Marc Jacobs F/W 08.09 NYC

I have to agree with the Halston comment. ^

In an odd way I would have been pleased had this been the new Halston collection. I can't quite put my finger on what it is that I expect from MJ, but this collection makes me feel a bit sad. There are some interesting pieces and I'm generally pleased when a designer tries a new direction even if I don't like it - but I'm not quite grasping this one. As someone pointed out, maybe in a week I will understand it better? :P

I do think it's also a little sad that more people are enthused by Sonic Youth (who I do love, btw) than the collection.

Yes, Halston meets early 80s Gianni Versace and a little bit of the more austere 60s high collars and that golden material he used is also something that was common in the early 60s. It really does look like something Halston would have done in 1984 in an alternate universe ^_^

I really don't get it yet. most of the outfits are extremely unflattering:cry:

if it was tailored differently i would have liked it. but the shapes are just awful.

and i'm sticking to my grace jones theory. :innocent:

^ I think the hats are, blatantly, inspired by A Flock of Seagulls (in more ways than one!)!

Hmm. At least he's experimenting. And I'm sure there's a method to the Jacobsonian madness....

did either of them ever have taste or style?

fashion today is ruled by how much press coverage and how much $$$$$$ you can make. style is not even part of the equation.

besides...anything either of them do will always be praised as genius and revolutionary by the press.

OMG I LOVE YOU.

I want to give you karma so badly but I can't

I seriously wish someone would experiment one season and switch out Miiucia and Marc's designs with someone else's and see the the reactions to each. This is hideous, unflattering and just plain ugly. But of course since it's MJ, it's bloody brilliant isn't it!

i actually liked quite a bit of the collection. :x

i do agree with a previous statement about how these pieces are more conceptual rather than made for the modern woman to wear.

it's just pieters, branquinho and vandevorst all over the place for me. I guess antwerp is 'so hot' right now. but you can't go wrong when ripping that all off, marc knows that.. so I guess this is going to be one of the major hits of the season...nice job.

I totally know what you mean by that. And this collection is leagues better than last spring. As you guys probably pointed out, he's on an experimental stage and that sort of gives him an excuse as to why I can't figure out his aesthetic. Maybe he's referencing the 1920's and 1930's again. And yeah, the shoes look like the chunks left after a wild Saturday night.

WTF is this???? Civil War Chic??? Or Last Temptation of Christ?? I can't even look at the rest of the collection.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually love this. Yes, I see a few Belgian influences, as well as all of the hideous accessories, as well as the finale metallic looks that have an ugliness I can only relate to Balenciaga's spring finale, but I think the whole collection is really wonderful.

Some TFSers may just say "psha! People only like it because it's MJ!" but I again insist that not everyone is blindly loyal to designers on name alone. For example, I happen to have a bipolar relationship to Marc's designs.

This collection really hits the spot for me. The ending dresses are sublime in their simplicity, and I want all of the long belted coats. The volume on most everything is exactly what I wanted before I knew I wanted it. The colors are a little drab, but the taste level is miles higher than Miuccia's most recent collection.

On the subject of "inspiration" of the collection...I see Bruno Pieters for the sausage halos, Chloé's patent boots of F/W 07, Prada's most recent men's collection for the metallic suits, MMM's shoulders, and YSL S/S 08's overall look.

This is terrible. I've tried looking at it all sorts of ways but it's just bad all around. Sure; design clothing to "evoke an emotion" be conceptual, whatever, but when you work in a medium the end result should serve the proper function. If you can't wear the clothing what use is it? If a painting is somehow made that it is unable to be hung what is the point?

This collection is only half-finished, he only half-accomplished something.
It would have been successful if he molded the designs to both fit his ideas and be wearable.

Yes, me too.

For example, I really didn't enjoy his S/S '08 collection and I said as much, vehemently and repeatedly.

I'm trying to like it. I like some of the coats, but on the whole, this is just...too grown up for me? A bit too toned down? I think that's what it is.

I liked Marc much better when he didn't try so hard to be avant garde.

This isn't him at all. If I didn't know it was a Marc Jacobs collection, I never would've thought it was a Marc Jacobs collection.

its mixed

the dresses in the end are straight up 70s karl Chloe , but the dropped crotched relaxed senior center pants are just nasty. Anyways marcs concern isnt the collection as much is the indicments he faces for paying bribes for the armory ,so he would have exclusivity so other designers couldnt use the place .

i kind of love it. it has a very depressing, grandmother kind of feel to it which i think has been the mood for alot of f/w 2008
