What to wear when you're a student

What do you wear to class/school??

I've been trying to find a thread about this but never came across one, maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. I was just wondering what people are wearing to class, especially now that winter has just started here (Australia). I'm the kind of person that gets extremely cold, so cold that I don't care what hideous thing I wear as long as I can still feel my hands and feet. Also what kind of bag do people use, as I have to carry many things to class and can never find a nice large bag to carry them in, this bag is at least 7kgs, full of paints, tins and other junk...

my style is very girly :flower: I'm thinking "classic with a feminine twist" (but sometimes more rock'n'roll :innocent:); you know, lots of skirts, dresses, flowers, kitten heels. that's why I never wear a backpack :ninja: I think it's hideous, and totally doesn't fit to my style. to me, pairing a skirt with a backpack is terrible, so I don't even own any!

instead of a backpack I carry with me a big handbag. hopefully, I don't have to carry lots of books; just a few notebooks and sometimes 2 or 3 books. I leave the heaviest books in school.

summing up, I wear to school things that I would wear normally, but in a softer way: lower heels, longer skirts, more natural make up etc :flower:

I have the backpack issue to!! I tried it for a day and never will I do it again! It ruins the entire look... plus I had a shoulder bag as well as the back pack (did not look good). As a victim of fashion I decided to put all folders and that in a large tote bag that would alternate between my hands and my shoulders, eventually I'd get a large red bruise mark on my shoulder. But at the moment I'm just wearing a lot of oversized tops with skinny jeans and a cardigan (sometimes 3 cardigans if it gets cold).

Invest in a thicker cardigan

I wore a large flower hairpiece to my exams with butterfly clips throughout  It beat me wearing sweat pants and uggs  Next year I'm going to dress appropriatly!

I noticed that a lot of students in the UK wear cute dresses and ballet flats or even heels to uni... and yet i have never seen a german student in heels OR a dress (unless the jeans are worn with it!). Most choose sporty type of clothes, jeans+tshirt+sneakers.

Needless to say, we (exchange students) are very fashionable there :D

oh and yes the backpacks are very popular here too, but i got sick of them in school so i use my big handbag...

To a large extent I agree with you - I did an Erasmus year in Germany a few years ago and it was really interesting to note the differences in clothing choices between students - specifically the English - American - Germans.

I find that a lot of the English girls at the universities that I have attended tend to dress up, and wear a lot more make-up than the others. The American girls were always more casual, more jeans/sweats/jumpers/flipflops/shorts etc depending on the season...the German students were such a mix. True that they normally looked a lot more casual than the rest of us, but then again I studied law, so it was not unusual for girls and guys to wear suits/very formal clothing to class.

Overall I have always found students from Continental Europe to be more fashionable, and more aware of what they are wearing, and also making more of an effort than other students.

I would say though that come exam time, no one really cares what you wear so long as you are comfortable!

I think this is true, but I think generally speaking, Germans have a slightly sportier style than the British so this is reflected in student's style. Irish people I think, can dress quite similarly to British students, especially arts ones, just maybe a lil less make up?
I attend quite a large university with alot of exchange students and its always funny to see the differences of style. Or even between the different faculties! tan+tracksuit=science, skinny jeans + dresses=arts :brows:

im going to college in september and for the first time get to not wear a uniform, but my own clothes instead.

and so this summer im going shopping to get clothes, trouble is im clueless i dont know what i should buy atall!
im not realy sure what to call my style but i wear ditsy prints, black skinnys, checked shirts, oversized tshirts etc. can someone help me to kind of compile a list of things that i need to buy, possibly list where to get them from (uk only please). also im an art student so im looking at the cheaper end of the market in case of paint getting on me.
id be grateful for any suggestions!

You should definately buy tops from H&M, Topshop and whatever is cheap but wearable...esp if you're going to splatter yourself in paint :D You need to figure out what coats and jackets you'll be getting. Your feet will appreciate flat shoes. All of my everyday shoes are from H&M because they're the only ones that are small enough for me. A pair of black patent ballerinas, a pair of colourful ballerinas and a pair of white plimsoles is all I need these days.

do you think i should just go for mainly plain tops because they can be worn with anything?
i usually wear flat shoes, i think i have them sorted; a pair of leopard print pumps, white plimsols, black pumps and my gladiators.

