What to wear when you're a student

I myself cannot afford high-end stuff at all... if I ever get sth expensive, it's my parents who get me that (and even then, it's not like they ever buy me designer clothes).

For example, I got a dufflecoat recently which had been 199€, which I could have never bought myself.

But that happens once every two years or so... we're not rich.

See i think i'm opposite from most here. To me i just throw on a sweatshirt and sweatpants most of the time. I'm on my feet in my labs all day and staining all sorts of slides. So wearing something nice is just out of the question for me. Not all the time i dress down, but the majority is either sweatshirt and/or jeans/sweatpants.
Although i like look nice for exams. I might as well feel good about how i look when i walk out of physics crying every semster

Dude, yes! (Also, heh.) As an undergrad, I was fine with running across campus in 10 minutes wearing heels and a skirt, so I figured the same getup would be fine for lab, too. I remember my first day of working in a lab, I showed up in heeled boots and a blazer and everyone was like, "WTF?" Ha! After a few accidents involving bleach and other chemicals on my nice clothes, not to mention being on my feet all day in a cold room, I realized that jeans, a sweatshirt, and sneakers were the way to go. Now we all just stand around in our comfy shoes and pants and mock people who show up in fancy duds, because we're bitter old labrats.

I must admit, I'm a slob when it comes to school. It's pretty much whatever I find first in the mornings. Unless of course I have time but that's fairly rare for me since I like to sleep in.
Eventually it becomes less about coordinating and more about just wearing something comfortable. Planning outfits the night before is nice idea but I need to be studying instead, it's why I'm a student!

As students who are struggling financially (presumption on my part) how often do you guys purchase high end goods? Or do brands like Topshop, Zara etc. suffice for now?

I think this often depends on whether you are at high school, college or university. At high school I'd think nothing of spending £100+ on a pair of jeans (with my own money I must add, I'd never borrow off my parents for frivolous things), but now I'm at uni, my money has to cover my upkeep, this entailing food, study material, going out, toiletries...if I have any spare I will spend on clothing, but I just don't have the means to buy the things I would have done before.

Actually, I find that to be fairly true. I find myself spending less now that I'm in uni since I'm spending so much for tuition and rent and food as opposed to when I lived home. I just don't have the financial flexibility to buy as much clothing as I'd like.

I found that as I went to college, I have been wearing pants and dress shoes more often. I know this is going to sound weird to many people on this forum but I found myself feeling kinda 'old' buying pants and dress shoes for the first time just because I liked them fashionably and not actually because I was forced to (for a job interview, church, etc.)

For the first time in a while I actually wore something cute to classes today. Usually i'm in a pair of sneakers or flats, comfortable jeans/jogging pants, and a hoody or comfy sweater.

i normally go with a jeans/t-shirt combo...but since mostly all i do wear is tshirts, I have nice fitting ones that are quite smart. Most of the time I wear loafers just to look a little dressed up and on breezy days i'll throw a scarf on. Like cheepmunk said above, if i'm gonna be in a lab, i'll go slobby because its just safer that way . In terms of high end clothing...my most expensive piece is a winter jacket that I needed (had to be waterproof and all coz of all the damn rain in the wintertime)...other than that, the most I've spent is $50 on my rock and republics (on sale, of course). I too have to support myself so I have to be a little thrifty heh B)

I wear exactly what I wear the rest of the time pretty much. I'm not a very casual person, I hardly ever wear hoodies or track pants. Then again, I also never wear heels, I'm really tall so I don't need them, also, I just prefer flats. Most days for me are skinnies/straight leg jeans, sweaters, shirts, cardigans, always ballet flats, and I always wear unique/chunky jewellery. Now that it is getting really hot I am also starting to wear tailored shorts and girly/funky skirts with plain tops and cool jewellery. I do a lot of layering, just find I like the look of it better. I also have a fair amount of time to get ready, I used to live on campus and now I live about 10mins away, so I don't have to factor in much travel time.

i m quite a dressy person, hoody and tracsuits never appear in my wadrobe.
i wear pretty much everything to school, since i m in school of design, no matter what i wear, there is always someone more dressed up than I do!
i always plan my outfit the night before, my brain simply isn't ready to think of what to wear at 7 in the morning!

i wear whatever i would wear any other time

but never streetwear..like sweatshirts or hoodies(unless needed for something) or trackwear or even tees
i dont plan ahead the night before..nor do i spend half an hour in the morning to plan

i made a formula for myself black tights + white slouchy boots or heels + dress or shirt+skirt + blazer/jacket = my get up
that's how i usually dress...simple, quick and still me

i'm going to be in college nexy year & i've bummed about dressing down. i'm used of wearing heels every day to school & super cute outfits. so this has uplifted me a bit. even if im the only one not in juicy sweats & flip flops at least i'll stand out haha

even though my parents are quite wealthy i cannot afford them as they don't pay for materialistic stuff. they pay my rent and uni stuff but nothing else. so i rarely buy anything designer designer in uni. however, not to brag...nooo...but i was considered best dressed at highschool and now in uni. cool.

i studied engineering in college and i had a 36-hour per week course load (with 8:30am classes everyday) freshmen year so dressing was all about jeans and sneakers... later on, with a more relaxed class schedule that doesn't make me run all around to campus and a car to carry my books, i dropped the jeans and started wearing more stylish and sharp clothes from mini skirts and man style pants, to chinos and flirty dresses but definately flats for shoes...

now that i'm a grad student and teaching assistan, i'm wearing heels and i have to admit choose style over comfort... after all i have my own office and spend at most 5 hours at school per week... right now, i wear anything that i wear to anywhere else to school too... mostly well-cut pants and jeans with girly tops, different cardigans to keep me warm, shorts and girly skirts with heels/flats... i use huge bags to carry my gazillion things (from scientific calculator and floppy discs to boardmarkers and class notes) and i like accessorizing with huge rings and funky earings and colorful beaded necklaces...

as a college student with a tyte budget...I always wanna be comfortable wherever i go to school. I would wear just sneakers, jeans and hoodies. If it's summer time i dress up a lil bit.I get to wear nice tops and sandals. But during winter i would bunch myself with warm clothes just so i dont get sick.And if i have my chem class or class that have lab on it i would wear my cheapest clothes just in case those chemicals will accidentally spill on my clothes.

ipeque ... I'm with you on that work load (MechE myself) ... sometimes I'll look like hell if I've gotten too little sleep . But I still try my hardest to look look decent and not sloppy.

In college, I was a non-conformist. Back then it meant not wearing a pocket protector and instead going to class in shorts and flip-flops.

These days I can be seen in either heels or a skirt, and have visited my alma mater several time, having flown in via privately owned airplane, several times since.

My heels are very masculine designs, usually concealed beneath my long jeans. When I wear a skirt (almost always at home, rarely outside), I almost always wear ankle-length skirts with dark flat boots.

To date, despite hundreds of wearing, I've only had two negative comments, countless positive comments, dozens of pickup lines from the girls, and the following from one frauline:

"That's a wonderful skirt - may I try it on?"

My response: "What? And get me naked in the middle of this bar?"

She wanted to try on my heels, too. I let her do that...

It really all depends on the day. But with over 30 hours a week of work and school, it's hard to look my best. I tried wearing heels to school once, but my feet were dead after walking up and down the hills on my campus all day.
