Prada Mens F/W 2008.09 Milan

Miuccia's gone too far. It's one thing to innovate and bring new things to fashion, but it's quite another to "be strange for the sake of being strange" as Spike said. I believe that fashion should be able to provide social commentary, but as fashion is a business, the clothes should be salable and wearable.

Fashion is not a competition for showing the most strange, bizarre things as possible. Strangeness simply isn't that difficult to accomplish. Tim Blanks says Miuccia turned "traditional concepts of masculinity...inside out." Did she really? In my next collection for a huge multinational corporation, I'm going to send my models out wearing ski masks, jackets with only one sleeve, watches worn as heart monitors, and, of course, riding chaps to show "male vulnerability".

As for the clothes themselves, I can't find a thing I like. The mini-skirts aren't bad. They aren't anywhere near 'good', but I'm not breaking into tears looking at them. The pants are awful, and I love new takes on pants. Everything metallic looks cheap. The trend is OVER. It seems some designers are only clinging to 'shiny' because it makes things look more expensive, which in theory makes them more desirable. The flesh-tone sweaters lack any sense of aesthetics. Lastly, the wifebeater vests and jockstrap cummerbunds are utterly ridiculous. And not in a good way. And that's not even mentioning the fact that those are a complete rip-off of Marc Jacobs S/S 08's tromp l'oeil underwear tops. The rest is a blend of her own Miu Miu women's S/S 08, and Martin Margiela women's S/S 08.

er...oh wow. i like some of the pieces in the show, the less...distracting pieces.

she really took androgyny to a whole new level, man, look at those tutu minis. also took the whole "show ya boxer" look to a whole new level! instead of boxers, she have speedos! incredible

sarcasm aside, i love the color palette here. i do like the nude color here, i think this color can definitely be explored more. alot of the details are quite nice as well, such as the double collar, some of the prints on the shirts

Who in their right mind, besides somebody in Right Said Fred would wear a nude top?

I love the grey jacket in the first post - very nicely done and I love the big bag, but i'm a sucker for bags.

The rest, I don't even think I'd be able to try and wear.

i think a lot of the pieces aren't meant to be profitable or sellable. miuccia just wanted to go on with her theme of surrealism. i guess it kinda could be like haute couture. it's just to be innovative and be the root of new ideas for men's fashions.

But i've now seen the whole collection (a few pages back) and I do like several of the pieces; I like that black suit with the jacket with no front openings. I'd like to see some of the shoes closer up.

Btw, is Miucca wearing a salon girl's uniform?

^^my thoughts exacly... what was she wearign???

EDIT: Tim Blanks has the ability to over-intellectualize every hideous collection on earth! jsut say things straight!

Man Law: NEVER wear mini skirt!

i second that!
and those of you agaisnt the idea, i would love to see you all wearing this lovely miniskirts we've seen here. WITHOUT THE TROUSERS!!:o:o
after all, men can wear anything, cant they?B)

about the collection: i love the deep yellow bag with the croc imprimé, i like the head to toe red look, i like the double collared shirt, and a the suit on post2. Fun to watch, ridiculous to wear... the trompe l'oeil just doesnt work here!

funniest thing of all, is that womenswear always look kinda similar to this... i cant wait to see what you girls think about this collection put back on you :flower:

Remember the saggy pants issues in the US? ;-)

But I think the "exposed panties" look quite like a small flat "passport and money bag" one sometimes wears around one's waist while traveling, esp. in "far away countries".

I think the collection is ab fab!

Men wore skirts b4 but never that short, hehe.

Uh yes, they can. I know that I and plenty of my friends would rock a tutu with some FABULOUS a** panties, do ourselves up and go about our business on the streets.

In fact, I just may wear a tutu this weekend. :ninja:

OK it's time to call in Suzy M

Miuccia Prada's show seemed to come from nothing tangible - just a subversive feeling that something is always going on under the streamlined surface, whether it is in the perverse thoughts of apparently simple guys or some inner monologue that Prada is having with herself. The clothes were modern and linear but they begged for psychoanalysis to untangle the weird touches that suggested wayward padres on the loose.

So could the Prada collection be summed up in a three letter word: sex?

"I don't know about that," the designer said backstage from the ramp of a runway rearing up to the arched ceiling of Prada's exhibition space. "But it is about things that men usually do to women - it's revenge!"

And revenge is sweet when men in innocent and elegant modern suits, the pants just drooping at the crotch in a discreet way, find their ties abstracted like neck braces, their chests covered with what look like clerical bibs tied over unbuttoned shirt backs. And add visible underpants rising high from their trousers like girlie thongs.

Even a simple thing like a ribbed sweater took on a suggestive tone when made in nude color to simulate bared skin. And each crisp cotton shirt seemed to carry a history in its bleached or faded patches. The overall effect was a Fellini-esque vision of a de-frocked priest.

This was a witty and sophisticated version of Prada's sometimes deliberately ugly and awkward vision. The colors were mostly urban shades of gray with flashes bright and cheery, from sky blue through scarlet - not least for the boots that will be must-haves of the winter 2008 season.

But just when you had decided that the show was quite classic in its pure tailoring, Prada would send out another subversive cross-dressing element, like a tiny tutu frill round the hips or a micro-mini kilt in sparkly fabric fitted over trousers with the emerging underpants.

The sly sexiness of the show was as subtle as it was unexpected and showed the designer in top form. And if you don't fancy the fetish elements, the basics were 100 percent Prada.

Ooooh Miuccia, how I love you and only you (and how right I was in my original thinking on the collection...) :innocent:

its seems the prada man is castrated and is in the quest for a vagina.

we are not goat herds, or dogs.
we are not born to breed, don't need to care about our kids. do need to care our fashion, (cuz, come on, we will soon all fu*king die. this is one god damn life.)

(sorry to goats and dogs... i like you guys)

i think i am liking susy's review... and that IS a first!!

i like the revenge idea behind it... which probably means that the woman show wont follow this direction as much as other season have (why would she first revenge on men, and then punish women?)... who knows... coherence doesnt seem to be in miuccias dna (maybe that's why i love prada so much)

I Luv Syzy's comment. After seeing the collection in it entirety, it ain't that bad, infact it is good.

Ooooh Miuccia, how I love you and only you (and how right I was in my original thinking on the collection...) :innocent:

and then we saw the same thing....
women making men suffering....
didn't notice....

but at least the product is good....

That, is very good...
^_^

and that, too :

some inner monologue that Prada is having with herself.

Ok I just noticed when you look at the whole collection its seems kind of regular( not really my thing)
minus the panties and tututs. The pics that we started with were not the
best looks of the collection at all but I still think (at this moment) it
was a hit and miss but come the editorials and when it hits the stores
I'm sure that I'll change my mind.

How can you like the miniskirts and not other things. Some of the fabric and pants are great. Plus when I see this again I'm only going to remember Prada, not Marc Jacobs or Margiela no matter who did what first. Nothing is completely innovative anyway.
