James Cameron's AVATAR

I saw it recently and it's one of the best movies I have ever seen, it's one of those movies I would never get tired of seen again and again....

I have seen it twice, once in 3D on a normal screen and once in 2D on IMAX. First time I thought it was agood, second time I thought it was pretty boring and a bit silly.

Avatar sequel is going to be:

Im so tired of seein michelle rodriguez playin the bad girl its so cliche

I agree , she accepted the role soo I guess she love having this image of a tough girl, a little bit bad in a career perspective imo. How caricatural is it becoming.

loved it.

And yes agree about indigenous influences - the navi were def a combination of a few different cultures.

I love how all the creatures were like a cross between dinosaurs, giant bugs, and bioluminescent jellyfish.

I can't wait to see this again at imax.

LOVED THIS MOVIE. The plot wasn't close to anything memorable nor are there any good quotes to keep in mind. But the CG was out of this world. WELL worth the watch (in 3D though). I lol'd when I saw Michelle Rodriguez.

i feel like the characters and plot could definitely have been more complex - but then that would have perhaps alienated a chunk of viewers.

I know this probably sounds hugely snobby to say but oh well haha - i think Cameron had to make sure to appeal to the lowest common denominator with this film. A simple story that can appeal to everyone, and at the same time blow everyones mind with the cg.

I have just seen it.

For those who don't want to read my rant: every bit of hype this movie is receiving is deserved and the expectations are met. It's an instant classic that bears repeat viewings. Go see it.

For those who have a bit of time
:

The four things that made the movie so amazing to me (by increasing order of importance):

4 - The special effects: CGI and Fxs are double edged swords. When overused or when used to cover the absence of a plot, you get Transformer 2, 2012 or Matrix Revolutions. You need to have the right balance between spectacular and eye-pleasing, and know when to stop piling it on or it comes off as overwhelming and gimmicky. Cameron was very clever: he used the Fx to serve his story not to pump it full of steroids like the three examples I mentioned.
The animated characters are fascinating to look at, with every subtle expression and body language realistically rendered .
The visuals (especially the fauna) are simply awe-inspiring. When the movie end, you will be sad to leave such a magical universe.

3 - The main characters: Cameron is one of the few directors in Hollywood who truly loves and respect women. All his movies have strong, independent yet fully feminine characters and Avatar gives one of his best so far (Neytiri, played by Saldana). All the main female roles are meaty and compelling, and I really related to that.
Sam Worthington is incredible: quietly charismatic, subtly sensitive, charming, funny and incredibly sexy even as a blue cat-man. Those who saw him in Terminator know that he can shine even when given crappy material, so imagine him in that.
As for the other characters, there is a decent amount of character development given the genre, but the baddies are really caricatured and one-dimensional (money guy wants money, army guy wants to blow things up, yawnnn). But it doesn't spoil the movie and, as I said, the women truly shine in it.

2 - the storytelling: I say story telling not story because the plot is basic and you already know what will happen and how it will end just by watching the trailer. But it's irrelevant as what matters is not what the story is but how the story is told. And it's told beautifully: the dialogues, the pace, the music: everything is just pitch perfect. There isn't a moment of dullness, there isn't a single scene that does not advance the character's development or the plot.
It's the kind of movie that can be watched over and over.

1 - The Alien culture: the humanoid are acted and voiced by African-American actors, and their dress, facial features, way of life and religion (animism and shamanism) are all unmistakably pan-African. I found this amazing.
For once an American director who can look at traditional African cultures with a admiring eye, without paternalism or condescension.
I mean, do you remember that Spielberg movie Amistad where the Africans (supposedly at the center of the story) were treated like props, without even having their language translated? That's pretty much how Hollywood looks at Africa, so the respectful and inspired way Cameron built the whole Na'vi culture, and made it so appealing was really the high point of the movie, and one of the reason this movie is groundbreaking in more ways than just visually.

Agree with everything you said :flower:.
The movie was just amazing .

it's definitely a must see.
Despite having seen it several times, i think i'm not done with it yet. :p
Next step, see it in 3D. Can't wait :woot:.