Since you may be getting paint and dirt on your clothing, if you're not wearing some form of mac, then I suggest Primark & H&M for cheap colourful t-shirts/tanks/cute tops.
Jeans that you are comfy in, as well as flat shoes if you prefer them - the important thing is that you are comfortable in the clothes, doing whatever it is you will be doing.
You can pick up cheap flats on the high street in most stores - Office/Cube/Schuh for some better quality ones that are also comfortable.

I like to wear jeans+t-shirts+flat shoes or converse, comfy dresses, skirt with panthose.
Sure, u can wear this with classy, if u choose the right accessories to make your look more interesting.

im a fashion student, so for me, no slouchy clothes *or the teachers will kill u, really* no short pants and tees and flip flops *i live in a tropical area, so yeah, it's hot as hell* =/ i usually wear different kind of trousers, sometimes jeans, simple drapey top and such, just basic things with a little twist, black flats, or sneakers, and sometimes, heels. i mostly wear black, white, and few in betweens =)

i dont know how it is in other place, but here, u basically have to look presentable everyday. no matter how many hours of sleep u get the night before *or maybe none* so i tried to make my wardrobe more.. "fashion" it's still comfortable and wearable things just that it looks more interesting, *have drapes, weird cuts, etc2* and none of them are designers stuffs or anything. all my moneys goes to the schl and projects. haha.

Last semester I started at 9 mwf, 11:30 t-th but next semester I have class at 8 4 days a week  so I'm seeing lots of pjs and messy hair. At least the teacher is supposed to be easy!

Has anyone else noticed girls tend to look put together the first few weeks, then go downhill as the semester goes on and look awful the last finals week? I'm like that... I don't like the people at my college so no boys to impress :P

^ I remember this girl in one of my 8:00 classes ... she never wore makeup & barely brushed her hair. I saw her elsewhere with her 'face on' & barely recognized her

^ Good story, fashionista-ta. A lot of college girls don't care. Not all, but many of them. It's pajama bottoms and flip flops and school shirts and sweatshirts... I won't say I haven't succumbed to it on a down day, but since no one cares, I try not to care either. :D

I always make an effort, 95% of the days i'm in heels :P

I go to a small liberal arts college in upstate New York. I don't want to write the name because I'm paranoid from Google :P. Anyway it's about 75% hipsters and 20% more will be hipsters by senior year.

Everyone puts quite a lot of effort into the way they dress every day. I was actually shocked when I saw how so many people in other schools get away with just wearing sweats. I feel pressure to think at least a little about what I wear there everyday...

There are lots of New Yorkers so there's definitely some NYC dressing up style, but it's more homogenized because my school is such a bubble. Trends are absurdly common. Last year it was all about:

-granny boots
-leather jackets
-Clubmaster glasses- or any other thick-framed or quirky glasses (guys + girls)
-red beanies (guys) - this drove me insane. Why red? They were trying to copy Life Aquatic or something
-shirts tucked into high-waisted skirts
-plaid button-up shirts (especially with guys, it's basically that and skinny jeans with little variation)
-everything and anything AA (those loose v-neck t-shirts, the color hoodies with white strings and zipper... the spandex figure skater dress was really popular for parties)
- when spring came, aaaall the girls wore floaty summer dresses
-cardigans. So many cardigans
-dark tights
-lots and lots of vintage... stuff

So basically stereotypical Brooklyn hipster wardrobe 101 :innocent:

The interesting thing, though- almost no makeup. Natural look all the way, always. Virtually no one wears heavy makeup, even when going out (and then only painted eyes or only bright lips, etc.). During the week, maybe a few have light eyeliner or mascara, that's about it.

Of course there are exceptions and I may have exaggerated just a bit with the hipster tally, but that really is the overwhelming look and many take it up over time because they don't want to be different.
