Vogue Paris October 2010 : Lara Stone by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

lol all i can think about looking at crystals ed is if any of the food got on the clothes

From a French historical perspective, it is very relevant and not meant to be tacky.
As I explain in my recent post her obvious sexual way of eating, the obscene amount of food and her fuller figure is exactly what is required for this ed. La Grande Bouffe was an outrageous and shocking movie from 1973. France remembers it well and this is a tribute to it. Might not have the shocking factor that it used t have though, as we now live in a "societe de consommation".

Thank you very much for explaining the inspiration for "Festin." I absolutely love it when editorials refer to films or other pop cultural media. I also see a lot of Bacchus in this editorial, who, of course, is the original inspiration for the entire decadent, Bacchanal concept. Also, there is no denying the Caligula reference.

The whole Bacchanal decadence theme seems to run throughout the entire issue. It is evident in the "Le Bal Masque" editorial, obviously, and also in "The Party" and "Visions," particularly in the image in which Eniko is regurgitating the pills. The neon hallucinogenic aspect of "Visions" is quite interesting. It's makes the viewer feel as if they are on LSD while looking at the images. I think the editorial is definitely more of an artistic spread than a fashion editorial, however. Eniko wears the same jacket throughout, and all of the images are taken from the chest up. It's definitely visually fascinating, regardless.

For the most part, I really like all of the editorials in this issue. The Phantom of the Opera-meets-Kiss aesthetic in "Le Bal Masque" is fantastic, and the casting could not have been better. I am so happy to see Mariacarla back in VP, and it is lovely to see that Freja has become a new favorite. She always delivers and gives an extra oomph to every image she is featured in. Also, I am glad Carine has taken a liking to Daphne Groeneveld. She has a presence that makes her stand out in every photo she is in, even when she is standing next to a seasoned veteran like Mariacarla. Her face is just so captivating and versatile. I am very much looking forward to seeing her cover for November.

The only editorial I am not particularly fond of in this issue is "The Party." It just seems out of place, like something that would appear in U.S. Vogue, not Vogue Paris.

Though we have not seen all of the editorials yet (Freja's and Iselin's look VERY promising), I must say that "Festin" is my favorite editorial in the issue so far, with "Le Bal Masque" following as a close second. I just love the in-your-face excess of both of them. No one does depravity better than VP, and these two editorials are certainly evidence why. Plus, I absolutely LOVE Crystal's hair and make-up in "Festin." I think she looks beyond stunning when she has the wavy hair and thicker brows. She is very Ava Gardner-esque here. I really am happy that Carine has been using her a lot. My fingers have been crossed for months that she will capitalize on her newfound popularity and grab a cover, and maybe, if Carine continues to feature her heavily in the magazine as she has done recently, Crystal will land a cover early next year. I would be elated.

I see no point in the Festin ed. Totally unflattering to the point of making the clothes look grotesquely digusting.

Would like to have seen more of Anja. Unfortunately the only editorial that they used her, was bit of a mess.

Actually I really like "The Party" as well as "Visions" with Eniko, I'm sure it will look much better in print.
I have two mixed feelings about "Festin" by Terry, I think it's terrible but very attractive, I love and hate it at the same time.
"Think Punk" is so bad, I hate it, Freja looks bit like Agyness Deyn here.
The only editorial I LOVE here is the one with Lara Stone by Steven Klein.

I hate to say it but I'm disappointed with this issue, I can't believe Carine didn't make an editorial(s) with all the super/top models : Kate, Naomi, Daria, Raquel, Cindy, Christy, Claudia, Eva... I would be happy if there were these models in the eds instead of them who are actually.

someone asked a few pages back about the lace mask used on the cover, it's by Philip Treacy :)

Black boudin is very good in taste and for your health, dear.

you do not know, either, how to do say "boudin" in english ...
;)

i didn't get my copy ... and i'm gonna call tomorrow.
* anyway.

the issue is very big. and the supplement is very GOOD !!!
:heart::heart: love the supplement.
there's a lot of Roitfeld era. I'm sad are not included, but any page is folded (???) !!! That is great.

The editorials are all based on previous images of Vogue Paris (and I guess there are other influences, like La Grande Bouffe ...).
The Festin was "influenced" by a Bourdin picture. But Food is something that has interested a lot of photographers (Newton included).

There's no En Zoom or something, but a big spread called "Bal Masqué" (not the editorial) ... Based on En Vogue Zoom ...
I don't know why the theme "Excess" was appropriate. I think under Joan JB (??) it was said to be intellectual.

Anyway, it's full of ads (and i'm gonna take them off, i think).