James Cameron totally ripped off Pocahontus and made it 3D. And I loved it.

I saw this last night and I still don't 100% know how I feel about the movie. The effects were amazing and the colours were so heavenly. I liked it and had a good time watching it but it's not the best movie I've seen this year sorry.

I have to be honest and say that I'm not a huge fan of 3D. It's fun for this genre but there are other movies I can't picture being made this way in the future.

As for the acting. Stephen Lang was fantastic as the bad guy. I was a bit p*ssed that Sigourney Weaver didn't punch him or at least Giovanni Ribisi, who btw was the best I've ever seen him. Sam Worthington was good but his Aussie accent kept on coming through. I know it's hard but he should have had more help to keep in under control. Zoe Saldana was also solid and as for Michelle Rodriguez playing "badass chicks" all the time well look at it this way - if it an't broke don't fix it.

I just watched the movie, and absolutely LOVED IT. It leaves you wanting more, and as someone said earlier sad and disappointed to leave such a magical world. Im definitely going to watch it again, but this time in 2D since the first time i watched it in 3D and regretted it. I feel like watching 3D is totally irrelevant to this movies experience since the only thing i can remember being in 3D was water droplets, ash, floating jellyfish-seed-things (I have no idea what they are called), etc etc. Also it gave me abit of a headache and i had to take the glasses on and off continually which distracted the movie experience. So, i recommend watching it in 2D!
I know this is such a totally random part of the movie to love, but my favourite part was when jake kept slapping the jellyfish-seed things and Neytiri was pissed lols.

I went to see it thinking I would watch an Historical movie ...
I was pretty disappointed ...

The story is sooo "fleur blueue" (save the Planet and these energy thingies really made me laugh) and I felt that the 3D didn't really work on me ...
Everything was blur for like 10min in my eyes. Then I put my glasses on (which is complicated behind the 3D glasses !) and I was not really impressed ... Probably, it misses some "in your face" action ...
But this is probably, because it's the first 3D movie and not a lot of things have changed since Chaplin in a cinema room ...
I feel that this movie needs a remake with a "break-through-the-black-box" concept behind ...

I want some screens on the sides and in the back ...
I was pretty much disappointed, sincerely !

Anyway, having seen it in 2D and 3D (regular screen) I can vouch that the visuals are so extraordinary that they work in both cases. Simply stunning to look at either way.
And I'm excited because tomorrow I will see it in IMAX 3D, at last! I assume that will be the ultimate experience so I'm done after that (too much of a good thing...)
could you tell me what's the difference, coz I probably watch it on a regular screen !

^I'm sorry to hear that, but I understand your point of view: the story is basic so if you don't enjoy the visuals and get sucked into the Pandora universe, there isn't much left to enjoy, obviously.

To answer your question, IMAX is basically a huge, floor to ceiling, high definition screen (2 to 3 times the size of the regular ones). The only IMAX screen in France that shows Hollywood movies is in Disney Village so if you didn't see it there, then you definitely saw it on a regular screen.

This is how it looks like:

^thanks ...

that's pretty much on those type of screen that I would have liked to watch it ....

I watched the film 2 days ago in 3D and I COMPLETELY LOVED IT!!!

I loved the plot, the UNBELIEVABLE special effects, the connection with the nature, it was so poetic, so interesting... It was so well made! James Cameron is AWESOME! He managed to pick up a wasted subjet an turn it into a masterpiece! One of the best movies I've ever seen! (So much better than Titanic )

One of the best movies I've ever seen, I plan on seeing it again and again. A must have on blueray!

I am going to see it in Imax very soon!

I saw this movie today and halfway through it, I realized that it had turned me into a kid again - I was like a baby, you could say :p.
It was fantastic, I have never seen something like this before and I feel like I just watched my generation's Star Wars.
I just wish that they would have done a screening in Kopenhagen when we sent out our political leaders to save our planet - it was very subtle in its references on how mankind had treated earth to the year 2154...
I cannot quite put all the thoughts flying through my head into proper sentences yet - all I can say is that this film blew my mind. And that it has ruined all of my future cinematographic experiences forever as it might take many years before I get to see something like this ever again.
