I don't think Acid enjoyed his time there very much and from what i understand the general consensus is that it's not that great of a school quality wise. You are basically just paying for a degree. London College of Fashion and St.Martins and some of the other University of the Arts London colleges are much better imo

Ravensbourne VS LCF for foundation studies in art design

Hey there, sorry if i have posted this in the wrong section, just needed some advice.

I have recieved offers from LCF and ravensbourne for foundation studies in art and design but im really really stuck on which one to choose, any advice would be brillant.

what kind of porfolio does CSM look for when a student apply there?
i mean the fashion design one

are they like parsons..looking for more technical drawings than expressive
do they want garments already made? and fashion drawings?
if i did something like..make a dress out of dried up gouche paint..would that be a good portfolio piece?

what's their academic standard for international student? real high? or depends on the portfolio


someone please help provide as much info as possible

Is there anybody who is going to, or already studying in University of Central England (UCE)?

To be honest, I am currently at LCF and I'm considering leaving. Yes, LCF is a good school with an amazing reputation, but as I am not sixteen anymore, the place and students kinda does my head in.
No offence to anyone who goes there ...as I go there too

I pay international fees so your looking at about ten grand a year (pounds) and I hate that I feel like I'm wasting money there, I now skip classes as it is a big issue for me, going there and dealing with so many childish rants everyday. I will rather go somewhere which is strongly focused on work, so I can do it and get it over with.
But then again I might just hate LCF as I feel like everyone there is really young and trying soo hard to be emo and 'different' which doesn't necessarily equal talent.
(as I said I go there too so I can diss it).

Any more 'grown up' fashion schools in London??

hmm kytila thanks for the input. I'm 20 but would be entering school as a freshman and as i've been out on my own since i was 17 i have little patience for people trying to do the whole student thing. And yes, intl. student fees suck. Where are you from originally? What about Ravensbourne for you?

kytila, could you tell me a bit more about the attitude of your fellow students at LCF in general? I'm starting a foundation course there later in the year and I'm curious...

@Meg and cheesetoastie: I'm from the states, but like you have lived on my own most of my life, (since I was fifteen), I started university at tampa, and completed my AA before deciding to move to London to do fashion.
The thing is even at tampa I was soo bored off the whole 'student thing' as unlike a lot of people I wasnt walking around thinking 'yay freedom' or something.

My issue at LCF, the students. I should not say its easier for international students to get in there, but I'm positive it is, as we have to pay soo much... And well, ultimately they have to make money. But most UK students go through a huge process before they get in, so by the time they do they already think they are all that, the next big thing etc.. And so they go out of their way to be 'different', from being really moody emo kids, too crazy... You have to deal with a whole lot of personality basically.

I'm not old I'm 22, but I guess if this was five years ago when I just started uni, I would have thought it was really cool and will probably have dyed my hair purple and only wear yellow. But now I just find it all really childish, all the competiveness, drama and extreme ego distract from the real purpose of being there.
(It's hard to study when two queens are having a b*tch fight about how indie they want to be, behind you).

Ps: These are just my opinions and they are very biased, afterall lots of people love it there. The lecturers are GREAT, LIKE AMAZING. My only issue is students.

Cheesetoastie, You're welcome.. But you should definetely ask other people as well. Beuase as open minded as I like to think I am, some things just drive my head in.

they just look for you being you - i didnt have any technical drawings in my portfolio i had like photographs of the garments i had made sketchbooks of projects that i had done, textiles, life drawings and anything else i though represented me.

saint martins is a school where everything is based from fine art everything comes from painting or drawing they like you to be expressive. dont just try and go there for the name, if the school doesnt suit you it will just be a waste of time appying.

I'm a University of the Arts London graduate... London College of Fashion. For any interested in all things fashion related there are some great courses.... Fashion Management, Promotion, Design, Technology etc.
The short courses are good too - covering nearly everything you could think of. Take a look at www.arts.ac.uk.

So, could you tell us which is better between Marangoni, AIU & St Martin and, if possible, why "this" school is better than "this" one.

hey

a few tips from me...don't take them as gospel or anything but it is useful. good academic grades is a wonderful starter. it's always very wise to include life drawing (make sure it is good quality and maybe show some earlier stuff to show progression as that's very important). sketchbooks are important too, with clear thoughts and ideas that lead to final pieces - that means exploring different styles, looking at source materials and getting inspiration from them. show your hand skills...they don't want someone who can't sew straight, that's just a given. would you be coming over for an interview or just sending your portfolio over?
