It is easy to harp on Frida's lack of fashion direction as the brand has all but given up on sustaining its RTW identity, but lest not forget that Tom Ford's Gucci was never a fountain of originality to begin with. Much of Gucci's past success (for RTW) comes from knowing how to style the looks to fit the mood of the season, and that's what's happened with this season's Gucci too.
While I do agree that Frida ripped off Balenciaga a tad too soon to be acceptable, I still love this collection especially after the disaster that was SS08. Yes, from an integrity standpoint it seems like a desperate attempt to wow the Olsens, but the Olsens have never looked this good. The only thing I could do without is the fur. Those pants! I don't think Cavalli can cut a pair like that. That's a Gucci tradition. I also don't think Cavalli's narrative carries with it any dark mystique, but I felt plenty of it coming from Gucci.
The shoes are rarely disappointments at Gucci and this season is no exception. The studded boots are pretty bad ***--better than Louboutin, even.
