What to wear when you're a student

It's so cold right now at NYC, it's hard to feel very fashionable--it could be my lacking selection of winter wear. I haven't invested in better/warmer coats and jackets yet, so I am bumming around as many as layers as possible.

When the weather permits, I like to dress a little less casual on occasion. For the most part though, comfort is important, especially when running around 'campus' for various things.

I'm going to Ohio State University in the fall...all this about super-casual college students is really freaking me out. I'm just not that kind of girl. I don't go out in a sequined ballgown or anything, but on my body, a loose t-shirt or sweatshirt is just not trying, and rather ugly. I look and feel like such a slob.
Do college students really hold it against you if you break out the ballet flats etc? It's just taste...

Are there any OSU people who could clue me in

No worries. You'll just look more well put together. College students won't hold it against you if you wear something nice--maybe a tad jealous. You'd be surprised how many people get lazy throughout a semester or have a lack of interest in their physical appearance.

sidney: I hope so. It must be different where you are, because you go to college in NYC. Fashion capital of the US. Lucky....

Bismarck - Yes, it's very true that New York students dress up for class. You never see people in sweats here, but from what my friends tell me, all other schools pretty much ONLY have students wearing pjs. My OSU friend says that people are more dressed up there than Southern California schools because of the cold-- meaning they wear jeans. Haha.

Sidney - I'm the same way. I've been living in my down jacket because the wind makes it too cold to go out to buy a nice wool coat.... or at least that is what I have been telling myself the last few weeks.

Maybe I'm accustomed to uni students and their styles... it has been three years of uni here after all. It could be associated with the fact that New York has no campus for the students, so life in the city is just more integrated--even down to the fashion.

UC's in California are very campus oriented. Being from San Francisco, most of my friends back home go to UC's, and it's like a big playground after high school. Dorms til graduation, practically. So living in small academic communities probably allow for a more relaxed and lazy attitude. Hence the notion that they all wear PJ's. They probably wear PJ's to class because they live in a dorm 5 minutes away from class and just woke up 10 minutes ago.

Living in Brooklyn, or anywhere else in Manhattan, for that matter, requires some more planning since there is commute and more exposure to non-university elements.

Sidney - I have to agree with everything you just said. :flower:

NYU, yes? I love it here, but it is definitely a contrast to most other colleges. Most of my high school friends are at UCs as well. B)

For the last 12 years...
-Forest green kilt
-Button-up white shirt
-Green/Yellow striped tie
-Green Kneesocks
-Oxfords
:innocent:
University will be a bit of a shock to this system next year...I don't want to be doing the sweats-to-class thing though, so NYU's looking even better :D

I go to a UC and not many people wear pjs to class. Many of the people look fairly put together unless it midterms or finals time. I know I try not to look like a slob.

Black trousers, shirt, tie etc. Aren't uniforms great.
Next year, at uni I expect I'll probably be a jeans and hoody type person for exams. I tend to find myself revising a bit late the night before exams so clothes really aren't the first thing on my mind. I could never do pjs or a tracksuit, I would feel so uncomfortable wearing that.

I'm in the 9th grade. I wear jeans everyday single day, a top/tshirt and a cardigan, tonns of accessories. Sometimes there'll be a lot og layers. I wear vans or converse. Nothing spesial, but it really stand out in my school, wear PJs, sweats and hoodies dominate... I'm like britishkiller it's easier for me to get out of bed when I know I'll be wearing something nice!

I`m a student in Boulder, (CU) and the style here is pretty atrocious. Although much of many of the student come from upper middle class to wealthy families and have the capability to create impressive wardrobes, many of them don`t really seem to. Some cute stuff (ie dresses!) on weekends though. On campus however, a lot of Botkier, Uggs ( it is cold here though), Chanel sunglasses with a big tacky logo, dyed hair, nylon jackets with fur, leggings, ballet flats, denim, Longchamp bags...that sort of thing...This is the norm for many unis in suburban locales though, I`m assuming, right?

I have a great sense of style and can put things together really well.
But i cant be bothered because
a) im only 12 so its a little try-hard at my age
b) I cant afford to buy amazing unique high-street off the wall finds

Holy Christ on a stick. You're 12, Kushie? Yeah, you'll be on some next level stuff when you're older. Keep at it.

When I was 12, I was more concerned with my Super Nintendo.

heh, its really strange for my age but I think its more because of entering a girls school and how theres a pressure to dress well. My interest in f\ashion fgrew there.

while i love getting dressed up to go out and to see friends, i absolutely do not care about what i wear to class. i'm in my 3rd year of university and i just don't have time to dress up for class. i wear jeans, sneakers/boots, with a comfy tshirt, and a big jacket typically. or if its hotter a flannel or tshirt alone.

I must be dyslexic! I read "i wear jeans, sneakers/boots, with a comfy tshirt, and a big blanket typically."

Time to go to bed now, I guess...

that too

To avoid wasting time, I usually wear a set of clothes I chose the night before.
Some girls in my college use stilettos and a lot of make-up to go to class. They look ridiculous.
