US Vogue December 2022 : Jennifer Lopez by Annie Leibovitz

Got this in the mail today. Someone wrote my street number in red Sharpie on the front cover??

158 pp.

Review:

"Coming Clean"
Photographer: Dan Martensen
Stylist: Tabitha Simmons
Model: Abby Champion, Patrick Schwarzenegger in the Frisian Islands for "Lanserhof's brand of ascetic wellness"
The Frisian Islands as in the Dutch Frisian Islands?????????

first issue I have read cover to cover in a while, thoroughly enjoyed!

Natalia Vodianova never ceases to amaze me (and should have been the cover!). ThejLo write up was also a good read (Refreshing it wasn’t premised on launching a makeup line or anything like that)

^^^ Yes-- surprisingly solid issue. Anna finally remembers the Vogue of the 2000s and offers an issue with a consistent , confident mood that pulses from beginning to end. Who’d have thunk the return of classic American Vogue would feel and look so fresh, so clean (…even the art direction looks so light and so seamless, even soothing…)

Besides shooting Jennifer’s Story, Annie's “Lost and Found” with Natalia and her sister Jenna is the best imagery of the issue: So warm and so alive in all its simplicity. Samira should take note on how to showcase raw/real/accessible women for her Bazaar.

The best story is Dan Martensen’s “Coming Clean”. It’s his usual effortlessly elegant mood that he blesses Vogue Living Nederland with. And it’s also what made Anna’s Vogue such a commercial standout in the 2000s: Simple, strong and sensual.

It’s only 164 pages compared to Edward’s 354 pages. But it’s the perfect example of quality over quantity. (...To bad it'll be back to the usual SM-pandering come the January issue.)

In the editors letter Anna says that the next issue will be winter and combined January and February issue

During a tumultuous childhood in Russia, Natalia Vodianova and her youngest sister, Jenna, were separated by adoption. Two decades later, DNA testing brought about a grateful, unexpected reunion.

Nothing is exciting as usual for decades, this magazine isn't even the shadow of its former self. It's a bunch of nothing stories piled together.
- nepo child models and influencers
- boring interviews
- diverse models that are mostly crappy but hey let's check every box coz it's trendy and nice to have ''representation'' and quotas without trying to involve them more naturally and organically but to also maintain certain standards of excellence for high fashion modeling without losing identity and new beauty features and ethnicities
- the cover subjects are ok-ish but not terribly exciting
- and the huge photographers vanished: Meisel, Testino, Demarchelier, Weber, Lindbergh, Lubomirski, Mert & Alas and therefore only the lame Leibovitz remains and then they add some bad newcomers such as Tyler Mitchell and they call it a day. NOPE, sorry Anna.

A nice enough cover, will always approve of Jennifer Lopez fronting Vogue and I love how old-school American Vogue this is compared to previous covers throughout 2022. However, it's all just a little too late now... as I'm now at the stage in which I am officially over US Vogue.

I will admit the content isn't bad, very old-school Vogue once again but still, nevertheless, a total non-event.

Consider that I don't care for the cover subject. I enjoy this issue a lot.

Not fond of the cover but I like Jennifer ed. She works in every picture. It's a classic combination of Vogue US by Annie.

But the highlight of this issue for me is Dan Martensen. I love when Vogue US pairs models with celebrities. It's their classic combo that never goes out of style. His editorial just feels so laid back, effortless chic. For once Tabitha's styling makes sense. I'm ready for Dan to become a Vogue US regular. His photography is what Anna needs right now for her magazine.

Natalia and her sister's pictures are also nice. Wish it was longer.

Overall, great issue. Very cohesive from fashion content to writing content. It was a pleasant read. A great way to close a year.

I don't like the pictures that much, but i'm intrigued by the story....

And there are some very nice shots by Dan Martensen...

I like the editorial with Abby and Patrick (though it reminds me of the one with Josephine Skriver and her boyfriend from few years ago in Elle Italia: Josephine Skriver).

There’s also an editorial by Martin Parr styled by Tabitha Simmons. No models, just clothers and accesories placed on diverse sets. Very Parr’s style.

I think this will be the shared content because it also appears on British Vogue.

The 6th photo could be a great cover too. Angelina Jolie/Christy Turlington vibe.
