US Vogue October 2016 : Lupita Nyong'o by Mario Testino

^I understand your curiosity in why people are collectively liking something you don't, but to give the impression that we're being insincere and just throwing Lupita a bone because she's a WOC is a very odd thing to say, and kinda offensive. We don't need a Vogue cover outreach program, and like you noted, members here are always very upfront about their opinions, so I think I can speak for everyone that when we praised this cover, is because we ACTUALLY think it's a great cover. A great photo, great styling, great subject, etc. No undercover social motives.

^^Well, I'm not sure saying that me posing the question is offensive is particularly productive. This is exactly what bugs me. You're inherently saying that by me questioning the quality of this image and questioning the exclusively gushing comments in this thread is wrong because she is a WOC and that that couldn't possibly play a part in it's appeal. I was curious if it did play a part since I do not see the appeal of this cover from a strictly aesthetic point of view. You're proving my point that somehow characters like Lupita are above criticism because of what she represents. I respect that you and others like this cover. I really do. I just wanted to know why! That's a fair question and a far more interesting one to know why someone likes something instead of a thread full of "I love it." And if you're saying that there are no undercover social motives in your liking of this cover, then great! I respect that and appreciate that opinion and am glad that you expressed that. You answered my original question.

This whole discussion I started is simply to provoke intelligent and critical discourse. Let's not play the offensive card. Having a dialogue of differing opinions is important so long as each side is able to articulate themselves thoughtfully and respectfully. Everybody leaves learning something when questions are posed and you get to the bottom of things. I do not like this internet culture that anyone who disagrees with or questions the collective agenda is "problematic" and "offensive" by doing so.

I'm speechless! This is so beautiful Still can't believe it was shot by Testino

But you were the one that provided the WOC justification for the gushing comments simply because you did not like the image. That's what people are objecting to, It's fair to dislike the image, It's fair to deride and question the fact that people seem to be unanimous in their love for the cover, but to imply that only happens because of her race is basically accusing people of having a lower set of standards to measure the worth of this cover, that can indeed be construed as offensive.

Personally I do not even like Lupita, she leaves me cold, but i think it's a wonderful cover and a brilliant ed, there is something very sophisticated about it. The balance is just right. Plus Lupita looks like a breathing person, Vogue US specialises in Stepford Wives, the fact that they decided on something so different took everyone by surprised

This sounds like your initial post was shaped in some analytical, thoughtful form that welcomed explanations, which again, is more your usual style. And it wasn't. It was much like everyone's initial, mindless "yay!" reaction "short neck, gross dress, not surprised everyone's blindly falling over though!".. more snarky category (no judging, I enjoy these quick ones too). A discussion was started only because HeatherAnne brought this type of lazy antagonism to light, to which you insisted: it's only due to a domino effect of gushing over something, beyond capacity of thoughtful criticism. Far from respectful.. ideally you stimulate the thoughtful and respectful debate you want to see by improving quality instead of downgrading with basic fallacies and assumptions on something relative such as where taste is based on, but no offense taken, thankfully members that know you have tried to fix this a bit and we can move on.

Bottom line is, backgrounds vary here, some of us are just not wired yet to an oversimplified system of minority recognition or pedantic approach to equality... I for one do not think of America's 1272 racial challenges when I see this cover and applaud it as a reaction to that. I leave that to Americans. So not true in my case.

ALL of what MulletProof said

I really respect that you've tried to give us more context to your post instead of resorting to low blows and attacks and some of the BS that goes on where moderators have to jump in because everyone is being ridiculous.

We could use more discussions like this on tFS. I really enjoyed the last few pages personally.

I think we can all cut you a break and stop quoting you now though

*Hell I goofed and called Lupita an African American, even though I know she's Kenyan. Nobody's posts are without fault around here.

Anyway, anxious to see the review! Although personally speaking I'll be getting this regardless of whatever else they're pushing inside.

I'll have the review up later but would it surprise anyone that Karlie K, Anna E, and Jake Gyllenhaal are in the issue?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

So excited!!! And with Rianne and Anna!! This better be good.

Another issue with no single girl edits... these reviews always leave my head spinning.

It's really hard to remember edits when you have at least a couple models and/or celebs in them, isn't it? And they have so many of these multi eds. Wish they'd do more cinematic stories with Lindbergh and a single model (remember those beautiful eds with Fei Fei, the one with Doutzen and Liev Shriber, Daria and David Strathairn?)

Ooh Guinevere and Tim Walker!

Lupita is just a star

I have to admit I was a bit surprised when I heard she was on the cover yet again. While I do love her, three covers seems a bit much when we have people like Viola Davis without any yet. But I honestly can't fault this after seeing the cover - probabaly their best cover and story in years.

 Love your reviews! thank you.

I´m looking forward to Rianne. But I´m tired of Grace in every issue as I don´t even like her as I do Trentini.

The Rianne/Anna/Boyd editorial might sound promising, but I'm not a fan of McLellan.

And of course Wintour would add boring Alison Williams to an editorial with another eternally boring favorite of hers, Jessica Biel.

I might be one of the very few people who doesn't like the cover. Lupita is a charming lady, but certainly it is not enough to like a magazine. It seems so easy to make people feel happy by simply creating an illusion of diversity

Even if the cover (story) are spell binding, the review still seems chaotic and unfocused. Why so much Sara Moon(Whoo)ves? I know US Vogue is boring, but c'mon she's not the wildcard you pull out of your styling stable when the chips are down. Silly Anna :ninja:.

here we go again

what? I typed my message a day ago and just got a chance to send it:lol:. Just saw the review, sounds boring to death, Karlie, Karlie, Karlie, Grace...I can not see them anymore. Curious to see my lovely Rianne and Anna though
