Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2009

And to add - Not only VS is in competition with themselves every year, they want to keep the TV executives happy as well. VS will not go back to their old format - the format that was considered "too sexy", and almost banned from "free TV". The new entertainment atmosphere VS has created around their fashion shows reaches out to a larger audience. And that means it will generate MORE money for all parties involved. VSFS is more than a fashion show. Its a all-in-one entertainment industry including celebs, mini concerts, etc... all can enjoy something from it. VS doesn't cater to the fashion purest anymore.

ugh this wait is killing me. viewing that snippet from FTV, it looks like Marisa's walk has NOT improved.

^ it's improved ONLY when filmed from the front (ex 2008 dangerous segment)

VS has changed its target and its original focus: the UNDERWEAR.
It is true that their lines make way more money and attract attention than before. The PINK line targets college students and they all go crazy for it, because its fun and practical. The very sexy line is sexy indeed, but it seems like the company has shifted away from its general purpose: to sell wearable underwear!
The shows are spectacular indeed, but in the past two years, they are nothing like cabaret shows( KK compared VS show to a cabaret show several years ago). They are way over the top, circus-like. I do watch the shows and i do like their catalogues, but if i had to spend a lot of money on a bra (some of VS bras are so expensive!!!) Id go to LA PERLA. At least they know how to make money and still be a top lingerie company, while sticking to their original line. Not all lingerie company could be La Perla, and that is why their are #1, even though they are expensive and their fashion shows are compelling and sexy to watch,
VS relies on over the top sexuality (kisses, smooches, booty dances), as opposed to natural sexapil, which only certain VS models in the past possesed.

They have to rely on that over the top, cutesy sexuality, because their target audience has expanded to include young teenage girls. To please masses of these girls and of course boys, they have to make it more entertaining. Us fashion folks are not on the top of their list to please anymore, they are making money selling to this new group. I know we all don't like it, but its not really for us, they are catering to them.

inka: But it's what VS has become. To do the kisses and smooches and booty dances. VS can't engage the average audience by sending down models who just stare coldly or even smile into the camera. They want their girls to interact and show their personalities and be alive. Unfortunately VS has moved on from the 2003-2006 period of just regular walks, it's all about the energy and hype and I'm all for it. It would be almost ridiculous to revert back to the average fashion show way of 2005. I would probably be bored.

as far as the lingerie stuff, I can't relate since I don't wear lingerie :)

lol sam12 and I just posted at the same time

:D

Hey I would be ecstatic if they reverted back to a show like 2003/2005, but it will never happen and many of the people watching today would probably get bored.

In the beginning that initial format of VS was such a success because you had all these beautiful models with awesome bodies walking in the smallest of lingerie. That is all. It was something new on tv, men loved it. But as the years progressed on and as sexuality/nudity has really become so widespread on tv/internet that a show like that does not appeal so much anymore to the common man, their ratings dropped and they had to change it somehow. So they made it more entertaining and appealing to a different group of people.

I think as it was mentioned several times already, the VS Show audience has dwindled since 2001; so the more money for all parties reasoning is completely void, unless this year it happens to reach over 12,000,000 viewers. More viewers mean more money per advertisement.

Lol. okay guys tnx fpr the comments. im just saying i prefer the regular, sexy lace lingerie in a show rather than plastic sticks popping out of their bras and panties..hahah
but, yeah you are right. i guess the people wouldnt enjoy a pure simple show today, after they have seen VS progress in such a way from one year to another.
its kind of sad though:(

Yes, it has been mentioned before how the audience has "dwindled". Yet, they're very persistent to reach out to the mainstream. So it not a matter of it being completely void, because thats their goal. :flower:

While the viewers have dwinleded, it could be due to it's not a new concept anymore. The reason it had so many viewers for the first few years were due to it was a new concept, and the fact that some of the bigger supermodels such as Tyra drew in an audience. But take into account that if they would have kept the show the way it was without those two factors, the show would have been canceled a long time ago. VS isn't only in charge of it getting bigger, and more extravagant, I can guarantee if they tried to produce a show like 2001-2003 CBS wouldn't even do it. Plus ratings while they have dropped (a bit) they seem to rise with the right guest and right cast of models. So just because viewers haven't tuned in is not a valid argument for people thinking the show is over extravagant. You have to take in many factors, there are millions of people that wouldn't watch a show like 2001-2003 nowadays at all.

As for the kisses and wiggling and etc, while it's annoying to some..it's entertaining to many others. I think Tyra was the start of all of it, while she goes on and on about how she was a great runway model...to most people she was a joke. VS was where she fit in, and I think the other girls, along with CBS, and VS saw that she sold and was entertaining to many when she did such things, so the other girls caught on...because it's all the girls doing it now..not just one or two.

Yes, but what im saying is that it doesnt suit al the girls. it suits some only.
for example ABB has such a sexy face, she doesnt need to do anything, she is naturaly sexy and charismatic. tyra is all about the show, it shuits her too. heidi, adriana, and karolina are the same.
but there are some girls that jsut dont fit in, especially with those kisses. maybe VS should regulate this somehow.
it gets boring when every girl out there stops and blows kisses. if only certain girls do it, then its more exicting. otherwise its too predictable.
i never saw gisele blowing any kisses and she still manages to grab the audience, becaus eshe has precense. it is the quality and status of the models that VS hires.

Yep, you can tell it's against their nature a lot of the time, lol. Miranda is probably the future of the show. A celeb-gf strutting around. It's just in her nature to be this way...it might be interesting enough if there are more celeb gfs, more romances between stars and models.

Otherwise, what are they going to do to up the interest? They tried big performers, they tried modeling competitions...they can't go the way of p*rn...because they can never be anywhere near as tantalizing as the real thing. That's why I think these kiss-blowing, ****-shaking stuff is going to fade....I mean, what is that compared to kinky p*rn?

The Victoria Secret Fashion Show is in fact not a fashion show or an infomercial, rather it is a spectacle. If fashion shows were of interest to the general population then they would be carried on television, and as of now, no broadcast or even basic cable outlet carries the New York, Paris or Milan shows, the media outlet that does follow the "real" fashion shows is on the satellite or digital channels, at least it is where I live. The overall audience for broadcast television has decreased, so the numbers for the VSFS may be attributable to that general decline. If CBS did not have faith in the show they would have canceled it or moved it to The WB, instead they hired one of the top musical acts, The Black-Eyed Peas, held it in NYC and custom built a stage at the Armory.

From what I have seen I am looking forward to the show, the BEPs brought great energy and the girls are vibing off it. That is what is key - pointing, waving, pinup girl posing, cheesy smiling and blowing kisses is not inherently bad, it is just bad when the girl is not feeling it and in that case, it looks contrived and those girls are better off playing it straight. I am not a mind reader, but that is what I suspect happened with Adriana Lima and Lara Stone last year.

Got this by e-mail, from victoriassecret.com.

It's a good teaser... can't wait till I see the show, may not be the best show, but got me curious.

Even though I've bashed the VS Show long enough, I actually can't wait to watch it so I can see a few of the models! Haha.

One more day, one more day, one more day!

Oh, and that long skirt thing Maryna is wearing really ruined her walk. Seems like her feet kept on getting caught on the train so she couldn't really walk correctly. Blah, what a waste of a perfectly good moment. Eheh.

=D

Does someone have a link to the video for that segment - Romantic Journey? The only segments that I have seen in full are the opening segment (which looks awesome) and the Enchanted Forest segment (which looks meh)? Thanks.

I don quite understand. I meant why is underwear ? At the minimum least they still make Fantasy Bra without the Fantasy Panties like 2000 ones
