What to wear when you're a student

I seriously hate my school uniform, the jumper is so bright and the grey slacks are easy to tell when they have been worn too many times....

yasmine-Dang. That's probably the strictest school dress code I've ever heard! There's a Christian school in my area where it's more liberal than your free dress days, as odd as it may sound.

My list for fall:
More funky nylons
A good pair of enclosed heels (all my heels are either too summery or stilettos)
Two or three knee-length skirts
A pair of plaid knickers with buckles at the knee
Skinny tanks in many colours, for layering
The Paul & Joe owl bag and blue kimono dress
A nice umbrella (because I will be using public transport a lot)
A couple nice coats-one preferrably in tweed
Some good Austrian crystal earrings and necklaces
A tiara (there's a specific tiara that I want, and tiaras are part of my style)
A couple short-sleeved polo shirts
A pair of neon Converse shoes, to be worn with funky nylons and a knee-length skirt.

what are nylons?

Besides school supplies and my $600 worth of textbooks (*cringes*), I need a new messenger bag (prob. Coach or Prada) and due to me losing 30 lbs. this summer :D (YAY ME!!) I have to buy ALL new clothes. I mainly am going to focus on some really nice fitting jeans, a lot of business-casual wear like blazers and nice fitting slacks etc, fitted shirts, really flowy and bold-printed dresses and tops, and a few pairs of nice shoes. Of course this is going to be AFTER I buy furniture for my off-campus apartment, LOL.

sounds like you're in for a good term ^^ :D

i need a new messenger bag, brown boots, and some dressy flats.

other than that i think i'm pretty much set. i've picked up a lot over the summer.

I wear a school uniform  Skirt, shirt, tie, blazer, shoes and everything. The only thing I can really 'dress up' is my hair, but then I don't really give a toss about my hair when I go to school.

But if I didn't have to wear uniform, I think I'd just opt for simple items like:
Fitted oxford shirts, polos, t-shirts
Jeans, shorts
Sweaters, cardigans etc.
Flats, casual shoes

Sometimes I think I'm lucky I get to wear a uniform in that I don't have to DECIDE every morning what to wear :P It's bad enough trying to concentrate you don't need dangly bits or buttons or something loose to distract you hey.

i just put in an order for a Paddington today, so i'm going to really try to limit what i buy for the rest of the summer
I just need some basics:
-cardigans/sweaters
-a pair of dark indigo straight legged jeans. not skinny jeans because they bunch up at the ankles.
-a few basic tees and tanks
-a double v neck little black dress. haven't found the perfect one yet
-a pair of quality, low-cut flats

ive been buying tops and making myself STOP buying jeans and jackets....i've picked up quie a few really cute paul and jo stuff, and i found the perfect levi for me! the slouch 504. i've been shooping a lot too over the summer, so i have a bunch of cool shoes and sweet boots i bought out of season and stored and should be able to open up and use in a few weeks or so. it's like going shopping in my room :P

I'm mostly getting basics so far. And, I get to ask my mom before buying anything, so I'm getting them slowly. (But don't think I'm mooching off her or anything! The money's all from my lovely job!)

Stuff I've gotten:
-Black and grey sweaters from J. Crew
-A grey cardigan from Banana Republic
-A tee shirt with a Charles and Ray Eames picture on it. (My mom gave me that and a chair from them to me for my very early birthday present)
-Polos, a henley, a bag, and a scarf from American Apparel
-Shirts from J. Crew and Banana Republic

I still hope to get:

-Baggy trousers from Yves Saint Laurent
-A grey cardigan from Gap
-Shoes from Tod's
-Yellow cardcase from Goyard
-Another shirt from J. Crew
-Louis Vuitton money clip
-A Marc Jacobs tee from the Paris store opening

ugh i hate being back at college
i feel so out of place in everything i would normally wear in new york.
yesterday i wore my capelet and everyone was acting like it was really bizarre...its a really wearable one too; its short with arm slits. im not walking around with a full length gothicy one or anything.
and today im wearing my basic "new york outfit," little black dress, red cage ankle strap pumps, black prada skinny scarf...and everyone is wondering why i am so dressed up.
the dress is from american apparel!

