The Costume Institute Gala 2009: The Model as Muse

Natalia in that gorgeous pink Fortuny.

I'm in the minority with Boomer in that I think Blake looks good. Gorgeous color, love the sleek hair and makeup, sure the dress is too much but I suspect that a lot of the hatred has more to do with people just hating her and very little to do with her wearing what could be considered a standard Versace dress that countless others have worn before and not been ripped to shreds over.

Iman in that Donna Karan looks gorgeous. Alek looks absolutely stunning in that bright pink with the dark makeup. Donna Karan herself (she pretty much is her own muse anyway) looks great. Oddly enough I love what Kate Moss is wearing, and that's probably the first and last time I'll ever say that. Karen Elson could be wearing a potato sack and still look amazing. And from the neck up/back view I think Ashley O. looks the best she ever has. I kinda love Sasha's outfit. Iris looks incredible in that Givenchy.

Aggy looks a bit like Gene Hackman in drag in The Birdcage. I'm not getting the fuss over Gisele as the dress looks like a knockoff version of the ones Versace showed for spring. Lauren Hutton I'm disappointed by. She herself looks as good as ever, but I don't like what she's wearing at all, which is unusual. Rhianna looks absurd, overstyled, trying too hard, desperate for exposure...they all apply. Nadja, it pains me to say, doesn't look her best there.

Overall this is a pretty disappointing turnout, at least so far. Who knows, maybe the Style.com coverage will redeem the event tomorrow. And the whole Alaia thing is quite possibly the most petty b.s. I have ever heard. You're snubbed? Fine, be pissed, but asking some extremely high profile guests not to wear the dresses that would likely have outshined all the others at the event is just stupid. I mean, that would've been the ultimate revenge.

fashiontopface...the nypost is a tabloid...
read some of the pieces from the nytimes...it has the true story of why naomi, stephanie, azzedine, etc. weren't there...

Daria looks incredible. So effortless.

I don't like how people are going on about how this event lacked a lot of A-Listers... This is a fashion event thus the focus should be be on people who actually work in the industry, not which celebrities were/were not there.

^The Post may not be as highbrow as the NY Times, but it is definitely not considered a tabloid.

I must say that this year was little dissapointing, too many played it safe (read: Rachel Bilson) and then there were too many tacky outfits...

anyway here is my TOP 3

1. LEIGHTON MEESTER

she took a risk and she wore ridicilous outfit and she looked absolutely wonderful! she really did pull it off and had the most interesting look of that night. i was so happy to see her

2. ANJA RUBIK

her little dress with sequins was absolutely lovely, somehow it did bring disco chic to my mind. loved it!

3. EVA HERZOGOVA

lovely look. i like that she wore that girly dress and did put dark lipstick, it looks nice agains her pale skin.

Who looked nice?

KATE BOSWORTH and LIV TYLER

They both looked like they just came from old film and they both looked absolutely amazingly beautiful. Liv´s dress was amazing for her, great cut and great colour. kate looked flaslwess.

SASHA PIVOVAROVA

only she could wear that outfit. she is my favourite model and she owns unique sense of style, she looked wicked.

MARY-KATE OLSEN

oh, she and her messy hair. that dress she wore suited her perfectly. loved her look. Ashley was not bad eather, she was just looking bit boring even tough close-up pictures from her face were absolutely stunning.

Also Daria and Giselle both looked very stunning and sexy in their minidresses...ofcourse, with those freaking legs :woot:
Kirsten Dunst look was also nice, it was very kirtsen-ish.

one of the most absolutely worst outfits must have been madonnas outfit. it looked HORRIBLE! ew.
also there were some very tacky outfits like blake lively, eva mendes...:innocent:

i just have to add that Lauren Hutton looked fantastic, i wish that i could look like that when i am in her age!

agree completely.
just imagine if the trinity came looking absolutely stunning in his dresses. it would of been a slap to the face to whoever kicked him out. but by him/his creations not being there, it just caused people to completely forget about him.

I agree with both Zann and Spike. Sure it's not OK that Alaia was excluded from the exhibit, but...yeah...the Trinity walking in together, linked arms, all looking INCREDIBLE in Alaia would have been the ultimate in revenge and glamour.

Did Ricardo show up with anyone? Adriana was scheduled to show, but it looks like she didn't show (for some obvious reasons) did he show up with anyone else at all?

Sasha takes the cake...gorgeous.

Daria and Giselle are absolutely stunning, wearing model dresses works for them.

This year's gala is really subdued. I thought the whole point of this event was to dress outlandishly and go all out....I am unsatisfied!

No i mean the NY Post tells exactly why Karl didnt come but maybe also to pay tribute to Alaia?

no its better they didnt come cause ignoring something acting like it does not excist is the highest thing to do its like saying we are fashion royalty and they are snobs to Anna and her Team

Daria blew everyone out of the water. For the most part, everyone looked too tacky/sparkly/Lord and Taylor prom dress.

wasn't he scheduled to show up with Mariacarla [as well as possibly Adriana]? I hope he ended up taking her - they make a great pair!

Apparently, Galliano is supposed to be there, but he is not on the red carpet???? That's what he lives for, I thought.

Maybe Alaia did not ask them not to attend the evening, but just not to ear his creations while doing so. maybe it was the girls' decision to avoid it completely out of loyalty???

On the other hand, Versace seemed to dress a lot of people tonight: Gisele (understandable), Cindy, Claudia, Emma Roberts, Jessica Biel, Blake Lively... I am sure there are even more I missed.

I got a tweet from Women's Wear Daily saying that he arrived with Marion Cotillard. It said he was wearing a grey suit and hat. hmm
