I'm going to London next week but only for 4 days, so I don't have a lot of time for shopping because a friend who is coming has never been to London and we have to show him the city. I'm more interested in cheap vintage (or with reasonable price) than in High street.
I've read this thread and in I'll put in my list Portobello in friday or saturday (last time I went there a wrong day and I was a bit dissapointed), then some shops near Brick Lane and Petticoat Lane market. But any advice will be welcomed
As much as I agree with Meg about the contrived punk shops in camden, the 2 to 10 pound shop (which has an actual name, that I'll never remember), in the stables is pretty legendary. Its basically a Rokit outlet shop, with all the things that have been rejected from the shop on the high st (which IMO is ridiculously overpriced), which means you do have to wade through a bit of rubbish but there are some gems. Often too, the same dress as from the main shop with perhaps a very slightly different design will be in there for like 1/3 of the price.
Also in Camden is a tiny little shop I only just discovered, called Betty's or something. It's just before the stables and used to only sell vintage (and some weird vintage inspired) accessories, but it's branching out into clothes. Thats great because it means they have a really small, but well chosen selection and you don't have to search for anything. In most vintage shops, I usually find that means the garments can be a little pricey but of this place it's completely untrue, with more reasonable prices than I've found in Rokit, Beyond Retro or any of the large shops. A few weeks ago I bought a beautiful grey/silver silk (great quality too, as my seamstress friend pointed out) shift dress for £12. To top it all off, the man who runs it was lovely and gave us all a few quid of everything we bought.
In terms of Brick Lane, I would mention the pound bin in Beyond Retro but I haven't been for so long I don't even know whether it exists, let alone is as fantastic as it first was. Also, its not cheap, but theres a shop called The Lazy Ones which is just left off Brick Lane if you were walking in the Bethnal Green direction. It can get forgotten, but the selection is really lovely and so is, again, the bloke who runs it. He made me a bag with a specific design, because they hadn't got it!
Oooh god, sorry for going on so long! But really, up until about 6 months or so ago cheap vintage was a bit of an obsession

Hope some of it helps!
