What to wear when you're a student

i wear a uniform to school, makes my life easy. I can save all my cute outfits for the weekend!!

i agree with an earlier post: look smart, FEEL smart.
so i don't dress any different than what i would normally wear, altho i would definitely dress down and go for a casual look.
however, i never do the sweats/pjs thing, i never wear it except at the gym and maybe for lounging around at home. i look sloppy, therefore i don't like the look of it, but it could be just me, because some people can pull it off and kudos to them
but yeah, regardless, when dressing for sch, comfort is key. wouldnt want to be trudging all those booksaround campus in heels or ruining your nice designer bags with heavy textbooks!
shopped around last year FOREVER to find a comfy nice looking pair of flat boots, finally found a black suede one. this year im out of sch,and anything goes!! yay!

Ok all this responses are fuss and feathers for me and it leads to a question I want to ask: WHY do you guys dress down or do not kare about your fashion in college or uni??? WHY?? I don't get it, I'm still in high skool

Ok, that answered my next question (how old are you?)!

Trust me, in two years time, you will understand. Youre at the age when dressing to impress your classmates is probably more important than the lessons themselves. I have approx 12 hours of lectures per week, some of them first thing in the morning. Now I'm guessing fellow university students would agree that we would far rather have the extra lie in (usually to recover from our hangovers) than wake up early to fuss and preen over ourselves.

Thats not to say that we don't dress up to go out on an evening because, if you do chose to apply to uni, you will understand that a big part of the experience is the social aspect, which alot of your money will go towards.

Maybe I mislead you before, I don't stroll into lectures wearing my pajamas (although thats something I have NEVER come across before?!). As I mentioned, I am a fashion student, so all the items in my wardrobe will have been selected carefully. I'm just sick of uneducated people assuming that I'm pretty much taking a degree in how to become fashionable. That's not even close. I have to study marketing, theory, buying, financial managment and computer aided design. Any time I have spare from revising or typing up assignments is used up eating, sleeping or, if I'm lucky, going out. Of course personal fashion is an interest, but for the four years I'm attending university, I want to enjoy the experience, not worry about whether my classmates will accept my wardrobe?! And most of them would agree.

Dodododo. I may just be a silly little high school student, but I do believe that presentation is important. And it really doesn't take any longer to put on a nice sweater than a hooded sweatshirt. And even trade the sweats for even a nice pair of jeans. It really shouldn't take too much more than a moment to choose an outfit...

agreed! It's not that we roll out of bed and race to class in our pjs. But when you have an exam that day, you're lucky if you had even a few hours of sleep the night before...(thank god for caffeine)

Too bad most students think studing through the night before exam day is a good idea.

See i think i'm opposite from most here. To me i just throw on a sweatshirt and sweatpants most of the time. I'm on my feet in my labs all day and staining all sorts of slides. So wearing something nice is just out of the question for me. Not all the time i dress down, but the majority is either sweatshirt and/or jeans/sweatpants.
Although i like look nice for exams. I might as well feel good about how i look when i walk out of physics crying every semster

I probably dress up a bit more than the other students at my school. I wear skinny jeans and a cute top most of the time, with a cardigan or jacket. Never wear sweats. I feel a lot better about myself when I think I look good. I swear, it affects my class participation!

I think there may be a misconception on what "rolling out of bed" is. ilaughead made the point that it takes the same time to put on a sweater/jeans as it does sweats, etc. I think that is what most of us are talking about. I wear something simple, such as a sweater/blouse with black pants or jeans. That is what "dressing down" is to me: simple outfits w/little to no accessories. I think many were confused by this. I never wear sweatpants because I feel sloppy and self-conscious in them.

If you have one class at night and live right across your class, by all means go all out and wear 4 inch stilettos...just that i wouldn't under my circumstances.

my clothes are an entity of there own, flowing from my hangers to the floor to my desk and some scattered around so it is always a mission to find something to wear but i do make an effort and people always notice so it perpetuates the cycle, i do like to please hahaha

Agreed Sometimes I want to look really nice, but when you get up at 6am to catch a train in the freezing cold and often pitch-black morning, the only thing that matters is finding something to wear FAST which hopefully won't have you crying by the end of the day

I often see girls in my class looking great, their make-up in perfect state and carefully thought-out outfits...but like you said, I'd probably give myself the pleasure of doing the same if it didn't take me an hour to get to school every day

Coming to the end of my first semester in college...

I've finally found that it's a lot easier in the morning if I just plan out my outfit the night before

It can be so hard to find comfortable shoes (other than sneakers and flats) that don't kill my feet though

I usually plan my outfits the night before as I would not have the time otherwise( my journey to campus takes approximately 1.5h).
My outfits quite casual, ie ballet flats, a well cut shirt or basic tee with black skinny pants/ jeans or straight cut denim jeans with my YSL oversized muse bag( which can fit all my books and junks perfectly). will accessorise with scarves or chunky bracelets if i feel like it.
I tried wearing whatever's in my closet without planning or anyting during the exam period but it turned out that i felt worse...so in my case I don't mind spending a little bit of time coordinating my outfits.

As students who are struggling financially (presumption on my part) how often do you guys purchase high end goods? Or do brands like Topshop, Zara etc. suffice for now?
