Victoria's Secret models going high fashion!

Well - keep in mind that last season, NY wasn't on board at all with casting VS-type girls, and it wasn't until Milan and Paris started, that they appeared on the runways everywhere. So if Ale and KK are booking big shows already in NY this time around, I can't wait to see what they'll book in Milan and Paris! :D

The return of the curvier/commercial/VS model to HF has been a little underwhelming so far in terms of castings.

So far we've seen KK at Alexander Wang and Alessandra at Marc Jacobs. They both looked fantastic, but I'm curious to see how this plays out throughout the rest of the season.

Alessandra is definitely working for her HF cred and there's no doubt that she's separating herself from the pack.

I think that there are a few things at play, one is that these models are expensive, so most designers can't afford them. Also I think that the curvy / commercial trend is manifesting itself in other ways namely in the form of non-skeletal young'uns like Karlie, Jac, Frida, Joan, Lindsey Samantha and Barbara and their omni-presence on the runways and / or in print. Correct me if I am wrong but at this point in their careers Lily, Sasha, Snejana and Natasha had emaciated themselves to maintain their A-list status once their new girl freshness wore off; Anja eventually did but I think she actually went through a drought first.

In fairness to the American designers, high profile designers like Diane von Furstenburg, Carolina Herrera, Zac Posen and maybe Donna Karan would have a curvy / commercial girl or two in their casts, they seem to particularly like Arlenis Sosa. Also, for the FW 2010 season, the curvy / VS thing was only at three European shows - the directional Prada and Louis Vuitton and the Katie Grand connected Giles Deacon. Like the aforementioned American designers, Euro-designers like Gaultier and Galliano casts were not limited to waifs, so they were not jumping on the bandwagon.

ETA:
I think it will be interesting to see how things go later this week with the well-heeled designers like Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Donna Karan and Oscar de la Renta.

I think KK will be popping up more in NY since she still has good connections there it seems. I can't see Alessandra doing any other shows in NY. She'll probably do Giles in London and whatever shows Katie Grand is styling in Milan or Paris as Katie is the reason she's on the runway. I'm very curious about KK in Milan and Paris. I hope she goes there.:shifty: (Versace, Dolce, Fendi, Chanel, Dior please!) I'm also interested in the Prada casting this season. I don't think it's gonna beat last season.

NY castings are usually the up-and-coming girls. That's why I don't usually have problems with any of my faves skipping on NY.

EDIT: Hilary Rhoda seems to be doing well. But she does suit the American brands more than the European brands I suppose.

Yup re NY Castings. Milan and Paris should be interesting. I can't wait to see what KK and Ana BB book - hope she manages the likes of Dior and Galliano again, that'd be so amazing!

KK @ Versace would be awesome, am sure we shall see her at Ellie Saab though, unless shes just going to be a guest

KK definitely is riding high on this wave, but like I said, she never really left HF completely.

Adriana completely did, all she did was VS for a while and kept her Maybelline contract, but other than that we could've written her off as not returning to any other runway. it was only her unexpected appearance at Givenchy (before the Prada initiative) that there was a glimmer of hope.

But her appearance at FNO was somewhat of a letdown, she really was not working it as a model. I thought it was just the pics, but when I watched the show I saw it too. she seemed very lifeless. Compared to Gisele who was just fierce incarnated. And did you all see when KK got off the bus and whipped that dress's train around her as she posed? THAT's what I'm talking about, fierce!

So how are we all feeling about the castings this season in regards to the "sexy" girl being back? While designers have been claiming that curves are now in vogue, it doesn't seem to have translated well into casting more "commercial" girls.

Obviously Katie Grand is a huge proponent of this and her shows have a very eclectic mix, but as for the models themselves . . . KK has been doing extremely well booking a lot of shows (but she never really left HF).

Alessandra has done 1 show in each city, but I think that'll change in Paris. Marc Jacobs, Giles, and Dolce and Gabbana aren't too shabby.

^ No...but it's hardly the 'return of curves'. I mean, not that Ale is so curvy to begin with...but girls like her walking shows is still a major exception, and not more...normal or something. Unfortunately! I was looking forward to seeing more commercial girls on the runways this season.

Alessandra isn't curvy.:rofl: Abbey Lee is probably bigger than Alessandra.

KK's done well.:D Super pleased.^_^

Ale isn't curvy but she is one of the biggest commercial models around. So that means something.

So it seems also that Ale can be casted by People other than named Katie Grand : ))

who did the casting for Dolce & Gabbana? Ale looked absolutely amaaazing at that show! she's a perfect fit for the brand, imo! i'd love to see her in a campaign.

Anyone know which shows Katie Grand is styling? We should probably take note.

I am glad that Alessandra walked a non-Grand show. It was getting to a point where all of her HF runway was coming from Katie (LV, Giles x2, MJ) with the exemption of Prada. Still don't know how those 3 officially got that gig. I thought her and Izabel (Yay, Iza!) looked great. They didn't stand out but they looked good.

^

Marc Jacobs wasn't styled by Katie Grand, Alessandra was the only "commercial/sexy" girl in that entire show.

Katie Grand will be styling:

Loewe
LV
Ungaro (most likely)

^Anastasia Barbieri used to style for Ungaro, but i would probably assume Katie will now be taking on that role.
The ones i know of :

Louis Vuitton
Loewe
Topshop Unique
Giles (She mentioned she styles his shows for free, as a favor to him)
Prada (I'm unsure whether she still does, but she did)

Jesus. Did any of you all participate in the debate in Natasha Poly's thread? It was basically her versus everything Victoria's Secret. Major lol's. People really need to calm down.

It was refreshing to see Ale, and Iza at Dolce&Gabbana. They fit the brand so perfectly. They exuded sexiness without being over the top and tacky. It should have showed some people that yes, they can walk a normal fashion show without waving and kissing.

I just have a feeling that we are going to get the same flack from tFS'ers when the VSFS do their castings in the next few weeks. How their girl should not be cast because she's so much better than VSFS. It's annoying and it's getting so old.

....then, their models will be hired for the show and they will say that she deserves it, which is the prettiest, the most beautiful, which is better than any angelÇ:rolleyes: ... and blablablablkablablabalabla

the thing that made me laugh was "how obvious it was that Natasha was leading the other models in the finale"..umm..No she didn't. She was in the same exact line with 3 other girls! I love Natasha but her thread is getting too blind adoration sometimes! :D
