Interview September 2008 : Kate Moss by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott

All of her covers are becoming a huge blur, imo...
She almost always looks great..
but she's just so tired these days...
I wish she were more selective...

I can't wait to see Kates ed inside this issue. The picture allready posted looks amazing, thanks for posting

For whatever reason other more eloquent folks are saying exactly what's on my mind when it comes to certain magazines these days.

The Imagist on the latest Interview:

Cool, eye-catching cover but I am not impressed by the choice of cover model, photographer or content subjects so far. Yawn.

i love TI and often go overthere ...
but sorry to say : "yeah, and what's new under the sun ?" ... these words bring nothing  ...

What do you want for a first issue of a revamp (well-known-famous) magazine ?!
a unkwnw guy coming from the (now mainstream) myspace/blogosphere or whatever shooted by his gf in Peru wearing his harlem bff's collection ?!

I think Kate is great for a magazine that is the son of Mr. Warhol ...

and if this itw of Kosuth and Margiela is not a rumor .... I can tell you I'm one of those who's f***ing excited and don't feel ashame about it !

This is what covers of fashion magazines should look like. NO annoying text. No pimping of celebrity culture. Just one strong shot with the title of the publication.

It's more fashion and less low brow that way ;)
I agree! I wish more fashion magazines would stick to the single photograph-title of magazine idea for the cover!

Sometimes Interview magazine does free subscription. I got one for like 2 years..

To me you've missed the point: all he asserts is that as a first issue revamp it hits, for the most part, predictable notes. However specific and appropriate the choice of cover model and/or photographer (and the Pilati etc.) may be the fact is that it's been generally done somany times before the effect is muted. No one's asking for a genius but the idea isn't a stretch of any kind. I hardly know a darn thing about fashion photography but from reading tFS for a few months I could have come up with the same combo and then worked in the Warhol idea from a quick look at a Wiki article or two . (Maybe tFS members are just that good?)

As for the offered alternative that is a false dilemma unless you're honestly saying that the entire fashion photography industry is split between M&M/I&V/Testino/Miesel-types and guerrilla photographers with a MySpace portfolio. If so I suggest people worry less about finding fresh model faces and get obsessive about photographers before the sector collapses ;).

There's nothing wrong with finding things to get excited about this issue. But TI offers a legitimate, valid perspective. And it's not as if fashion magazines are enjoying the kind of robust sales to defang it.

that's gorge! i'm surprised to see her on the cover of interview, though. . .

why are you surprised? fabien Baron now owns interview and he is the art director for Calvin ad's, he has worked with kate for years, one of the first people to work with her. Interview's June and luly issues were a soft re launches, september is the big one, I'm sure Fabien called kate and asked her to do it.

no i think i got it right ...
with your relecture i'm sure about it ...
all is saying is déjà entendu ... we see always the same things in every magazines ... blablabla ...so what ? where's the analysis ?!
i'm not going on TI to read what i can think about by myself ... I go overthere to see (more than read) interesting things ....
I, myself, was disappointed by his review of the magazine .... 2 or 3 quotes from WWD don't make everything ....

i'm seriously thinking this, yes ...
search a thread i opened a while ago ... about who could be the new Meisel or something ...
and just go through the ad campains threads ... you'll see by yourself ...
i already complained about these photog' and i'm always happy when a fresh photog' is getting the cover ... but it's not often !

Kate is predictable because she's a warholesque icon ... and because
[Baron] has worked with kate for years, one of the first people to work with her.(...)september is the big one, I'm sure Fabien called kate and asked her to do it.

but of course, now, you can hide all those "oh-so-bad-commercial-mainstream" magazines and buy some stuff like Crash, Preen etc. .... that are very good, for sure .... but that i don't often hear about on TI - by the way
..... :ninja:

always hated those kind of arguments ...
you could, but you didn't ...

but complaining about the new revamped ITW is, I'm sure, the Hype thing to do ....
:innocent: until i see it, i won't !

Brandt Publications... Peter Brandt is the owner of Interveiw. Fabien Baron is the Editorial Director along with Glenn O'Brien.

we see always the same things in every magazines ... blablabla ...so what ?

That's not what I thought or how I interpreted TI's post. My being underwhelmed by some parts of the new Interview issue is specifically because it is a relaunch, a revamp, supposedly offering something new or fresh or...something. But it doesn't translate fully into the results. I'm sorry you hate the "I coulda done that" arguments but seriously -- in this case, don't you think it's really transparent?? It's M&M and Kate Moss. I'm not saying I would have come up with the same set idea and choose the same picture but just getting those two together was a no-brainer -- and only because editors use the same people over and over again. (Therefore I'm not trying to imply I'm some kind of fashion guru.)

I'll just agree to disagree on this point since we're coming at it from two different directions.

If there really are no other photographers besides those on the usual list (and no other models, apparently) then I'll take that as a valid point. I find it hard to believe, and part of the problem may be people looking for the "new Miesel" (the way people are always looking for the new "Kate Moss" or "Naomi C" -- a futile endeavour) but like I said, it's not my area of expertise^_^.

I'm just sincerely trying to share my opinion. I haven't written off the entire issue only expressed how I reacted to the cover and content shown so far, like everyone else here, supported by a little quote from TI. I don't know who "Hype" :p is and I never made any comments at all about mainstream vs. whatever. If I'm hiding any of my reading material the romance will be the first thing to go.
