Lindsay Lohan plans to spend her stint under house arrest doing lots of painting ... reading ... and relaxing at her townhouse by the beach -- exactly the kind of hard time the judge intended.
Sources close to the actress tell us ... Lohan is looking at her confinement as a "time to relax, focus on her recovery and figure out her new game plan for her life and career."
Before she started to serve her time -- Lohan stocked up on art canvases so she can paint to release the stress.
We're told Lohan also has a stack of scripts she intends to read -- so she can decide on her next project.
Lohan is confident she will be released from house arrest before her birthday on July 2nd -- and we're told she's already making plans for a sober celebration.
No wonder she was smiling yesterday.

Lindsay Lohan is making the most of her time under house arrest by reading scripts ... and endorsing a line of electronic cigarettes!
A company called Blu Cigs sent around the posed pics today, saying Lindsay "is determined to better her career and her health and has started using Blu Cigs as a deterrent to lighting up."

With an electronic monitoring bracelet strapped around her ankle, Lindsay Lohan served her second day under house arrest suffering on her roof ... in the warm California sun.
Lohan is currently shacked up at her swanky townhouse in Venice, CA -- where, from her roof, she can totally see the ocean.
Lindsay -- who's being punished for allegedly stealing a necklace -- is only expected to serve around 35 total days of hard time ... glorious, relaxing, court-ordered hard time.
don't these paid photo-ops count as a violation of the terms of her house arrest?
Lindsay Lohan settles suit over 2007 highway chase
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Lindsay Lohan has settled a lawsuit filed by a woman who was chased by the actress in a pre-dawn car pursuit in 2007.
Court records show Lohan settled the case Wednesday with Tracie Rice, who claimed she was traumatized and lost a well-paying job because of the incident, which resulted in one of Lohan's arrests for drunken driving.
No details of the settlement were released.
The case has been frequently delayed because of Lohan's ongoing legal troubles, which have included rehab and jail sentences. The 24-year-old actress surrendered on Thursday on a probation violation and is expected to serve 35 days on house arrest.
Lohan's civil attorney, Ed McPherson wrote in an email that the actress "is very pleased to put this unfortunate event behind her."
