Catherine, Princess of Wales (Kate Middleton)

I mean the hat - I hate. But I'm American, so I don't really get the hat thing. She looks understated, but everyone said she was confident and prepared with the National Anthem and all that jazz.

I think she looks lovely. Royals (and future royals) have to walk a fine line with fashion. They can't be seen as too trendy (especially not the British royals), they have to be seen as relatable, but elegant and classy at the same time.

Kate looks great here. She was confident, and she dressed appropriately for the VERY windy weather. I like her hat and her coat. I think this is a vast improvement over some of her previous outfits. She's a country girl at heart, and I think she prefers that style of dressing, so this was a step for her (with the ankle boots ect).

I like the outfit. For her its better than how she dresses herself, its obvious she now has a stylist or something. I even like the boots; winter appropriate. And Im glad she finally pulled her hair back!

I think she does look really pretty here. Love her hair!

i guess we all have to be very grateful for Lady Diana and before her Wallis Simpson when it comes to the british royals and style

That's probably a fair statement. Wallis had the best jewelry collection too! I am still holding out hope for Kate's jewelry collection though...I hope we see her in some fabulous tiaras!

On closer inspection I think Kate may have worn this coat before (although it was much longer). If so, she is certainly following the royal family's tradition of recycling outfits. What do you guys think? Is it the same coat?

I agree that British Royals shouldn't dress overly trendy but I think it is possible to look stylish and appropriate without looking trendy. I don't think Kate is elegant. She just dresses old and matronly or failing that, unstylish.

I mean, is she wearing brown tights there? Ick. And those boots are horrendous.

Also, times have changed. No one should expect her to dress like Camilla. She's a young woman in a different generation. She should make an effort

what a boring coat......and she looked like she didn't take any of it seriously, like all of it was just a joke.....how embarrassing

Perhaps her behaviour as it appears on pictures is only a manifestation of her shyness or of her obvious lack of experience...?...

I think she looks lovely. I wouldn't pick out the coat or boats because the style is too old for me. (or for a 29-year old for that matter) But she looks much prettier with her hair pulled out of her face this way. Makes her look younger and more cheerful.

I hope she will start wearing some Calvin Klein, Celine or even Mulberry or Giambattista Valli. She's far too young to be wearing clothes ten years her senior. (not that she's been dressing her age, like ever...)

that thing on the hair is just hideous...and the outfit is nothing special, but better than previous

I think she looks pretty. Y'know, it's funny, outside of this forum, most gossip blog commentors seem to think she looks fab.

^ These look like photographs from a late 1980s catalogue. I really do wonder whether her outfits are being chosen by the Queen's or Camilla's aides.

I think she's looking great. She has a really difficult job, I don't envy her at all! She's in a very difficult position, she can't be to trendy because she'd be ripped to shreds. I suspect as she settles more into her duties we will see her style evolve, I think there's a degree of playing it safe and very demure at the moment, I mean yesterday the global interest will have been insane. Re-using the coat modified was a really good move, especially in this economic climate. It's true that outside this forum there has been nothing but praise for her. It's all very classic upper middle-upper class country girl wear really, on and off duty. Give the girl a break she's only on day two of her first official engagements!

I know, my first thought was Princess Anne.

That red suit is quite nice but she ruined it with the black turtle neck and those damn boots.