siigh.

honestly, how can one do fashion at college without feeling ridiculous?!

decadentxangel i totally know how you feel. I always feel like i have to tone down my outfits a notch when Im at school. I get people asking me why im so dressed up for all the time when i wear heels. But I dont care anymore. Fashion and getting dressed up makes me happy. I hate the people at m school anyway so who cares what they think..haha. I miss New york city so much when im at school so my "new york outfits" remind me of home...im such a cornball, lol.

Decadentxangel, I agree with B1ahness, the best way to wear the fashion you truely like in school is not to care about those lame classmates.

For this f/w, I am planning trousers, all kinds of knits, gloves, colorful opaque tights, and <3 LAYERING <3

haha, i think i will just have to wear what i like. otherwise, i really will go crazy.
but i did rework my outfit for the day. switched the red heels to black pointy flats, and switched my lv bag to a more casual marc jacobs.
those will be my concessions. :P

If people at school make fun of you for dressing up when they were sweats, then they shouldn't talk. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones is how I think of it. Cruel, but it helps.

^ thank you. that needed to be said. anyway, i like looking androgynous but not in your face. i was stuck in uniforms my whole life (private catholic schools require them. luckily, i don't have to do that in college even though i still am in such a school). i like preppy clothes most of the time but i like having some small surprises such as a twist in the fit or appearance of a look. the masculine/feminine contrast i always find appealing so i combine clothes from those two ends. i don't like trends i must say though.

I just keep it chic but minimal. Simple is key. Heels are a no-no, for my campus are miles long in each direction.

There is nothing more that irks me when I see a girl wobble in her heels across campus. I think if you want to look your best for school, fine. But in something especially fickle as fashion, the most important thing is to dress appropriately for the occasion. You wouldnt wear sweats to attend to a cocktail event or likewise, sky-high heels to go to your local safeway.

All the girls in my school that dresses up for classes in full-faced makeup who looks like they are about to go clubbing gives off an aura of "look look at me", but in reality, they are quite simply ridiculously out of place in our institutions of higher education.

In addition, if you are really a full time student advancing a professional career, you should dress somewhat in par with your occupation. A poor student not yet working full time would look somewhat pathetic in career gear 24/7, especially at school. So whats the rush? When you are working professionally, you will not be able to go back to dressing young again. I think all college students should take advantage of their youth in clothing they would not be able to wear in 10-20 years. I'm sorry, but an LV to class is simply ridiculous, at least save it for an occasion more suitable.

well i wear heels because to walk across the whole campus takes about 15 minutes (quite a small place). and my lv is just black epi...it looks really just like a basic black bag.
im not walking around in like cocktail dresses or dressing inappropriately sl*tty or anything like that, haha.
its just that when a lot of people around you are walking around in pajamas, its hard not to look dressy in comparison.
someone even said i looked dressy once because i threw on a skinny scarf over my basic tank top, jeans and flats outfit.
for me, its not really always a question of formalism, its just going the extra step to throw in something special to feel somewhat fashionable/stylish.

i think i do take more of an advantage of having the opportunity to look "nice" when i can though because im an art studio major (painting) and when im in the studio/printshop its all paint and ink covered jeans and tees and nothing fun. when i think about it, the thing i wear most at school is probably my pair of jeans that are so encrusted with paint that they stand up on their own, haha.

i saw a girl in a cool bubble skirt with ankle boots today and it made me happy.
im wearing my sophia kokosalaki drapey top today, which also makes me happy.

I was wearing black pleaded skirt with brown lace up ankle boots, and electric blue opaque tights, basic fitted grey t-shirt, a purple foulard, and a small chain bag.

A lot of stares + odd looks, one guy with the gangsta outfit whisphered: stop wearing all those sh*t man! And his girls looked at me with the same words in their eyes.
