H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB: H&M Acquires the Company behind Cheap Monday, Weekday and Monki

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Regulatory News:

H&M STO.HMB. has signed an agreement to acquire the privately owned Swedish fashion company Fabric Scandinavien AB that is running the store chains Weekday and Monki. The Group also designs and sells fashion through a number of own brands, such as Cheap Monday. The turnover for the financial year 2007/08 is expected to reach approximately SEK 400 million. The company will be run as a stand alone subsidiary within the H&M Group.

– We have been impressed by Fabric Scandinavien’s development for a long time and we see a potential to develop stores and concepts in other markets. By working together we can accelerate the growth further. We can also do it in a more efficient manner by drawing on H&M’s experience and knowledge of for example production, logistics and establishment, says H&M’s CEO Rolf Eriksen.

– H&M is a fantastic company and we have found that we share the same values. Together with H&M we will have better opportunities to truly develop our ideas within fashion and design. H&M’s knowledge of for instance production and international expansion will be extremely valuable to us, says Fabric Scandinavien’s CEO Lars Karlsson.

The subsidiary Weekday Brands designs, produces and runs wholesale selling of young fashion. Its largest own brand is Cheap Monday, primarily a denim line. The idea behind Cheap Monday is fashion at good prices, something that goes well with H&M’s business idea; fashion and quality at the best price. Cheap Monday is sold in more than 1,000 stores globally. Among the brands are also MTWTFSS Weekday and Sunday Sun.

The store chain Weekday is an urban unisex concept with a total of six stores in Stockholm, Uppsala, Gothenburg and Malmö. In March the first store will open outside Sweden in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Monki is a store concept and an own brand for young females. Since the start in Gothenburg in 2006 Monki has expanded to Stockholm, Uppsala, Malmö, Karlstad, Sundsvall and Norrköping, amounting to a total of twelve stores.

H&M acquires 60 percent of the shares in Fabric Scandinavien for SEK 564 million in cash. Sellers are the founders Adam Friberg, Lars Karlsson, Örjan Andersson and Linda Friberg. They will all continue to work within the company. In connection with the transaction the parties entered into agreement according to which H&M has the possibility/obligation to acquire the remaining shares in the company within three to five years. The total turnover of the Group’s business was approximately SEK 250 million during the financial year 2006/07, with an operating result of SEK 67 million. The expected turnover for the financial year 2007/08 is approximately SEK 400 million with continued good profitability. The employment conditions for the 300 employees will not change as a result of the transaction.

The transaction is conditioned by acceptance of relevant competition authorities. SEB Enskilda has acted as financial advisor to H&M in connection with the acquisition.

Shouldn't be too surprising really. Good move by h&m, weekday, monki and cheap monday are really poopular in Sweden.

Rather strange but I guess I see the point. I just wish Weekday would have stayed a little more underground (ok its not underground in Scandinavia anymore) globally.
Oh well, as long as they keep their own look and dont change the designs or anything just cause of H&M is involved, Im okay...

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

Fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz AB said Thursday it has signed a deal to buy privately owned Swedish fashion company Fabric Scandinavien AB, maker of Cheap Monday jeans.

H&M said it has bought a 60 percent stake in Fabric Scandinavien for 564 million kronor ($92 million) from the founders of the company, Adam Friberg, Lars Karlsson, Orjan Andersson and Linda Friberg. It also has the possibility to acquire the remaining stake within three to five years.

Apart from designing Cheap Monday jeans, Fabric Scandinavien also runs the store chains Weekday and Monki in Sweden.

Weekday is an urban unisex concept with a total of six stores, while Monki's 12 stores are aimed at young women.

With their punk-rock style, trendy tight fit and affordable price, Cheap Monday jeans have become a hot commodity in recent years and are now sold in more than 1,000 stores globally.

H&M said the company will be run as a stand alone subsidiary within the H&M Group.

In the financial year ended 2007, Fabric Scandinavien had revenue of 250 million kronor ($41 million) and an operating profit of 67 million kronor ($11 million).

H&M said it expects revenue for 2008 to reach about 400 million kronor ($65 million).

"We have been impressed by Fabric Scandinavien's development for a long time and we see a potential to develop stores and concepts in other markets. By working together we can accelerate the growth further. We can also do it in a more efficient manner by drawing on H&M's experience and knowledge of, for example, production, logistics and establishment," H&M Chief Executive Rolf Eriksen said.

If that means Cheap Monday will be more readily available I'm all for it. They fit me so well and don't stretch out!

really sad ... its H&M everywhere u look.
Soon they're gonna be just like McDonalds - if they're not already.
In the perfect world Cheap Monday would still have stayed like they are today, but - money money money.

564 million IN CASH. Few people would say no, especially if it means keeping your company around for good.
There is a awful lot of skinny kids who need jeans I suppose, but what will they do for an encore?

H&M bought the company and the brand, that does not mean that they will be selling CM jeans in H&M stores. Like the article states: "H&M said the company will be run as a stand alone subsidiary within the H&M Group."

boo hoo thanks for raining on everybodies parade.....maybe we wont see cheap monday jeans in H&M stores but their designers we still influence future H&M ranges just with cheaper fabrics.....i think its really good news like i said H&M are on the ball right now.....

Ok, I don't know why you are taking this so personally. :ermm:

Also, Cheap Monday jeans are in the same price range as H&M jeans. That's the whole concept of Cheap Monday - fashionable but cheap jeans.

you read my mind.

I don't know Cheap Monday. And I can't seem to find any pics. Anyone have a site where I can see some or have photos?

Me too. I don´t know Cheap monday. Please someone can show some pics.

Listen, as long as they keep the prices DOWN, everything will be OK. Truly, no one does a skinny jean for such an affordable price like Cheap Monday. :P

I just hope they dont for example change the "satanic" logo just because H&M would think its "not religious" etc. Stupid changes like that will not be tolerable. They need to keep their own thing even though H&M is involved.

For those who do not know Cheap Monday, check the Weekday site: www.weekday.se

Since when is H&M a religious brand? In Sweden they'd be in more trouble if someone accused them of that, rather than being "satanic".

Cheap Monday has a website of their own btw, http://www.cheapmonday.com/

I'm in love with cheap monday for years , they have the same concept as h&m but i don't agree with this..in same way it's taking away cheap monday's 'value'
