Here's a Japanese article about the reactions from Japanese people to the news. Some of the comments mentioned in the article are "I don't see what's wrong with the images." "I simply find those images beautiful." "Stealing culture, huh? As Japanese, I don't feel any discomfort looking at the pictures." "The ones who are criticizing those images are the ones who are discriminating."
And I feel pretty much the same. I only see cultural appreciation, not cultural appropriation(God, I hate this term). As long as our culture is not portrayed in a derogatory way, which quite clearly isn't in this case, I'm totally fine with it, as probably are 99% of other Japanese people. It also annoys me that most people complaining are not even Japanese. There was a similar incident a little while back, and an overwhelming majority of the reactions toward the news here was anger at the so-called "protesters".

We have very strict rules regarding access police records.
It's only extremely small companies that don't do it. And if you're caught in a lie, don't disclose a conviction, even for a misdemeanor, your new job is up in smoke. (I always make sure the background check is complete before I quit my old job, just because I've seen this happen to so many people.) This is also true if you can't prove you have the degrees you say you have. I've personally known people who've been let go for these reasons. Also someone who decided to 'combine' two different jobs on her resume to (in her mind) make her employment history look better. I told her not to do it, she didn't listen, she got fired from the job she'd just been hired for. So, kids, no matter what you see public figures doing, lying is just a bad idea
