, what a beautiful collection! That is what haute couture should look like in 2008. Rather than referencing looks that are 60 years old or looking back at past decades, this collection looks toward the future or at least the present. Bigger doesn't have to be better, the beauty is in the simplicity.
So, Elizabethan Ruffs and Regency and Victorian/Edwardian silhouettes aren't looking back, then, in your book?
Yes, while I think there are several details like those you mentioned do invoke Victorian/Edwardian silhouettes etc.. I was looking at the collection a whole and taking it in in it's entirety, I still have to say it has non of that "old hat" feel of some of the other couture houses who are putting out tons of showy ball gowns for ladies who lunch. There is nothing vintage or retro here, just couture for the new school.
Couture was all about custom work in all it's forms (day to evening) and artistic expression within reason. Now it seems to be about re-nventing fashion with each fashion show. That just is not possible. True creators are about evolution not revolution.
