Christian Dior F/W 05.06 Paris

Looking back, Galliano had so many "lives" at Dior and yet, he managed everytime to make people excited, to create conversation and above all, to have a commercial success!
It's so true!

It's amazing looking back at his tenure and see these distinct phases, and even more incredible is that while these "lives" are each very different, Galliano was able to make each feel quintessentially Dior.

The early Dior days of the very vintage collections, then the turning point with the Matrix collection that ushered in the very street, MTV Dior, and then it was the Empress Josephine/Edie Sedgwick Couture collection of 2005 gave us this new phase of Dior - the very pretty and sweet, Miss Dior era. And all of them were great! It really was the final phase that I didn't care for - after the Madame Butterfly show, things went downhill pretty quickly...the very stilted, rainbow satin era of incessant New Look revivals.

This particular Miss Dior phase was definitely a very commercial era for the house, but Galliano really had a knack of imbuing "commercial" clothes with real desirability and charm and playfulness. There's so much to love in this collection - gorgeous coats, fabulous bags, great styling - how chic is the look of the beret, the oversized sweater and those boots....THOSE BOOTS! Ugh! Some of my favorite shoes ever designed, both the croc tall boots and the laced up ones, too. Just so gorgeous.

This was a great period of Dior...a fresh era with some really memorable shows...this one, the Barbie show of Spring 2005 and probably my favorite of this era - the nude/black lace show of Spring 2006. LOVE!