Oh and there's a sort of Numéro Anniversary composition.
It's weird coz the ad are located in the mgazine, as in this Anniversary thing.
Dior, Estée Lauder, Lancôme, Gucci etc.
just the same order (almost) than the ad campain board ...
:shock::ninja:

I like all the editorials. probably not Punk ... I don't know ...
Vogue is not very punk, even chic ... I don't know, except under Carine Roitfeld (who did a beautiful story with a young girl, illustrating the black dress theme ... nice by hedi slimane ... with white/black chic shoes for kids).

:ninja:

"Festin" is a take on a famous controversial French ( Franco/Italian) film LA GRANDE BOUFFE that shook France in 1973. It is very relevant as the VP headline is "90 years of excess" :)
It depicted obscene banquets scenes mixed with sex intercourse. 2 indulgences that were frowned upon at the time:) maybe not so much now though. Times have changed!
I was thinking about this movie but couldn't come up with the name. Thanks for mentioning it, and I totally agree with you.

The whole issue can be previewed here.

My first impression is that this is not a great anniversary issue.

Then I don't understand why Patrick Demarchelier, and mainly Mario Testino, are not featured in this issue, since Mario was a key photographer who clearly defined the first 8 years of Carine's era.

A positive sign is the new design, clear and simple, which I think is a measure to distance themselves from the previous formula (which I will miss) that was already being widely copied by other magazines, including the brazen UK Harper's Bazaar.

Does anyone know why are they celebrating this anniversary, when we're only 10 years of the 100th anniversary? is it possible that within 10 years Carine will not be doing the magazine?

Only 10 years? 10 years is quite some time really.

Most magazines celebrate most birthday's ending in an '0', and occasionally even those ending in a '5'. I'd find it odd if they'd chosen to sail through the 90 years mark without an anniversary issue.

To me, the written content looks ten times more interesting than the fashion shoots. As there's no shortage of features, I can't complain - but I will be flicking past the editorials to get to those good parts.

They really don't do anything for me at all - even if we tie them to their references, I still feel like I'm looking at an homage to the past nine months of Vogue Paris, rather than the inspiration offered by ninety years.

But in such a huge issue, there's bound to be plenty of other things to keep me happy.

I agree. It's a nice pic. But, I don't see what's "epic" or "stunning" about it.
And I'm sick of anything having to do with Lara and her boobs.

That's my problem... it is undoubtedly a striking and photographically well executed photo; but really, have we not had enough of topless Lara Stone by now?

I still feel like I'm looking at an homage to the past nine months of Vogue Paris, rather than the inspiration offered by ninety years.
agreed. that's why i find this issue so disappointing editorial-wise, even though bal masqué is great.
and i know they are necessary, but GOD i hate all these ads. they kinda ruin the appeal of the magazine's layout for me. the en vogue section is all broken(?) by them...

Then I don't understand why Patrick Demarchelier, and mainly Mario Testino, are not featured in this issue, since Mario was a key photographer who clearly defined the first 8 years of Carine's era.

100% agree.
i think it is official that Carine and Mario Testino links are broken ...
i have to check but he is in the supplement.
* Demarchelier still works for VP, though ... so
I am surprised there are not more stylists. like Franceline Prat ! Claire Dhelens ! M.A. Sauvé ! Anjte Winter ! or any other older stylists ...
Ann Catherine Lacroix ! Jessica Miller ! and more ...

I think this issue is stamped with Carine Roitfeld (as the last anniversary issue was stamped with an "intellectual" and still "very elitist" vision - it was for 75th Anniversary).
the story of Vogue Paris has started last year, i believe with the covers exhibition (and catalogue - so no need to reprint them all in this tome) for the CR team.
and CR team started 10 years ago @ Vogue FR ...
and indeed it's very like the last past 3 years (?????) ... The I&V editorial in this issue is the miror of this very down (poor up) last - yeah - 4 yrs ....
even the creativity of I&V in Vogue FR is not there ...
(but they are printing their book, right ?) ...

I think the work of researches (if there's been any) is lost between all the ad !!!
it's disgusting !

in the supplement, when it's not shot under CR reign, most pictures come from Bourdin and/or Newton (one for each : CV Wangeheim, La Chapelle, Lindbergh, Feurer etc.).
And the rest is Sorrenti, Testino, Richardson, Demarchelier ...
they included 6 double pages (3 papers) unfolded (?? - so you need to buy two !)

Their last anniversary issue came out to celebrate their 75th Anniversary, and honestly I don't see Carine doing Paris Vogue in 10 years... and with this issue she decided to anticipate the 'event' before her withdrawal... Since the departure of Fabien Baron and more recently of Marie-Amélie Sauvé, the magazine's content declined in quality, at this moment everybody is tired of the same boring stories that Carine and Emanuele present every month. Paris Vogue needs urgently of new blood, new stylists, like Camila Nickerson, Melanie Ward or Panos! Think about it!
